The disgusting racism in the Immigration thread

Honestly, lads. No point even pretending to hide it anymore.

People openly mocking the Dublin Rose, and demanding boycotts, because she is black and of Somali heritage, and it's just a shrug of the shoulders from the so-called moderating team.

Why are we even pretending that thread is anything other than just a dirty, grubby hate-fest?

And yes, I have reported posts.

I suppose the racists have to go somewhere 😉

The person who won't stop talking about the color of her skin is on your side.

I certainly hope the mods look into those posts.

These are the Boards terms of use… and there's no declared exemption in Current Affairs forum from them:

For a country that produced national heroes like Phil Lynott and Paul McGrath, this is nothing short of disgraceful. Well, it's disgraceful anyway, irrespective, but we really should know better.

Interesting, and notable, that they use the same "white Christian" rhetoric as US racists. Is there a connection? Don't know, but interesting and notable for sure.

Thanks for reminding me that gaslighting is also a feature in that thread.

This is called The Get Out Clause .

I saw this thread and went to the Immigration thread to check.

Hadn't looked there in a long time.

Some strange people there like there always was.

    Best avoided.

I would agree with this. I check on it every so often and it's just the same tedious drivel over and over again.

You are guaranteed if you post on that thread at all against the narrative to accumulate so many warnings , you either get a ban or have to only post occasionally because every .single .post. is reported a hundred times by those others posting there who believe you are the enemy !

It's not even a question of breaking the rules …you are classed as trolling / baiting etc . For this read "annoying the natives " so you must be at fault. 🤷

In fairness it happens the other way round on some other notable CA threads as has also been the subject of feedback and not to acknowledge that would be hypocritical .

So where did this ghettoization come from ?

I think the policy may be to corral certain groups of posters on different threads to avoid the inevitable clashes ( and make it easier for the volunteer mods to manage ) that can occur on CA . I noticed this starting in earnest about 18 months ago where there was new mods and decisions about controlling CA after the famous feedback threads that were ignored and Boards took on the attitude of like it or lump it , and introduced the new cumulative point system on the say so of a minority .

I suppose those threads (Immigration / Trump / war ) get the clicks someone is looking for , so who cares about real discussion ie where you have a healthy two sides debating civilly and in good faith . But it does get boring and puts people off reading or joining a thread that appears closed to any alternate view

Whatever the complaints about it , the old school moderation where everyone who said something uncivil or abusive was sanctioned , was the healthiest and led to more engagement on the site because the average poster felt protected once they posted within the rules .

And now I see the one poster who was pushing back against the racists has been threadbanned.

What a f*cking joke this is. Mods just actively allowing racism and not allowing any push back now.

    Yes saw that .

But as to the point I raised in the post above yours , it is more likely due to incessant reporting of that poster because they are annoyed by the posts that are contrary to their world view rather than bias from the mod in question .

    It happens 🤷

Unless of course mods are being instructed to remove so called contrarians to make things easier?

We won't know the reasons because offensive posts could have been deleted . Unless the poster raises a Dispute.?

A lot won't bother because not allowed unless you have a longer ban .

Like some licensed premises just 'cause they're licensed doesn't mean you'd want to frequent them.

Pushing back against the racists? With posts referring to curry sauce and spice bags? Some pushing back alright.

And to be clear, I fully agree that the references to the Dublin rose are a disgrace and bang out of order and have no business being in that thread. Whoever brought it up should be banned.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,244 ✭✭✭Sudden Valley

Unfortunately that is what the thread has long ago descended to. Its just a dumping ground for all immigration opinions in one places, from worries around our asylum seeking process to barely disguised xenophobia that people born here who have black skin are not irish.

I think you have to annoy alot of people to be kicked off that thread, thst is the only criteria.

Racists exist in our midst, in schools, at work, even within families. They are not a small minority. They have a vote and characteristically are very good tax payers. They have to be accommodated. On the other hand, moderators are volunteers, they can't be expected to change the face of society.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,244 ✭✭✭Sudden Valley

Racist views dont have to be accommodated but i think ,that thread is so popular it would be very difficult to mod. With so many dogwhistles you have to wade through a few posts by any poster to see if they are actually xenophobic or racist and who has the time for that? The rose of tralee debate for example couches it in "irish heritage".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 132 ✭✭dp22250

Ordinary decent people are being called racist in society just for speaking home truths and what they are saying wouldn’t be a first cousin of racist material.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 289 ✭✭strathspey

On that note you may find yourself disenfranchised. Racist views are being more than than accommodated. Look across to America and the MAGA movement, look across to the UK and the rise of Reform. Not to mention the rise of the far-right on continental Europe.

Imo the reason that so many of the pro immigration posters get banned is because they can't (or won't) form coherent, well reasoned arguments and in the end, they almost always resort to low level trolling, personal insults and smart arse posts that contribute absolutely nothing.

Yeah I think that would be the only reason a poster would be banned. A poster could have every single post be along the lines of "why is there a black contestant in rose of tralee" type post and not get banned.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,944 ✭✭✭Jack Daw

If you don't like it just don't read the thread, why is this so hard to do for some people?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,244 ✭✭✭Sudden Valley

Ah yeah why complain about racism.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 3,206 ✭✭✭nachouser

It's pretty much the "Ireland for the white Irish" thread at this point with the same tedious posts day in day out. It keeps them busy in one tiny corner of the site, I suppose.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 18,625 ✭✭✭✭Goldengirl

That discussion of 'native" Irish and heritage masking racism was banned before and is still listed as bannable in the OP by a previous mod .

There is no excuse for racist rhetoric being allowed to go unsanctioned anywhere ,no matter the views .

As you say quite rightly posters can express their views about the asylum process and the pros and cons without descending to the gutter of extreme right wing speak.

There are some very good posters posting in favour of immigration controls who despite the fact that their views are not those which I agree with I respect that is their opinion and their right to express it . A decent discussion where you can agree to disagree but stay respectful and amicable is the ideal .

Unfortunately a rare outcome on that thread .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,244 ✭✭✭Sudden Valley

I think they were just being clever. When it was brought up that the contestant was born in sligo they quickly moved to the rose of tralee being about irish heritage , despite the fact it was not clarified if the contestant had irish descendants. But it was brought up only in relation to whether they could compete in the Rose of Tralee not whether they should be considered Irish.

I feel bad for lrish born non white people as they seem to have to jump through hoops to be considered irish by some.

What's the purpose/intention of this thread?

its a feedback thread, the op was giving feedback. I guess its up to the mods whether they agree with the complaint and whether something should be done about it.

To make other members of Boards aware of what the racists are getting away with in that odious thread.
