I'm talking specifically about the racism directed at the Dublin Rose in that thread, which moderators have still done f*ck all about.

Anyone trying to talk about anything else is either too stupid to understand, or they're actually going out of their way to deflect and distract.

Suicidal empathy is a cancer in this country.

You could have people happy enough to call someone 'mixed heritage' and at the same time deny theres such a thing as irish heritage, say its racist to even consider it could be a thing...

(I don't post in that thread and I'm sure there's worse been said, but I'm sure it's dealt with. Maybe not to your satisfaction, but I don't think mods let outright racism slide)

It has not been dealt with. No posts have been removed or amended.

In the mid-80’s, when Ireland was an economic and social basket case. Unemployment was everywhere, Catholic Church still held the moral high ground and politicians were all on the take, I’d had enough. I wanted something better, so I chose to leave this country and try my luck elsewhere.
Luckily for us, all I had to do was buy a ticket and get a boat and a train that took me to London, England. There, you had free magazines on every street corner advertising 1000s of jobs, no qualifications necessary, all you had to do was start at the bottom.
I could have also chosen Australia, Canada or the US. Little bit more paperwork but all accessible. The joys of being European and white.

So when I meet people here, from countries that Europeans had previously raped and pilaged and were now basket cases and I listened to their stories. All they want is a better life. One for example, where they or their children won’t be killed for venturing outdoors on polling day. I say far dues to them. If I could do it, why not them?

I was out postering today for one of the bye elections. Guess which one I put up?

At least that is something then. Why the rose of tralee is being brought up in the immigration thread is anyone's guess, outside of rage baiting against immigrants.

There's a line beyond which the correct answer to "what do you call someone who defends, ignores or protects racists?" is "a racist".

The whole Dublin Rose thing was comical and essentially just rooted out the incredibly thick who forget to try and hide their racism.

Like there'll be Roses whos great great great grandparents were Irish yet its the Irish born girl that isn't suitable to represent Ireland? Real mystery why they have an issue with the Irish born girl.

Simple. To get it shut down because certain sections cannot dare countenance that some of the issues in this country and across Europe have been exacerbated by mass immigration.

The mask slips an awful lot. I remember one lad getting hysterical about an Indian man in Letterkenny being awarded a ceremonial position for his volunteer work. Hard to think of a better example of integration but suddenly that didn't matter.

It's just pure racism. It always comes back to the same thing. Always.

The complaint is specifically mentioning racist comments. why are you are not addressing that?

If there are racist comments ie use of slurs, derogatory or abusive language etc then the guilty party should be sanctioned appropriately and in line with forum rules.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,362 ✭✭✭✭Dohnjoe

What about those who mask their racism by systematically "just asking questions", cherry-picking "facts", concern trolling, contrarianism, etc - even they aren't stupid enough to openly use slurs.

Everyone knows who they are. The mods do too.

I had a read back over the thread and posts since someone brought up the RoT (OP has been removed by the mods as it was a twitter link that seemingly had some nasty comments) and I did not see any abusive or derogatory posts about the Sligo entrant. There were some posts questioning the eligibility of the of the entrant alright but to be fair to the mods, they cannot really second guess peoples intentions, can they?. Ive no idea whether these posts actually had any racist connotations as I am not familiar with the poster that made them but taking them at face value (as mods will probably do) theres nothing there that a quick google couldnt have answered.

Problem lies in a fact that simple questioning of government immigration policy is for some reason being automatically considered racist.

Examples of how Irish emigrated throughout the history and "if they could why others cant" do not apply because of how immigration policy changed in last few years. I doubt that Irish who emigrated were accommodated in hotels, given full social welfare, medical cards, free travel, food and all other various perks for years on end. I know they didn't get any of that.

Hats off to any immigrant who came here, got on their feet and changed their life. That would be two, maybe three out of 10 in say last 10 years. People do have valid concerns that we provide way more than we can afford, indiscriminately to anyone who come, which simply result in more people coming. If this kind of thinking is racist then feel free to call me that even though it will be funny considering I am also immigrant. There was no accommodation, food or anything offered or provided and if I tried to get any of that 24 years ago I would be laughed at and most likely directed to nearest HSE mental health services.

Celtic tiger died quite some time ago. Some people failed to notice that.

I see you have seen the first post now. It did prompt a flurry of nasty posts. The tweet was indeed vile and just a go at immigrants in general.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,362 ✭✭✭✭Dohnjoe

A few years ago in a particular thread, the mods simply nuked all the cranks and agitators - it worked well. Unfortunately nowadays the site is dying and they need all the posters/debate they can get (I understand that)

People have this quaint notion that racists, bigots, etc are open about it - they aren't. On the contrary they excel at staying just within the rules. That said, they are immediately obvious because they are terrible at hiding their fixations.

You are right there's not much can be done considering the decline of the site.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,244 ✭✭✭Sudden Valley

Your first sentence is just not true, the OP in this thread and no one else here is pointing to that being racist.

Yes, it's Europeans fault that some countries still live in the dark ages and practice Female Genital Mutilation

It's europeans fault that they use child labour to extract cobalt in the DRC when the powers that be there could just stop this exploitative practice.

It's Europeans fault that people in africa don't seem to understand how to use contraception in order to stop the spread of aids and reduce excessive population growth.

Look at the catastrophe that South Africa and Zimbabwe have has become since majority rule was introduced

Almost all evidence points to the fact that Africa for example has generally got worse since colonialism ended.

Religion is the influencing factor in most of those cases. Again, like Ireland in the past where the cc ruled supreme and dictated our Constitution with regards to women’s rights, abortion, same sex relationships, contraception etc etc etc

Just over 100 years ago, us Europeans firmly believed that women were not intelligent enough to be allowed vote.

But with education comes reform. It will take time. If we can do it, why not others?

    "

    "

Because they cant. Some religions wont allow any reform and in fact multiple European countries started catering for these beliefs and made exemptions accommodating things which you naively believe can or should be reformed.

Why should Europe pander to backdated ideas, we've done well to get rid of them largely in europe we don't need to start reintroducing them by importing them

I suppose those threads (Immigration / Trump / war ) get the clicks someone is looking for , so who cares about real discussion ie where you have a healthy two sides debating civilly and in good faith . But it does get boring and puts people off reading or joining a thread that appears closed to any alternate view

If only people would do this…

Backdated ideas like Halal slaughter of animals .Backdated ideas like what has happened in the UK where a significant portion of religiously slaughtered meat is being consumed by those who wouldn’t have eaten if they were aware of its origin. UK authorities afraid to ban it because it might impact /offend the Muslims .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,422 ✭✭✭✭ancapailldorcha

All nonsense. If you're not a vegan then your concerns about animal welfare are just pure hypocrisy. I eat meat and it's a truly vile industry where we carve up sentient beings for their flesh. If you're only concerned about animal slaughter when it's halal but not about the gas chambers, factory farming or other abusive practices then your motivation is not animal welfare.

Seems some backdated ideas are fine and some are not.

Why do you put 'native' in inverted commas? Do you not believe there is such a thing as native Irish people?

Its not defined for one, its subjective. how many generations does one have to go back to be considered native, no one knows.

What is it with so many posters coming into the thread and not addressing the Op's complaint?
