Who told you that you didn't have to do meter readings?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,145 ✭✭✭bren2001

I am not sure what advice you are looking for exactly but breaking your contract with SSE is going to cost you €100 (€50 per utility).

I would think the best thing to do is wait until your contract is up and then switch to somebody else. You can lodge money into your SSE account which will reduce your next bill. SSE are a bit odd in that they do request meter readings for smart meters, I don't really understand why.

Seemly I have to still do Gas.

You have a smart electricity meter. The equivalent are not used for gas, it has to be manually read.

The person on the phone when trying to book the installation of the smart meters told me. That I dont have to do readings going forward. I dont mind doing readings as it only takes 2 minutes. I am out of contract! I was going to leave them in March because of the bad advise I got from them (telling me to cancel my budget plan and pay as I go) But then it was meant to be sorted and here we are again still not! Everytime I ring Im getting different advice.

Like rang Monday. Chap told me reason why my bill was so dear was because its bi monthly. I told him it shouldnt be as I should be back on budget plan which is monthly. He said yeah I can see its set up but hasnt been activated. To do a meter reading on the Gas as the bill was estimated(no need for electric as they can see that). Ring back next day and he'll activated the budget plan grand. Do that, ring back 2 days later as forgot and I am told no have to get bill under €500 to activate budget plan. Explained its coming out the 20th by DD. That my bill should of came out last month and I if it did I wouldnt have owed so much this month and its their misake.

You get me? Its just around and round in circles and the chap on Monday even left notes on my account ffs…

It is correct advice. SSE are just odd, I have no idea why I am asked for a reading from them. They have access to the data.

I do get you and it sounds very annoying. However, your contract is up in October. To move it will cost you €100 and you will have to settle your debts with SSE. Between now and October, the heating is unlikely to be on much. Hence, being on a budget plan (or level pay) isn't going to advantage you hugely before the winter.

The best thing to do is wait until your contract expires. Now is not a good time to be moving, rates have only gone up since the USA kicked off in Iran.

I rang them again cause it's annoying so much still no where! I was out of contact last Oct 25. Agreed to new one 10th of April gone providing i go on budget plan. Which should of started last month. But they didnt and why I owe 2 months now and won't put me on budget plan until I clear what I owe to get it under €500, eventhoughthat will come out by DD on the 20th. So I told them im going to pay what I owe cancel my DD then change provider and if they look for a cancellation fee I'll see them in court as they broke the contract not me.

Refer it to the regulator should be the first port of call anyway, as that's essentially what anyone in the courts system will ask first.

It's these guys. Whether they are any good is a different story, but it's still the first thing you should do.

When I changed to them the switch happened in 1 or 2 days. Very fast from my experience.

we have the most expensive electricity rates in Europe regardless of wether there is a war on or not, we are being fleeced here and are expected to be grateful with 18% discount 🤷

    The internet isn’t for everyone

You might want to contact them. They've offered me a renewal at last years rate.

    Variable 24 rate.

What's the downside in particular to variable not that I've a choice. I was thinking of switching to Day night smart plan but the saving was marginal. This legacy rate would likely be cheaper.

As I haven't done so in years, I'm looking at switching both electricity and gas, I assume moving both to one provider makes most sense? I want a 24 hour rate.

According to switcher there's nothing really that will make MAJOR savings, the best by far is Yuno 1 Year Dual Fuel Plan Variable which would save me €173.67.

Looking back at previous few pages here there is talk of them being a nightmare? What could go wrong?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,145 ✭✭✭bren2001

Yuno are another form of prepay electricity. They predict what your usage will be this next month and charge you at the start of the month. The next bill covers that and if you use less, the next bill will subtract the overpayment. The issue arises that some people have got crazy estimates and are forced to pay it knowing they won't use that many units. The following month, the estimate isn't reduced.

I'd avoid them but there is someone on here who hasn't had an issue.

Exactly, prepay with access to your bank account, what could possibly go wrong 😕

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,306 ✭✭✭✭zell12

I'm with Yuno since December, no issues

    1. At start they took one month's kWh usage for average household - my usage is less
    2. Did not realise that TOU means night rate 2300-0800 year round - my fault
    3. I'm glad I got in, as they had €260 cb at time, and means 2026 bill < 2025

No, it is a credit on my bill. I signed up for one year, and being in credit is not an issue

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,306 ✭✭✭✭zell12

Turns out I'm not the only one - Yuno employee in advertorial says same

“I have a day/night meter and I wanted my immersion to come on at 7am, the last hour of the night-time rate, when it’s cheaper. But because I hadn’t updated the timer clock, it was coming on at 8am. I personally saved a lot just by that one simple change.” Yuno advert

I am currently out of contract. Looking at options. Was with Energia who served me well on the 2-6 EV rate as we have two EV's. Have solar panels as well.

We have just given the go ahead to install a battery which we intend to charge during the EV period and consume during the day..

Who is the cheapest for electric only?
