the qualifying has become so competitive, it gives the qualifiers a bit of an edge coming into the tournament proper match fit. They've all won at least 2 matches already (back in the day, the players ranked 17-32 would have only played a single match)

Yeah That's pretty common. The qualifiers are warmed up where the seeds are coming in relatively cold. Qualifiers can run out of steam towards the and if they get there too. It's a tricky balance.

The qualifiers have been playing best of 19s in sheffield for the last 2 weeks

The top 12 on the season list played best of 19s 2-3 weeks ago

wilson ding and xiao guodong (+ronnie is ronnie) havent played for a month, maybe the practice will do them good but its a fair size time without a competitive game leading up to the worlds

I was thinking that and you can’t call him He-man! Maybe “He” works. And his second name is awkward to spell.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

I see Ronnie is commuting from Dublin to UK for the championship. And spends 3 months a year here now.

Does that mean we can claim him?

I did think of the TC but even there, only half the top 12 actually won a match.

Be nice to have another winner from Dublin alright.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,540 ✭✭✭eeepaulo

If he spends 3 months a year here we can say hes a quarter irish.

(notice the lower case h refering to he - ronnie in the previous post as opposed to He, although if i'd started the sentence with he how can you tell)

JV would of come out with all the puns about Him? He?

I can see a number of qualifiers winning alright. Very few would be shocks.

Higgins v Carter is the stand out for me.

2 years ago, I think about half of the qualifiers beat the seeds. There will be a few shocks surely again.

Some bits and bobs from Barry for the next few years.

Snooker becomes latest casualty of Saudi retreat from sport

The PIF scale back from sporting investment is going to have an affect, likely reducing the Saudi tournaments from 2 to 1. I think most here will be delighted with that.
Various venues looked at for 2029 Worlds, including Manchester, Ally Pally and Tempodrom.
25% Prize-money increase for next seasons Worlds.

Finally managed to tune in BBC four, ITV4 and the BBC Red button on my satellite thanks to AI . Believe it or not have to turn LG TV network search to off when tuning them in.

All set for the snooker for next year and the WC. If the feckers move the satellites again I will go up in space and move them again

The Saudi Masters is gone 2 years into a 10 year deal.

An example of why you need to look after your core base as well.

The Riley Aristocrat table (table 2) at the Crucible needs to be worked on tonight, as the slate bed must have a gap on it that is causing big bounces for balls played at pace.

Matthew Stevens and Dominic Dale had to adandon their match at 1-1 and will come back to play on table 1 later. After Rob Milkins and Jimmy finish their match.

An embarrasment for Riley and the table fitters.

Alfie Burden as defending champion and only current main tour ranking event winner in the field having to play his opening match on a practice table was nothing short of a disgrace…

World Seniors Championship…apart from a couple of Chinese kids is there much difference between that and the regular World Championships thse days?

Isn't Ronnie taking part this year? And stuart Bingham, Ron Milkins, Mark Williams, Ali Carter, Matthew Stevens,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,070 ✭✭✭✭El_Duderino 09

Oh if you ever watch it, you'll see the difference in quality from the main tour. It's really poor by comparison.

The big players taking part this year will make a big difference, but that's because they'll probably get rid of the Dohertys and Whites early on. So the rest will be higher quality.

Just as well Ronnie didn't turn up and the ball is hopping all over the shop.

Milkins was complaining about table 1 as well and said it was fairly unplayable.

I don't know if they just didn't seal up the slates properly or what

Standard should go up now that the world ranking criteria has been waived.

Given the age of actual world finalists recently, you wonder should the age be raised from 40*. But Bingham lost his first match, so we'll see how the others fair.

*I just think it's a bit mad Shaun Murphy is eligible, after just finishing runner-up in the main WCs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,156 ✭✭✭✭Loafing Oaf

Oh I lazily assumed the cut-off was 50. Even if it was you'd still have a majority of current top players I reckon, well 45 certainly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,072 ✭✭✭DmanDmythDledge

I always assumed it was 50 myself until a few days ago.

    3-1 Ronnie. 3 centuries.

Hopefully he gets serious about next season. Playing as well and as quickly as he ever has.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,119 ✭✭✭Arthur Daley

How was Ronnie not going to run through this like a hot knife through butter. Maybe if Willo played.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,698 ✭✭✭✭The Nal

They really play this exhibition/small tournament style don't they. Real quick down on the shot. Loads of misses.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,390 ✭✭✭✭gormdubhgorm

It's a bit mad I think the organisers are caught on knowing what to do with the criteria there is likely a lot of quality players ready and willing to play in the seniors. But to me it seemed almost unfair this year Ronnie v the weak field.

Maybe there is a bit of, I am just annoyed that Ronnie became the first player to get this set of world titles - World Championship - World seniors - World u21.

And Ken doesn't look like completing the quadruple of World Championship - World seniors - World u21 - World Amateur these days etc

But I think there should be a ranking limit on it anyone outside the top 32 should be excluded I think. It's didn't seem right that Ronnie just played in the world seniors to gain "confidence".

I remember when David Lilley won it a few years ago he was emotional, even the prize was a massive amount of money for him. He was also allowed to play in the champions of champions etc. To me that is what the Seniors World Championship is ideal for giving players a chance that never "made it" in their younger days.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,698 ✭✭✭✭The Nal

Agree yeah. Especially with Ronnie playing well. 5 centuries in 10 frames won in the final. No chance for Joe.

Have to say though, you can really notice the lack of budget. Issues with the tables, dodgy camera shots and live editing - they were showing a replay of the previous shot when Ronnie knocked in a ball for a century - and as much as I loved hearing Cliff Thorburn, he didnt seem to understand the miss rule.

Shaun Murphy could have played less than a week from the World Final defeat! They might need to introduce a rule to exclude any player that qualifies for the Crucible proper or top 32.
