The days of George Redmond in Dublin Corporation.

Staff who didn't play along with him ended up in jobs like Sanitary Services and Training, well away from the Planning Unit.

In later years, George would ring up his cronies and ask them to sign out files under their name and bring them to him. Never enough for anyone to prove anything, but everyone knew something was wrong.

Doesn't matter what it is called, the only question is whether it is a vote-winner or vote-loser. For FF it is perfect, to those who like immigration they distance themselves from Ahern, to those who don't like immigration it's a nod and a wink.

Either way, it could move their candidate up a few preferences. Probably won't matter as he won't get enough first preferences to hang around for the later counts.

It's true that if you brand somebody as far-right unnecessarily that's exactly what they are going to become over time. Nobody is arguing that subsidising refugees is unsustainable long term. A lot of the Ukrainians especially have skills that could have been used instead of the state paying for them

I thought we were only accepting Ukrainian women and children? I accept that there a plenty of draft dodging males here as well but if they were truly skilled they would find some way to apply those skills to help their country rather than swan around in Ireland; at least a load of the Muslim ISIS supporters apply themselves in raising funds and pushing their agenda eg Clonskeagh Mosque but the Ukrainians don't seem to do much of that

What you have described is classic dog whistling.

Whatever, I am not getting into that, I am just suggesting it will turn out to be a classic Bertie vote-getting incident.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 81,066 ✭✭✭✭FrancieBrady

Have you an opinion on what he did?

You seem to be defending his vote getting/dog whistle call it what you want.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,611 ✭✭✭JohnDoe2025

I am not criticising or defending it, I am analysing it from the point of view of whether it will help or hinder the candidates in the by-election.

It will be quickly forgotten after the by-elections, so that really is the only point of interest. I am not as caught up as you seem to be in either attacking or defending politicians or political parties.

He was spreading fake news/conspiracy theories for votes - in your analysis.

You have no opinion on that. Okie doke. I didn't need your analysis BTW, I know exactly what he was doing - dogwhistling. thanks anyway.

I apologise if you are offended, but I don't think I am required to respond to any post within the particular confines of how the poster dictates. I didn't say I didn't have an opinion, I am not expressing one on these boards, that is all.

My interest in Bertie's remarks relate to the effect on votes, that is what is interesting.

I caught a bit of The Week in Politics last Sunday. Instead of saying there's too many white people in the Dail you say there's aren't enough black people in the Dail. That's how you do it Bertie.

FF will be hoping to get back in the saddle again and return to their favourite game, corruption and building up the National Debt via a new Celtic Whale.

Aye his time in power and how his governments laid the groundwork for the crash that followed is what people will rightfully feel aggrieved towards him for. However when it comes to immigration his views are alot in line with what more reasonable people think. Noone has a problem with legal immigrants, what they do have a problem is a huge influx of asylum seekers of highly questionable integrity that dont integrate well or come in such numbers that would diplace a local population significantly. It alienates people and at worst allows the regressive right to get a foothold because the officialdom are too quick to jump on the racist card than deal with legitimate grievances. It also undermines those who immigrate legally too after all the work they do to come here.

Think someone described the best approach to immigration is for it to be a melting pot, just enough that they integrate into society well and people get used to them, not dumping a huge amount in a working class area that feels like they're displacing the locals and causing alienation as a result.

Unfortunately the national debt is still massive and we will struggle to service it when borrowing rates increase.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth house?

So this might come as news to you but women are actually part of the workforce these days. Maybe you blocked it out of your psyche for the last few decades?

The ones here are predominantly women and children but we also have farmers. And, no, some very highly qualified people have made the journey but we won't issue them work visas for whatever reason

"After his remarks, which were secretly recorded by the voter, became public, Ahern said he had been wrong to single out Africans, but defended his right to speak about immigration, even if his words had not been “careful or polished”.

So typical of Ahern, he is always mouthing off and then apologies. MM is afraid of him and how he can stir up FF and make life difficult for him.

So he's not even sticking to it? That's pathetic, honestly. Everyone has the right to free speech. There's nothing more vapid than saying that you have that right.

The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt. I am the LORD your God.

The problem is we all know the next house Bertie could call to could have an Irish citizen of African heritage that Bertie would be sucking up. He''s just two faced, he'll say whatever gets him onto the next doorstep.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 61,057 ✭✭✭✭walshb

Sucking up to? As opposed to what, shouting at the African to get out of Ireland, because he has to be "consistent?"

I happen to agree with what Bertie said as regards African (Congo) immigration, but if I bumped into an African I am going to treat him/her as I would treat anyone else, with respect and manners! And I certainly wouldn't be quizzing him/her on their immigration status!

    MM is afraid of him

Hardly. Ahern has just made himself look an even bigger fool than he was already.

Why do you put Congo in brackets ? Would you know the difference , and if you don't why specify ? Is it just because Bertie said it ? Wouod you be fine with Nigerians or Somalis then ?

This is what I find ridiculous .

More honest to say "we should not be taking in people from outside of Europe" , instead of saying " from the Congo " . Like the average person knows any different !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,215 ✭✭✭RoyalCelt

If you look at other EU countries such as France further down this path you absolutely should.

I'm on the verge of a site ban. Please don't rage bait me, I'm easily triggered especially late at night!

because specifically Bertie mentioned the Congo. I am not working in immigration, and nor am I a policy maker or politician. We elect officials for this. We place our trust that said officials are doing the best for the citizens of our country. Bertie mentioned Africa and Congo. I agree with him. It’s not complicated. But you will always get some people deliberately obfuscating

But seeing as you mentioned Nigeria and Somali: absolutely in same bracket as Congo

    In 2023,

Somalia ranked 13th out of 54 African countries for criminality

and had the world's highest score for extortion and protection racketeering, mainly by non-state armed groups like Al-Shabaab and ISS.

    Throughout Nigeria there are

high levels of violent street crime including muggings and armed robbery

. There are frequent reports of carjackings, some involving armed gunmen, on Nigeria's urban roads with rural road networks especially dangerous.

Ahern is a clever fool and speaks with forked tongue, read back on Mahon he is the original jackeen greased pig.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 81,066 ✭✭✭✭FrancieBrady

He was trying to attract the vote of a certain demographic (dogwhistling) to the candidate. He might believe he was being clever, he wasn't really. He doesn't have to be overly greased to get a pass on it either. I heard an exchange with a journalist/political pundit on the radio that went something like this:

Journalist/political pundit: There isn't a racist bone in Bertie's body.

Inteviewer; What about what he said about the Congo?

Journalist; Well, I don't know why he was saying that…

    Really? 😁

Racism, and what it "really" means to be a racist has to be the most diluted term in the world now…..

I'd say almost any human who ever lived (at least lived a while) at some time or another said something that could be considered racist….but today and recently, the incessant need and speed to bandy about the "you're a racist" card is much more dangerous than what is actually being said most of the time.

What Bertie said could be construed as racist language, or unwise language, but that doesn't make him a racist!
