Yeah, surely if Barca don't want him somebody will.

Anyone of any good in the Nice squad. Currently looking at relegation with 1 game to go.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,638 ✭✭✭✭StringerBell

Fans went off him a while ago and he failed to impress in the cl etc so I doubt they will be gunning too hard for him when they need to spend big on a striker. If he's open to other clubs great but ultimately just get him out the door anyway at this point

13/10 G/A is not a bad return for a loan player in what isn't a vintage Barca side. Worth 40m to anyone.

I think Barca would like to keep him, but also know he wants to stay and United really don't want him back. So feel they can get him on another load or at an even lower fee.

United allowed for this to happen when they made it a straight option deal. Though short of making it an obligation on winning the league I am not sure what obligation Barca could have been held to (Goals or appearances they;'d have just stopped picking him)

Yeah agreed. Can see both teams playing games where Barca play down wanting him and trying to get a better deal, while United will pretend he still has a future. I don’t see United being as stupid this season to let it be known he is in a bomb squad

I think the fact that Carrick is giving squad players a runout suggests he knows he's got the job and wants to assess the squad ahead of the summer. Sunday is the last home match of the season, if he's not staying on, I'd expect that to be announced this week so he can say goodbye (whether you think he deserves the full-time job or not, he's done a good job as interim).

Rashford is 29. This is his last hurrah at the top level. If he has any sense he'll take a wage cut to stay at Barca for the next couple of years. He must know himself that he won't be able to rely on his speed and power for much longer.

Sesko was injured, as were (apparently) casemiro and ugarte.
So that is two forced changes.
We then dropped Heaven for Martinez which doesn't scream like giving time to people to assess them.
Mazraoui for Dalot arguable in this case.

yeah, I'm just speculating. You'd think we'll hear something this week anyway.

If they are giving him the job, yeah. Have it announced for the last home game. If they have made the decision.

But man would it be such a let down, imo.

But what can be learned from seeing Mount or Zirkzee play ? It's been clear for a long time that neither of them is up to it.

I'd prefer to see the likes of Fletcher or Lacey get a run, see if they are ready or not.

Or just give Yoro or Heaven more game time, a 90-minute battle against somebody as physical as Brobbey would have been a great learning experience.

People never happy to be fair.

I don't know where Carrick will succeed or not but he had earned the right to the job, he took a team that finished bottom half and got knocked out of both cups in first round and took them to top four, maybe third with couple games to spare.

Was it sexy football? Nope not always but he got results. We have forward players that were signed to play in a different system, we have a back line made of glass, we have a midfield that needs serious upgrading.

No matter who the manager is next year we need a top class midfielder to help us control games and break up play or no matter who the manager is we will be played through and weak.

earned the 'right' to the job, is just such a silly way of running a football club aiming to win titles.

He earned the right, by acheiving the target Wilcox set before he was even hired as interim. so the only way he doesn't earn this right, is by failing to achieve the target that was set.

Such a stupid way of approaching the hiring of an interim manager. If you get us the result we think the squad is capable of, the job is yours. No questions asked.

Re Carrick, has anyone heard of the club's interest in any other candidates? I reckon the he's 'the path of least resistance' choice right now, given the lack of alternatives around.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,097 ✭✭✭✭johnnyryan89

I thought it was harsh dropping Heaven. Yes he's young and can have rash moments but Licha was thrown straight back in after a three game ban and was very lucky VAR didn't review his tussle with Brobbey or he could have been looking at a longer ban.

I love the lad and would hope that he's here for a few more years but he's got question marks around his future at United and it's reported that United are looking at left footed CBs. So why not give game time to the young promising left footer whose been a cracking signing.

Lacey another lad whose surely worth a few minutes off the bench given that Amad has been on the missing list since AFCON.

Mitch twist it whatever way you want to make it silly that's you're choice. He has earned the right to the job by exceeding what anyone thought the team was capable of. At no point when wilcox said he made the change to give us a better chance of champions league football did he think nor did any of us that Carrick could get us into third place with games to spare. He has us top of the form table since he took over.

This is not a third place squad absolutely no way is it and it's stupid for anyone to think otherwise. Liverpool have a better squad than us and Chelsea actually do too the difference is that we have a young manager that's come in and was able get all the players together and pulling in the right direction and grinding out results.

