He played some great games for Ireland in his day, maybe 10 years ago when he was at his best. He was often the best Irish player on the pitch. If we had 10 other players in the team at the time who were as good as him, we would have qualified for every tournament.

If we had ten other players like him now we'd be a better. Staying injury free is just a big issue for him unfortunately.

You said: "Hopefully he can prove us all wrong again this time and get to 2028 in good order."

In 2028 (the Euros?), he'll be 39 going on 40. There won't be many players that age at the tournament and very few with injury record he has.

yeah that’s true…struggling to see where you’re trying to go with this?

It seems a long shot but the manager wants him to stay on. He’ll probably be able to find a club. He’s 37, let’s see how 26/27 goes if he finds a club.

    So…are we good?

Does anyone know how to find the Grenada match on the Player?

    Edit: nevermind, it suddenly appeared

You were suggesting he's being written off because people think this could be the end for him: he's 37 with a rough fitness record in recent years; posters are just being realistic.

Is this an official game with caps?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,517 ✭✭✭Did you smash it

    oh right…

    this is what I said

Hes being written off for 5 or more years by plenty of Irish fans. Hopefully he can prove us all wrong again this time and get to 2028 in good order. “

I’m saying hes being written off for 5 or more years by some fans and hopefully he can go on proving us wrong one more time.

I made no comment saying people doubting him this time are being unfair or ungrateful. I just said they are doubting them. Which they are.

don’t know what else I can say

Yep, officially a full international, a few of these irish boys might never get another

Nice, first goal for Tom Cannon with his second touch within seconds of coming on. There's such a good player in there if he can stay playing and developing at club level.

Hope Idah gets to stay on for another 10 or 15 minutes to try to get his goal… I'd say he'd be gutted to leave without one after the chances he's had.

Another for Cannon. Very good play, really nice little backheel from Idah to set him up, and a very nice pass from Moran too. The sort of move we'd expect to be pulling off against a team of this level.

Tom Cannon scores again. Good interplay with Idah

I have always liked Cannon, I know some on here said he is average and not up to much but the thing I like about him is he will stick most chances in the net if given a chance. He is a good finisher.

Calm take-down and finish from Moylan for the 3rd. Again, obviously the quality of defence is a big factor, but very composed in front of goal none the less. Always nice to see debut goals.

Has an extra bit of skill and creativity in his runs with and without the ball too… will pull off a jink or clever little touch in a dangerous area that others won't think of. And works hard too.

    Decent debut for Jack Moylan.

I know opposition were weak but good run out. Moylan was good but Moran looked a class above

Was Cannon, Idah, Moylan, and Moran all on the pitch at the same time?

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 7,657 Mod ✭✭✭✭cdeb

Yes, for the first 20 of the second half.

Solid result against a really poor side. 0-0 at half-time was frustrating but we were still well on top - just needed the first goal and things would start to flow. Idah was completely upstaged by Cannon and Moylan - a really bad miss in the first half, and a lazy effort from a wide set piece that he was offside for anyway, but Cannon scored within 90 seconds and he and Moylan knocked them in for fun after that. Ferry a far better option than Adaramola too based on that. Though reluctant to read too much into it - certainly League One players don't become an option just because they played well against Grenada. They're ranked one place above Andorra, but I suspect they may be a good bit worse but the rankings don't cross federations too well at the lower levels.

Grenada were brutal however great to see the lads perform well and an enjoyable watch all the same.

Far too often in the past performance levels would drop against the minnows making it a hard slog and a tough watch, not this time.

Only saw Half of the first half, that shadow was a disaster 🤣 saw whole of second half as the whole pitch was in same light 😳

Decent workout for a largely fringe team, and good opportunity for management to assess them.

Squad announced for Qatar and Canada. I would have thought more players from the Grenada training camp would be involved.

Very surprised Alex Gilbert is included. As a Boro fan I can tell you he's absolutely muck. Excited to see a lot of the other new lads included.

Interesting fact from the game on Saturday, two lads who were in the Bury youth squad when the club went bust made their debut against Grenada, Will Ferry and Millenic Alli. While their careers went in very different directions initially it is testament to both of them that they are now international players.

Owen Elding was also called up to train with the squad.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,829 ✭✭✭kowloonkev

Was it agreed beforehand that the players involved against Granada would not be considered for this?

Probably wants the opportunity to look at as many players as possible. The only actual friendly he's had is North Macedonia and that was a few days after the playoff so no chance to look at players.
