What about Arsenal this season as an example? They have been awful to watch at times and rely heavily on physicality and set pieces. Obviously they have some games where they play well but I haven't seen them competely over run teams very often in PL (albeit don't watch their full games very often so stand to be corrected). They have a really good strength in depth and most their players are very physical- maybe this is where the PL is going and Carrick's tactics may get us in a good place with a similar squad.

I'm in the position where I do think they should sign Carrick- possibly a 2 year contract. Options on the table don't blow me away and think the biggest responsibility lies with the board and signing players rather then the manager, all my opinion obviously.

My ideal realistic summer would be-

    Sign Carrick,

Sign 3 midfielders, Back up striker, a left back, Senesi on a free & back up homegrown keeper for free or v cheap in that priority order

    Sell Ugarte, Zhrikzee, Rashford

Case, Sancho, Malacia all gone freeing up massive wages

Keep Mount, Diallo, Shaw, Maguire, Maz all as back up squad players for 1 season, if issues then maybe try and sign cover in Jan from wages saved from above transfers/releases

Hopefully finish top 4 or better with a cup final under the assumption the front players we signed last year will all improve and cover for any Bruno drop off. Next summer then concentrate on RB and CB's and expect some of the youth players to get more game time to see if they'll make it- Amass, Chido, Fletchers, Shea Lacey (too early for JJ Gabriel).

I think we are in a much more positive position. With proper planning and if the footballing brains in the boardroom can do a half decent job we should be stable for the next 2-3 years and then start discussing more about constantly going for trophies.

I also could be completely wrong and we could be next years Spurs…..

    Silly response. Adds absolute nothing.

Someone has different view than you so you just not interested in it. Your arguing every discussion in here and lead it your way but when you dont like it you just call things stupid or silly.

Where is this talk of Enrique coming from? He's in charge of the reigning European champions. He has an excellent opportunity to win another CL this season and oversee a real dynasty at PSG now they are being run like a proper football club. Can't see him coming to United any time soon no matter what we would say to him. If anything he might come in after his next contract is up if we are in a stable situation by then, qualifying for the CL annually and putting in a challenge for the league.

Also don't believe Carrick is just a vibes manager again is pure disrespect from online fans.

He is the one that chose his coaching team and all the coaches he brought in except for Evans I think have been respected or reported as very good up and coming coaches.

Carrick himself was praised by many around the club as a very good training ground coach under ole and continued at Middlesbrough.

I'd like to believe that they have sat down together and looked at the weakness in the squad and set out the system that will bring the best results. Amorim was destroyed for not doing this and Carrick and his team have done this.

    Lol coming from you.

    "you have fun with that"

I'm happy to discuss but stating with certainty that alonso has told us to jog on and Enrique is laughable ain't leading to any discussion.

But again, rich of you to call me out for avoiding a discussion cause someone challenged your view

    This you, @jayo44

Is it comfy on that moral high horse you got there?

He was interesed previously. he has said he wants to manage in England. We are one of 4 teams that is realistic for and we need a manager.

Why not try? Why not try to convince him the United project is interesting? Sure, he might reject us. But why not find out? Why assume its a no? (and again… United have been very clear that they have not approached anyone or discussed the job with anyone).

And I say the same for Alonso. Lets ask the question.

Though with Alonso I think it is 3atb PTSD and a fear of being branded with it.

Mitch I'll happily discuss things with anyone but I won't carryon a discussion when someone twists what i say or just picks on one little part of a long post and ignore everything else to try prove their point.

I believe the difference is that was me standing back from the thread when you were twisting what I was saying where as you just sneered at the posters comment which to be honest is pretty silly and petty but not uncharacteristic.

It's ok to be wrong or to think you might have a wrong opinion soemtimes I hold my hand up when I'm wrong.

Anyway I'm not going to get into a back and fourth with you about it I think it's silly. Carry on as you were.

This would make me even more worried to be honest, if we do hire Carrick we need to put some great coaches around him. Evans in particular inspires no confidence ineos would be looking to build a top coaching team imo.

I do tho k Holland seems important to keep, but imo we really should be looking for better that the U21 coach we had around and Evans who had just quit as loans officer and wasnt up to anything.

There is a Ben Foster and Edwin van der saar one too on his podcast it's really good. Ben Foster comes across as such a cool goy to listen too on his channel.

Great news on my opinion, continuity and keeping with what's working. Be silly not too.

I'd keep holland, and I'd have expected Woodgate.

Evans seems very much jobs for the boys and hiring people based on being mates, like a bunch of Amorim's guys were. I was never comfortable with the assumption the guys Amorim has just happened to be the best around.

One of my things with keeping Carrick we need to put some set piece, goal keeper, fitness, conditioning around him - I think fitness and conditioning has taken a big drop off.

Though no reason we can add such people to this group (Apart from keeper). If Woodgate and Holland are both staying we won't be getting anyone like that Aaron Danks fella that was linked last week.

Carrick might not be the man but he's clearly shown what this team can do when players are played in position, compared to shuffling a formation and being stuck to it with players the club doesnt have.

Im 50-50 on Carrick but you csnt argue the record of

    10wins

    2 draws

2 losses Edit: (thank you Sénor Jayo)

We'd have bitten a hand of to see that after sweet talker Ruben.

Huge work for the club this summer.

Manager needs to be in place and another summer overhaul in absolute key areas. Midfield needs to be sorted, its needed the last decade at least.

How in the name of god would you know what Johnny Evans brings to the table that inspires no confidence?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,263 ✭✭✭keeponhurling

That's a good point about the backroom team, if Carrick was to be appointed permanently.

It's not only Carrick himself that was selected because he was immediately available for the interim role - rather than necessarily being "best in class" after a comprehensive market review.

The fact that Evans was already in the building surely played a big role in him being selected. I'm not sure about Woodgate and the others. But food for thought for Carrick if he gets the gig.

He's never coached before, learning on the job. Wasn't coaching u18, or u21s. he was unemployed in January when we needed a body. Maybe he is great. You could be right. But surprsing that someone who showed little interest in being a coach would be a great coach.

I guess United just lucked out in january that the best bunch of lads to lead United to league challenges all just happened to be available in January. No cause for concern at all.

i think carrick gets the job cos its the safer play from the brains trust.

lets assume the heavy hitters are out of the question (i'd still ask the question to them though cos some of these are attainable - enrique, tuchel, emery, nagellsman, conte, ancelotti, alonso), you are then left with iriola, carrick, unsure who else.

if iriola **** up, radcliffe will ask why not carrick?

if carrick **** up, wilcox can point to his interim stint to defend the selection.

whether carrick be the right appointment or not, i think it'll be made for the wrong reasons.

Evan’s wasn’t even in the building.

He had resigned his role as Head of loans and had left United.

Thought the same but Fletcher had brought Evans in so probably meant Evans was already there when Carrick was asked.

I think a 2 year deal would make sense. If it goes sideways it wont cost much to get rid, if it goes well it can be extended next summer.
