    Why is it hilarious?

She does not have a problem with transgender people in general much the same as the vast majority of people, she has made that clear on many occasions but you don’t seem to want to acknowledge that.

Well, given how long it took for the acknowledgement that Rowling, rather than just being a hateful bigot, is a writer of children's books (and that that's a good thing, so she's capable of good things), it's hardly surprising that anything contradicting the narrative of "she's killing the trans" would not be acknowledged.

As she lives near Edinburgh that would mean her MP is not transgender but just the non binary MSP which was elected last week. Non-Binary which of course is hilarious concept in and of itself as if you state you are non binary you are essentially making a binary decision in itself as you can either be binary or non-binary.

It is hilarious in that it makes people saying she hates trans people look like idiots.

Yes, we should all be neutral in a choice between hating trans people or not.

Would be interesting to hear what people consider to be a neutral stance regarding trans people. I cant see jk rowling or linehan having one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 4,309 ✭✭✭Cyclingtourist

I doubt they're neutral about trans activists.

Trans people, like father of five Jan Morris, have been round since the ascent of Everest and before,.

That's the point. People are having a go at others for being 'partisan' in their opinions of JK Rowling, who herself is very partisan.

    It's the height of hypocrisy.

The trans person not demanding that they be deemed the same as the opposite sex to them? The trans person being understanding regarding single-sex spaces and sports and acknowledging you can't just ignore biology? There are trans people who think this way. Them simply being trans themselves *is not an issue*.

Complaining about hypocrisy while being a hypocrite. Hypocrite-ception?

You have a cheek trying to put labels on me when you've already told a lot of lies about me in this thread.

Perhaps she will post on x applauding this as she is supposedly a supporter of trans people. Not sure linehan will.

That's a false dichotomy deliberately set out to place anyone who is gender critical as hating trans people. JK Rowling has clarified many times that she does not hate trans people, and indeed has a transwoman friend. What she doesn't believe is that trans people can physically change sex, and that respecting trans people does not mean overriding same sex spaces and protections, particularly with regard to women's same sex spaces and protections. Luckily for the women if the UK, she has put money and support into this, including funding a women's refuge which allows natal women only and providing a fund for women who have faced work place sanctions due to standing up for their same sex protected spaces.

I'd say she is intellligent enough to care more about the policies a politician supports and champions than their gender identity.

Already clearly explained how I didn't, but you certainly did about me. Not a word of apology. I'm starting to think you're just on a wind-up. Nobody could really be that lacking in self awareness.

She just doesn't care if trans people are trans - it's the dishonest nonsense that is being deemed credible which is her issue. Why would she have to applaud someone for being trans and a public representative? Bit condescending?

He's gone way up in most people's estimation. He was a legend and he still is.

I'm on the verge of a site ban. Please don't rage bait me, I'm easily triggered especially late at night!

He has turned into a total scumbag and I'm glad to see people who once supported him are now letting him know their disgust at his stance regarding the slaughter in Gaza and the lies he's peddling about his own people being violently anti-Semitic. I appreciate seeing people who won't stay rigidly in support of someone just because they agree with them regarding one thing.

I would be very surprised if he has actually gone way up in most people's estimation.

Yes you did. You said I was in favour of trans people invading women's spaces.

    F*cking liar.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 2,019 ✭✭✭OscarMIlde

That's good to hear that you support men, regardless of gender identity, not being able to access women's same sex spaces.

Like I didn't once say he supported trans people invading women's spaces (although I actually wouldn't mind genuine trans people in women's spaces) - I only said he dismisses these concerns as not genuine and just trans hating, but he seems very comfortable about pretending people said things they didn't, while complaining about people lying, misrepresenting and being hypocrites.

Perhaps. I don't touch that cesspit so I'll just assume otherwise.

Yes, but it had to go pretty far before any action was taken. I can't recall the source but I have read of police refusing to attend events where women were speaking to protect them from trans-activist harrassment.

You are absolutely right on the language. For some reason Enid Blyton comes to mind - she used "gay" and "queer" in a way that we wouldn't nowadays. But, as you pointed out, the change in usage is organic, and happened gradually over time. Recently we have had language invented in academic institutions, and attempts made to force usage of such language on everyone. We've also had attempts to eradicate the use of the word "woman" in medical settings. It's bizarre.

This thread’s making me feel a little queer.

I don't want to quote the mod warning lest I appear to be discussing the moderation. I am mindful of the appeal to maintain standards though, and with that in mind I feel the need to correct some of my own shortcomings.

Firstly, the first post I mentioned regarding diminishing the successes of famous people because they hold unacceptable opinions was by a poster not involved in the current discussion so I didn't and won't name them. They did clarify after a query that they have no time for Rowling.

Secondly, I responded to a post by @ancapailldorcha where he was wondering if it was one of his posts I was referencing. I said no, which was correct in respect of the post referring to Rowling as a writer of children's books, but not correct in the part where I said "she also got the bigot label" which was a reference to a post by ancapailldorcha. The full statement was "Rowling is nothing more than a hateful bigot". In recent days he has clarified that he now accepts that Rowling has written a hugely successful series of books for children and that writing books for children is a good thing, which is the perfect rebuttal of the "nothing more than" part of the statement. Now all we need is a retraction of the hateful bigot part, or specific examples and evidence to back it up, so we can see that the comment is not just born out of prejudice. I can offer no explanation for my posting a factually incorrect statement other than a brain fart for which I apologise unreservedly.

Finally, to get back to the to-and-fro: they say if you're explaining you're losing, but it's a lovely sunny Sunday evening, and I had a lovely weekend after a lovely albeit hectic week, and I'm feeling pretty zen, so what the hell😊.

Some people transcend the fields in which they operate. You can argue, and many do, about whether Muhammad Ali, Einstein, Eddy Merckx, Michael Jordan, Pele, or indeed JK Rowling are the greatest ever in their respective theatres. What you should not do is ignore the influence they had. Each is so well known, and their success so recognised, that their names are synonymous with excellence. You don't have to say Muhammad Ali the three time world champion etc, mention of his name is enough. In the post I referenced, it was clear who the poster was referring to, but no names were mentioned. Of course it's just my opinion, but this is an forum for expressing opinions, and referring to people on the above list as a boxer, patent clerk, basketballer, footballer, writer of children's books respectively would appear as if the deliberate avoidance of writing the name was done to avoid mentioning the achievements. That's why the post, which to paraphrase very heavily was along the lines of "frankly my dear, I don't give a damn about the opinions of a failed comedian and a writer of children's books", stuck in my mind.
