Problem is we don't have players near that calibre. I see Richie Power was mentioned also, current players wouldn't tie mentioned players laces unfortunately (TJ excluded but he is nearly 39)

Take it whatever way you want

    Enjoyed our chat

Let’s hope things improve for Kilkenny

I'll take it the way it was clearly meant.

Yeh let's hope things improve and that agenda driven negativity from naysayers is kept to a minimum. That'll help everybody I reckon.

as bad as KK were, seeing the highlights on Sunday game, absolute madness to call that a 65’.

Clearcut wide on TV. Umpire in front of it reacted immediately with right decision. Murphy motioned it wide as well straight away.
Awarding a 65 after that was absolutely inexplicable.

Bigger issues than blaming Refs and umpires, we can't rely on them to get us over the line. We looked ragged when teams run at us, management seem to hope this problem sorts itself out as they are doing very little to resolve it. As highlighted previously, we have no pace, no impact off the bench and no structure.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 442 ✭✭Sir Chaz

No we can't, we should have won despite the ref, but when a ridiculous decision like that literally is the difference between winning and drawing, you couldn't expect it to be not called out. Ball was clearly wide and he managed to inexplicably manufacture a 65 out of it.

You're right on the running at us. At times in 2nd half it looked like they had an extra man. We always seem to struggle with that.

I agree Chaz, we were on the twenty yard line at that end and the umpire was in the perfect position and clearly signaled wide three times, he’s the refs man and he played to the Offaly players protests even though he himself was about forty five yards out I wasn’t happy about it I would also like to know the free count today?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 442 ✭✭Sir Chaz

I don't know the free count but I'd be amazed if it wasn't heavily in Offalys favour. I do know we were awarded a total of 4 frees in Offalys half, 2 of which TJ missed. On the other hand Murphy couldn't wait to whistle against the Kilkenny backs, including twice when the ball wasn't in there.

Look we still had enough chances to win by 10 including 3 clear goals and 16 wides, (some awful) so we were certainly architects of our own downfall, but it is very disheartening when soft free after soft free is given against you while similar offences are being completely ignored at the far end.

3 minutes were up after the free as well and he allowed the puckout and a sideline. Incidentally what a silly mistake by Richie Reid for the last sideline. It was the opposite side to us but it looked like a very poor error.

We need to deliver the ball longer far more often. It's been a failing this year in a big way.

Just heard free count was 16-8. No prizes for guessing which team got twice as many frees as the other.

ye Chaz we were near Richie Reid a dreadful mistake which ultimately cost us the match. But in the first twenty minutes we never pushed up on Offaly and gave them free reign to do as they pleased , they did seem to get a lot of home town desisions but we did a lot of stupid fouling Jordan Molloy especially. Charlie Mitchell is another good one he was at Mikey Butler from the start and he also struck Eoin Murphy at the end of the match again it was ignored.

We missed 5 or 6 frees. Give over with the nonsense of blaming the ref.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,128 ✭✭✭Marrooned

I don’t think we’re blaming the ref per se It’s a discussion forum and his name stood out. I think we all know we were the architects of our own downfall.but his favouritism was plain to be seen he pulled us for simple things while he let there misdemeanours go if. Now Krazy if you’re happy with that standard of referring that’s fine but I’m not refs are supposed to be impartial if there not they should be called out we all know it’s not going to impact the result. On the 65 he drove up with another man from Limerick yesterday, a man he trusts to do a job who was in the best position yesterday and changed his position based on what?

fair play in any match is always an issue.

as frustrating as decisions might be and Johnny Murphy is a clear cut w!nker and hated in every county, Kilkenny should never be worried about refereeing decisions in Leinster Championship against Offaly. The few frees we got we missed anyway

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 659 ✭✭✭jamesbond2022

The ref was booed of the pitch by both sets of supporters that will tell you how well he performed wasn’t his fault we didnt perform as we just weren’t good enough on the day

But how he reffed our backs and how he reffed Offalys backs was very different and as someone else said Leinster hurling is being reffed different to Munster hurling

If a player has a bad game there often dropped the same should apply to a referee

I’d imagine Mikey Butler was completely innocent and didn’t wrestle Mitchell to the ground or pull his helmet off? Mitchell didn’t strike Murphy, Murphy broke a hurl off him. Try have some bit of impartiality

Just saw the highlights which didn't feature the 16 wides. Offaly speed looks promising. The 65 at the end didn't make sense as the Offaly player had only ball and Corcoran's hand to swing at.