If Carrick came in and we were hanging on to fifth spot and just managed to get there in the end then I'd say they would look elsewhere but he has out performed this squads ability.

Most people likely expected Carrick to do a Rosenior when he was announced as interim.

It's bloody depressing looking at the lines being drawn in the ManagerIn/ManagerOut joust again, after we just comfortably made the Champions league places, likely in third.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,097 ✭✭✭✭johnnyryan89

I don't mind if Carrick gets the job. I think whoever gets the job will be doing well to secure CL football again next season. But there's a part of me that doesn't want to see Carrick get the job because it's going to be Amorim 2.0 with how heated some are going to get about Carrick Out throughout next season.

Maybe Iraola as he's done a good job with Bournemouth. Not sure who else they might even be discussing or talking with behind the scenes. Would assume it's being kept hush hush because some options are still employed or have a WC coming up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,218 ✭✭✭jayo44

Maybe some are afraid they have to be happy? I donno.

I was pissed with how things went at end of the amorim afair I said club got it wrong badly and couldn't get on board with a new manager.

I was wrong and am happy I was wrong. We were heading for maybe 7th place at best and no signs of finishing as third best club in the league. People seem to forget that when they look at where the team is now and think we have a given right to be there. If it was other fans we would laugh and banter them.

Guys you have to remember a lot of the other teams have been poor, no way we would normally get 3rd over Liverpool and Villa, even Chelsea have a better squad.

We are just countering teams it's not sustainable, Carricks done a great job but he's not the man to take us forward.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,218 ✭✭✭jayo44

No matter who gets he job you're gonna get moaning that's boards life.

I think recruitment this summer is pretty much gonna be more important than if Carrick gets the job or not, if we don't sign the right players in the right positions any manager will struggle we have seen that over and over again.

We have tried all sorts of managers at this club and some have flipped and pale have had little success. I seen someone say last week in tv that no matter how experienced a manager is they do not know how hard it is to sit in the dugout at old Trafford as a united manager. Iraiola has done well at Bournemouth but he has never manged or played at a level like United.

I'm not saying Carrick is a guaranteed success but he knows the pressure he has seen it as player and seen it under ole and has felt it to a degree himself now. It just dont make sense to upset everything that's there to take a punt on someine that does not offer a better chance of success in my opinion.

Give him a contract with clauses and sign the right players for the squad.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,097 ✭✭✭✭johnnyryan89

No I fully agree with you. You'll hear so much about the managers position but recruitment imo as you said is gonna be more important. Recruitment of players is gonna be the make or break of United. Unfortunately we need a little too much recruitment to get it done in one season still.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 58,685 ✭✭✭✭Necro

Dunno about Chelsea having a better squad than United. Maybe in terms of depth but even at that it's mostly a messed up conglomerate of somewhat talented players on bloated wages (not to mention obscenely lengthy deals) with absolutely no idea of how to get the best out of them tactically.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,788 ✭✭✭IncognitoMan

Yeah I agree, as we all know it's likely to be a more difficult season next season - teams that were off it this year should improve and the game load is going to be much higher.

I think it's fine to go into next season with Carrick and his team, set the target to be in the top 4 at the end of the season and make it to the CL knockout round. Our next target is making sure we stay in the CL. Then you push for PL title after.

I wouldn't move from Carrick to Iraola. I would only at this stage move from Carrick if the other manager is elite.
Moving to Iraola doesn't remove a lot of the questions I would have over Carrick and at this stage Carrick has at least shown he can get some results. Iraola hasn't managed at a club this size and overachieving with Bournemouth doesn't tell us much regarding his suitability for the Utd job.

I don't know if we are here at this time next season after sacking Carrick or not but I don't think it's a terrible decision right now to keep him in the role given the performance but also more importantly for me the lack of elite options to take over.

Maybe there is a more obvious replacement next summer. Maybe Carrick continues to meet targets.

I'm happy enough to let it ride

won't matter who the manager is if the squad issues are not addressed properly

Arguably, whoever next season's manager turns out to be will have to bed in 4 or 5 first team members, develop another 3 or 4 from the youth team and be tactically flexible and adaptive to the demands of European football. That's without the expectation of strong cup runs and CL qualification. Carrick hasn't demonstrated capacity in any of the above yet. I'm not doubting his ability to learn on the job but I'd feel more confident of our prospects next season with someone with a better track record in charge.
