From a corporate perspective, Slot really does have a lot to offer. Fairly boring, predictable, ability to waffle, offers a distraction from the bosses, takes the heat. I'm sure he is able to take direction fairly well, and is likely a yes-man as you say. Doesn't kick up much of a fuss I imagine. Perhaps he's not even asking about a contract etc. Klopp from time to time would call out the bosses in public remember, so behind the scenes he was probably much more vocal.

Really these qualities are important when running a business, vs where fans just think of the sport and the quality of the performance on the pitch. Wenger kind of turned into that for the last half of his time at Arsenal, and they were happy enough to let it continue once they were achieving CL. Slot of course doesn't have the heritage of Wenger with Liverpool, but I can see why they can put up with him for at least one more season. Not that I like it.

Salah going to Galatasaray or Fenerbache makes sense to me, but not Virgil. I'd have thought most of the top clubs would want Virgil. Barcelona for example would be perfect for him

The fans are the ones who make business for football clubs, they drive the whole industry.

BBC had a summary article on it. Sounds like Rafa doesn't come out of it too well, which is a shame

Van Dijk leaving would be the worst thing that could happen to us, whether you think he's regressed or not he's still at the very least the best CB at the club. He's been played a ridiculous amount this season (4,761 minutes, equivalent to just under 53 full 90s) and that can't continue, but if we can get him some more rest instead of playing him for every minute of every game then he's still got years at the top level imo.

There were plenty of opportunities to get him off the pitch this season that we didn't utilise, like playing him for the full 90 in games against Barnsley, Frankfurt, and Qarabag.

These are the things that were also said about Houllier, right before he was replaced by Rafa. I think there's merit to the idea in general alright — but the club's actual actions are what make me think their aims are a bit higher… they've been fairly consistent since joining in really wanting to push the club to win things, so I just don't see that they suddenly want to settle into a safe 'also ran'. And they bought the 3 most expensive players in Europe last season. That seems a clear enough sign of wanting to push on.

So if they keep Slot, I think it's because they genuinely think he can pull things back and win another league. And if at some point that faith in him being able to achieve another league fades, he'll be gone.

Yes. We're all just stabbing in the dark but what else can we do until the summer? As above, FSG might show mercy to Slot based on his winning the title, having to deal with massive squad change and a player's demise.

On the flip-side, they may view it as "we've got chance to get a better coach in Alonso so let's do it". I'm hoping the latter. The one thing that gives me hope is that they were quick enough to bin Rodgers when Klopp was available. You'd also hope, as you imply, that they would see that it's in their interests as well as the fans' to have a team that brings excitement. After being in charge for 15 years, you'd hope they'd have enough contacts in football to tell them that what Liverpool have done this season has been so far away from Klopp's days that it beggars belief.

I don't disagree, but before winning the league, they probably thought they were in a 3 year transition, and the league win kind of indicated maybe we were ready to go again, hence the Salah and VVD contracts also. But the flop of a season and the additional players brought them back to earth, and they are now revisiting the transition idea. Having a steady agreeable hand to get through the next year as they continue the re-build might be appealing.

It does seem a waste, but I don't know if they see it that way as these things tend to take time either way.

Remember with a new manager, especially a decent one they will probably have to put perhaps £25 mil on the line for a 3-4 contract minimum. If Slot can get CL next year and rebuild the team his cost is basically zero (as he is out of contract anyway). It's a shot to nothing effectively. Chances of winning the league is still low with someone new, and CL is pretty much pot luck anyway.

Still think they have an eye on Nagelsmann.

After the World Cup Nagelsmann will finish up with the National Team and have a break. FSG give Slot another chance but if it goes poorly, they have their guy.

I would have thought they would go for Alonso as the would fans would give him time and FSG love that.

Also with no Salah, Robertson, Konaté or Alisson who captains the team? Joe Gomez, Endo, Tsimikas and Chiesa all could leave also

From a seniority standpoint that leaves Alexis MacAllister (1998), Cody Gakpo and Alexander Isak (1999) as the only players left in the squad born in the 90's

Slot was also asked if he was part of the plans for the summer, and he responded: “We know where we go on tour.

“So plans have been made, and talks have been ongoing between the club and new players, and I’m involved in that, if that’s what you want to know.”

I really think he'll be here next season.

I really fear for another season of not being competitive but also watching terrible football that clashes with the club's identity over the last decade.

Fingers crossed he can shake off the Klopp's team argument and show an ability to build something effective himself.

Not really about age as such. Szobo I think is a clear captain material, and Gravenberch potentially, Konate of course is more likely to stay if he's in negotiaion. Otherwise I would say at least one of the veterans will end up sticking around, hopefully VVD and would take the main captain role.

I agree. Would be crazy to get rid of a player who's still playing to a very high level and a respected leader. He may have dropped a bit from his previous form but he's still a very good player. If anything we've really lacked leadership on the pitch and could do with more. Szobo would be a good vice-captain. Maybe the responsibility would be good for him. If we lose Alisson too, that's another senior player. This could be a huge mess if we don't get signings right this summer. The jury's out on most of last summer's signings and we're in the last 10 days of the season: Isak, Kerkez, Wirtz, Frimpong.

I very much hope not. He's a drama queen and has fallen out with people wherever he's gone. If you think the fans are frustrated with the kind of comments Slot comes out with, just wait til you see Nagelsmann.

Really? I didn’t know that about him. I had a quick look around the Bayern subreddit and they seemed to like him. When he was linked with Chelsea and Utd, fans seemed to be on board there too

I think he fell out with the suits at Bayern though.

Szob is the new captain, already captains Hungary

Virgil is easily our player of the season imo.

Letting him go would be crazy.

Yeah, would put very little stock in that report from Turkey. The bit that's also getting left out of the initial report is that they'd want him on a free, which I'd say there is zero chance of Liverpool agreeing to.

If anything I'd say he's more likely to sign another year extension at Anfield.

Agreed, I know Slot is not the answer. But I would take almost anyone over Nagelsmann!

Van Dijk may not be as good as he was but he's still absolutely one of the best centre backs around. To play the number of minutes he's played this season, at the level he has, at his age, is quite remarkable to me. Is he the player he once was? Obviously not. Can you imagine our defence without him? I can't. Still one of the best in the business.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 12,436 ✭✭✭✭J Mysterio

He is still probably the best CB in the world.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 14,223 ✭✭✭✭Electric Nitwit

I dunno, I read on social media that Gabriel and Saliba have both surpassed his peak this season 🤣

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,795 ✭✭✭✭Fitz*

It's funny looking at the list of CBs with that most amount of interceptions, headers won, duels won, most passes etc and seeing that VVD either tops the list or else is very close to the list.

We all know that he hasn't been at his best for the duration of the season. But it also must be caveated by saying that he was probably our best player for the first couple months of the season, when we were winning every game. And even in the bad months, he has still put in some brilliant performances to ensure a win was earned. Some proper leader performances where we had to dig in and see out a lead.

Ah here. We all love big Virg but those day are far behind him. Still one of the top PL CBs but absolutely not the best in the world.