This team normally peaks mid to late May. Kildare is another banana skin. The Dublin match will tell us if the poor form shown so far is embedded.

I see a lot of comments about tension in the camp. Club rivalries and player dynamics affect teams in every county. Just look at Balkygunnar-Austin Gleason- Davy Fitz in a once promising Waterford.

Shamrocks as 25 champs and Thomastown as 24 champs must be questionning their panel numbers as must Muckalee vs OLG. Are the comments about Deegan part of this?

The challenge for Lyng is that he now has 2 non-Kk coaches and only Rice and Brennan (who know the players and clubs and key influencers) to smooth ruffled player club feathers and get everyone onboard. Previously he had 5. Here's hoping its only been a team storming period up to now and their will to win Leinster at least will lead to a norming for next week. They are experienced at this; but the draw yesterday was a bad slip up and time us running out.

Peter Barry is involved too. He was with the team after the match.

Refs and umpires are there to have unbiased judgement and do have a serious impact on ensuring a fair outcome to games.

Players can do their best, make mistakes but we must always remember they are amateurs at the end of the day give their time and energy for our enjoyment and we show our appreciation for their efforts by showing up and supporting them whether they win lose, or draw, shake hands and wish the winners good luck.

Every match we lose we seem to blame the referee, we would have really struggled if the injured players Screeney, Ravenhill, Shirley and a couple of others were fully available

I feel like I’m saying the same things after all our games and I apologise in advance for that but it’s getting harder and harder to see what exactly our team are trying to do in these games.

Once again they looked like a team with no real game plan, no structure and very little evidence of good coaching. Is it the quality of the coaching itself or is it that this management team simply aren’t getting buy-in from the players ? I don’t know but I said after the Galway game that something doesn’t look right in the camp and yesterday only reinforced that feeling to be honest.

I want to be clear that this isn’t about taking anything away from Offaly because I’m a huge fan of this young Offaly team. They play a lovely brand of the modern game mixed with a more direct style that makes them good to watch. On the balance of play yesterday they probably deserved to win the game.

That said I have to mention Johnny Murphy’s performance because I thought he was very poor for both teams yesterday. He definitely refereed the KK backs far stricter than Offalys backs, the free count of 16 to 8 tells its own story and felt hugely disproportionate over the course of the game. I think the Offaly chap scored twelve or thirteen points from placed balls in a game where KK lacked a lot of things but I wouldn’t have said discipline was one of them.

I really don’t want this to come across as sour grapes because this is not about Offaly or their players at all but consistency was badly lacking from Johnny yesterday. I couldn’t see what happened at the time and maybe it was a 65 but Murphys decision to overturn the umpires call to award it seemed to be based entirely on the protests of the Offaly players and that only added to the frustration.

I’m honestly not sure where we go from here lads, we badly need lads like Adrian Mullen back from injury and a return to form for John Donnelly, Eoin Cody and a few others but we need a massive improvement in intensity, work rate, organisation and a boost in confidence. At the moment though it’s hard to be optimistic about where things are going for this team and management.

Don 't think you will find the evidence on this forum looking back that I have a history of blaming the ref. I assume you were at the match and saw what unfolded ? Facts are, they were awarded twice as many frees as us and I couldn't for the life of me see why that should have been. In Munster, playing as we did yesterday ,I reckon our free count would have been half dozen at most. The 65 summed up a dreadful performance . The relevant umpire and ref waved it wide. TV pictures tend to support that call. How he decided there was grounds to overturn the call defies logic IMO. On your wider point, Walsh, Mullen, Shine etc and the two travelling missing for us, point is they weren't there so irrelevant ,same for opposition. We outscored Offaly 1.18 to 0.11 in open play. I am not going to suggest it was a particularly good/ bad day for us. I always felt it was a 50/ 50 game and only arrogance based on the past had people underrating an up and coming Offaly team that are here to stay. We are back in the pack in Leinster and provincial final appearances no longer a given for the forseeable. However, it is still in our boys hands to make a Leinster final and they need all the POSITIVE support going.

Without Tj on top of the frees we don't have a back up.This was shown up during the league when TJ didn't play and hasn't been addressed. It cost us yesterday
