They flew into Dublin the full week before the Leinster game, so they had plenty of time to get travel out of their system.

I was hugely disappointed with them on Saturday - as exciting as their attack can look in Johannesburg, i thought they looked utterly uninspired last Saturday night. Lost count of the amount of times they aimlessly kicked a box kick from a good attacking position inside Leinster's half.

A lot will depend on what players Munster have available, but if Beirne & Crowley are back (a big if on both fronts - Beirne was on the piss in Dublin last weekend with his leg in a brace - strange he wasn't in Galway), then I'd back Munster to win that game in Thomond.

Wondered this myself whether they were targeting Munster. I don't see how they can go from being battered, by what was 90% a Leinster 2nd team, to beating Munster, who have to win, in Thomond a week later, although I don't follow them at all really so unsure of the strength of the team they put out against Leinster.

It was mentioned on comms IIRC they only arrived on Wednesday.

I think Ulster's best chance of getting a Champions Cup spot next season is beating Glasgow on the weekend. Montpellier are looking very good. Their win on the weekend though was against Montauban who've only won 1 game in the Top 14 this season, their points difference is -714 and they've conceded over 1100 points!!

Yep anything can happen in a final. You'd think Ulster (CEO) will be prioritising Glasgow game from a financial point of view (Champions Cup Qualification - Revenue).

Good interview. McCaughey comes across very well.

(Near the end he talks about '1 area' we are looking to address over the next wk or so regarding 'depth of squad'.) Werner Kok maybe?

(Ulster currently 9th/10th in player budget in the URC) Not sure how this is measured (IRFU money incl?).

IEPCR’s revenues are distributed on the basis of an equal three-way division to Premiership Rugby clubs, URC clubs and LNR clubs.

    https://www.epcrugby.com/european-professional-club-rugby/about-epcr

Do Ulster get more money for winning Challenge cup? Or are all Revenue/Prize money distributed evenly? It looks like the latter.

I dont think its huge money (from EPCR) for playing in champions cup (approx €300,000) but it must be more than the Challenge Cup.

35min mark of Interview they talk attendances.

Ravenhill holds 17,000-18,000. McCaughey said 7,200 came through the gate for the QF v LaR.

The attendance for the Stormers game last week didnt look great. Anyone hear what the attendance was?

Wow, avoiding that set of officials has to be a good omen for Leinster

Tickets are probably about 20-25% overpriced.

However - I think a bit more could be done to promote Ulster Rugby matches. The interviewers said it themselves, do more corporate deals and more importantly get more kids/teenage groups through the door. I only see Ulster rugby matches promoted to existing fans. Give out free tickets to youth groups, soccer & GAA clubs across the 9 counties. Drive more interest. Its a great evening out, especially when the weather is forgiving.

Ulster do need do more but going into soccer/gaa clubs with tickets just is directly taken on those organisations and not way to do it. its through primary schools. secondary schools that dont play etc. same kids but not directly taking on GAA/IFA(FAI)

9,000 or so I think. The atmosphere was great last weekend though.

The team is playing great rugby and are doing reasonably well so it is a bit disappointing that the crowds havent grown a bit more, but I think because of the 3 additional home play off matches non ST holders probably have had to pick and choose a bit with regards to the last two regular season matches. You're talking an average of £35 a ticket which isn't too bad, but if you're bringing the family it adds up a bit, especially if you were at the Exeter game and/or La Rochelle games.

Looks like McCloskey will miss the Bilbao final. Gotta feel for him.

This is the deal that I vagueposted about at the start of the season - I had heard from someone in the know that it was in the works. I had thought it was sponsorship, but apparently not. What are the odds of getting Talisker in the stadium?

Ulster have very clearly prioritised Bilbao based on the selection for the Glasgow game:

    (15-9, 1-8):

Michael Lowry, Werner Kok, James Hume, Wilhelm de Klerk, Zac Ward, Jake Flannery, Conor McKee, Sam Crean, Rob Herring, Tom O'Toole, Harry Sheridan, Charlie Irvine, Joe Hopes, Nick Timoney, Bryn Ward

Reps: Tom Stewart, Angus Bell, Scott Wilson, Cormac Izuchukwu, Lorcan McLoughlin, Nathan Doak, Jack Murphy, Ethan McIlroy

Not sure about that at all. It's not a bad team, but still… enough for a win/2 points?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,476 ✭✭✭Locke_Lamora

I can’t say that I’d pick a much different team given we have a final next week, which is what it’s all about, but this has a very good chance of backfiring spectacularly. Ultimately I think this will all be judged on the outcome and missing Europe again would be disastrous.

If we’d not had those awful losses against the welshies then this wouldn’t be a conversation but here we are.

I’d have liked to see Ulster put out a stronger team. Don’t want them to end up in a Leinster 2023 situation the week before a final where they rested players in the semi final against Munster, lost, and then didn’t get it over the line in Europe.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 361 ✭✭big-al

most of the players who will start next week are either in that matchday 23 or are nursing knocks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,248 ✭✭✭✭mfceiling

Hume and Herring back is huge. Bell and Augustus need to be wrapped in cotton wool for Bilbao!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,456 ✭✭✭FtD v2

The bench is strong, but it's obviously not at all close to a strongest selection, particularly in the tight 5 and at half back.

I'm not necessarily saying I disagree with the choice, but dunno if this team is good enough to get a result against Glasgow.

Sorry FtD - no, I meant I wasn't sure at all that the selection was a good idea. I completely agree with your point that it's clear they're doubling down on Bilbao.

It's not a team like we sent down to Munster, but I worry we'll get nothing from teh game.

Not sure if Ulster have enough in the pack and at halfback. Not the most fearsome pack Glasgcow have picked all the same.

Maybe Ulster just hang in until the cavalry arrive from the bench in the second half.

    1 Nathan McBeth (68)
    2 Johnny Matthews (107)
    3 Zander Fagerson (174)
    4 Gregor Brown (47)
    5 Alex Samuel (55)
    6 Ally Miller (46)
    7 Matt Fagerson (139)
    8 Macenzzie Duncan (14)

    9 George Horne (154)
    10 Dan Lancaster (20)
    11 Kyle Rowe (51)
    12 Sione Tuipulotu (85)
    13 Stafford McDowall (115)
    14 Kyle Steyn (C) (107)
    15 Josh McKay (79)

    Replacements

    16 Gregor Hiddleston (46)
    17 Rory Sutherland (23)
    18 Sam Talakai (41)

Baptism of fire for Willie de Klerk. Is Carson injured? Jude rested, McCloskey and Stewarty Moore out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 361 ✭✭big-al

Carson ruled out for the season after the Munster match.

I see Barron has his red card rescinded.

    still no mention of Henderson.

    Is the 3 week confirmed

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,456 ✭✭✭FtD v2

Seeing it reported in a few places now. It's a shame.

On a day when Ulster might get to lift some silverware after a long wait, you really feel Iain Henderson and Stu McCloskey deserved to be out there.

I'm 50/50 on the selection. But we haven't won a trophy in 20 years so it is understandable. Plus we have a strong bench, if we do manage to keep ourselves in touch with 20 to go then maybe we can lift our level, but I'm not very optimistic.
