Ok, went out for a walk at lunch and it's significantly colder today!

Sunny in Waterford but very blustery. This wind is becoming a pain more than the cooler temps.

Some flashes of lightning 🌩 on the radar around carlow and eastern wicklow a while ago

Northerly winds will almost always feel chilly no matter the time of year. This same setup would have been significantly cooler years ago when the seas modified the cool airmass less. The fact it’s also a strong northerly wind does not allow the temperature to drop as much at night as it could. A cold night will have a bigger anomaly than a somewhat low daily max.

Mix of virga and fair weather cirrus.

Listening to Met Eireann you would think it's a degree or two colder than last week. Erm it's been 11/12C today in Cork with a really cold and strong Northerly wind, similar to yesterday. The difference from last week is significant! Do Met Eireann ever actually walk outside and feel the weather. Are we not 10C colder than last week and an actual feel factor difference of 15C

Im over 50 and I don't ever remember temperatures much lower than this for Mid May. While your observation that Northerlys in May were colder years ago makes sense, my actual living through 50 years doesn't agree. 11C on the South Coast in mid May is as cold as I ever remember

A very showery day today in Meath but the showers have died off now. Earlier had several very blustery rain showers with some hail mixed in, showers moved through very quickly and never got heavy at any stage but felt very autumnal. The good news is that it seems likely by next weekend and into the following week we could be looking at summer temperatures (18 to 22C) which would be very welcome after the unseasonal cold of recent days.

I remember early June 91 being very chilly for the time of yr only getting up to around 12c somedays in Dublin.

Thank god it's not just me that thinks this is not normal for May.

Hailstones and all thrown into the mix on drive home this evening.

There have been a fair number of such days in June in my lifetime and I'm younger than many of you who have experienced a lot more. 2022 had a day under 12C in Dublin, 2019 had THREE.

11th June 1977 had a max of just 8.2C at Carlow. A full 24 hours without going above 8.2C.. in June.

No denying it is a cool day for mid-May. Historically there have been more significant cooler days. 14th May 1993 above is probably the most extreme example. Dungarvan had a max of just 8.9C that day.

Just back from a run. We dodged the showers earlier. Very lucky. The wind is something else.

Some lovely wispy clouds about at the moment. Leitrim

Its gotten very cold here tonight. Today, though chilly, has felt warmer than any day this week so far to me anyway. The wind wasn't as incessant or strong. It cleared up around 10:30 this morning and apart from one shower in the early afternoon thats all we had. There was hail in that shower too. Last hour or so has gotten bitter cold but clear and bright.

Just about to go out and it's 6c with a "feels like" of 1c and that North Easterly coming in - wrap up!

Nice morning in north Longford. Light cloud with the sun shining through. 8c with a slight northerly breeze. Overall pleasant enough.

on the chillier side today when the sun goes in but I’m excited for the heat wave next week!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,323 ✭✭✭KanyeSouthEast

heat wave? 5 consecutive days of 25 degree plus temps incoming?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,001 ✭✭✭✭Supercell

My poor tomatoes are looking forlorn, usually by now they are springing up but this year no growth in the last couple of weeks at all. A warm spell is well overdue.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,212 ✭✭✭Neddyusa

The stats might say 2021 was colder, but was that largely down to high pressure and frosty nights. The "real feel" due to the incessant northerly wind makes this May feel much much colder.

Nice morning maybe if it was November?

It's baltic out there for mid May

    Bring on the heatwave😁

It wasn’t though. May 2021 was one of the wettest on record (it had one or two notably cold nights early on around the 6th). You’re thinking of April that year.

I would think perception is also skewed as more people are commuting this time around whereas then many were still working from home.

I could compare the wind speeds between the two if that’s of any interest, when I get time.

I have to say I have thoroughly enjoyed the last few weeks of dry weather and I don't want it to end. Yes it has been cold and sometimes breezy but the cold never bothered me too much. I have been able to golf every weekend and many long evenings (I really hate wet golf) and the garden is in great shape as we approach summer growth. The parkruns have also been dry for many weeks which is always welcome. I fear milder temps will also bring rain.

Lol, I see your point. We have had a few flurry of drizzle since morning too now. Its cold for may admittedly, but better than earlier days.
