Credibility is in the eye of the beholder it would seem.

I don't really get the idea that if you disagree with the premise that gript is cutting edge, brave media then you're a moron that another poster put forward above. It's always been a glorified hate blog to me and those who keep desperately pushing it here are guilty of the same nonsense they accuse others of perpetrating. For instance, any criticism of this Ben guy is automatically racist.

Gript are a joke. Lets have a look at their front page today shall we.

Populalist whats trending on Twitter drivel. Big words like "tax", "pepper spray", "Taoiseachs attack"

A headline about pepper spray to incite their thick readers and and a veiled defence of Tuam.

Nothing about Trump and the Pope, Iran, Moya Brennan, PTSB being sold, petrol stations restocking….

Its like they just go onto Twitter and write articles about whats trending. Also, Niamh Ui Bhriain is a lunatic. Genuine lunatic.

Sarah Ryan is a thick as **** nepo baby.

McGuirk has clearly been banished by Niamh Thick Mhathuna because he's not Nazi enough.

Hopefully Grift shrivels dies now without its "intellectual driver" (spews and laughs equally). If ever there was a media entity that deserved to die it's Grift.

I agree. She is a plonker. I just find her radicalisation and decent into far right politics fascinating considering her family background.

She regularly defends the manosphere which I just can't comprehend. She ticks pretty much every idiotic MAGA box.

I don't see grift dying, unfortunately. What I think more likely is them going further down the InfoWars route with heavy advertising for stuff like supplements and cryptocurrencies.

Her husband is another far right loon. They probably reinforce each other’s extremism

In fairness, they had the odd decent article a year or two ago but it’s been going down the toilet for a while now. The recent reliance on the barely literate Laura Perrins shows that they’re scraping the bottom of the barrel completely.

And whatever about the articles themselves, the comments underneath showed that their subscribers were almost exclusively far right, racist scum.

The person I was replying to was first to resort to insults. But how can you say I had no argument when my very next sentence was an argument?

I find most of what Gript does unappealing. I wouldn’t be clicking on many of those articles. But they are a domestic news outlet with a skeleton staff, which focuses on issues that aren’t covered elsewhere and is open about its bias. It’s ridiculous to expect them to be covering world affairs.

But even still, the second most recent opinion piece is headlined, Madness of War on Iran and Lebanon Requires Clear Thinking. I see a piece mourning the death of the poet Gabriel Rosenstock, and you can be sure as hell that a piece about the Pope will be up sooner rather than later, given their particular interests.

I know there's a thing where nobody ever lost money overestimating the stupidity of right wingers and all that but I'm not sure Ireland has a market for such nonsense.

But I am open to the possibility that I could be wrong on that.

The thing about McGuirk is that he clearly is very intelligent, if amoral, and he's an exceptionally good troll who knows how to play the media game.

I don't think that's true of anybody else involved with Grift. The rest of them seem thick as two short planks to me.

I'd imagine McGuirk will get a gig with The Spectator or Spiked or some other UK shltrag now before the Indo inevitably takes him on as a controversialist columnist.

Ian O'Doherty will probably be worried because McGuirk has the ability to do his job as a right wing "anti-establishment" establishment troll, except more effectively.

Has he enough of a profile over there to land such a gig? I was wondering would one of the Irish papers take him on as the token conservative/contrarian columnist but all those slots might be occupied ATM…

I work in agency comms. We don't have Gript on any of our media lists. Literally none, and it was the same in my last place. That's how credible they are.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,111 ✭✭✭✭Loafing Oaf

From a strictly commercial POV that might be the right move as most of their regular commenters seem to be full-on conspiraloons. But obviously that would kill any attempt to build a mainstream conservative outlet that will influence political debate, which McGuirk was clearly striving for

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,186 ✭✭✭✭ancapailldorcha

Parts of the mainstream right are shifting that way though. Look at the UK for one example. It's clearly shifted in favour of Farage's Reform UK such that it's now mostly ex-Tory MPs.

As for grift, it's the spider in the bath. If their fortunes deteriorate, they'll be under pressure to move further to the right by which I mean open racism and conspiracy nonsense. If they move to the centre, they enter a crowded market in which their toxic brand means they have no chance.

I did not insult you - I literally posted: "Seriously?"

Are we at the point now where those with right wing beliefs (which is what the grift target audience is) are the snowflakes that they so despise?

McGurk peaked with his tweet of that fella wearing a a eff FFG t shirt a few years ago and calling him a dose. In fairness, yer man looked to be right dose

It’s been downhill ever since for him. I wonder what ever became of the dose? Probably living in Berlin now….

Read it, no fan of gript, but the police complaint at the bottom is absolutely insane. This is a really low point, for journalists to run off to the gardai for outlets you don't like.

This is what happens when journos buy fully into culture wars crap. A lot of it is performative, they want to be seen to be standing up for "progressive" values. anyone who doesn't ascribe to their point of view is a heretic/evil/the fash so their views can automatically be ignored. It also saves having to engage and maybe think for themselves.

In some ways it's the same mindset that'd happily see fallen women sent off to the Mother and Baby homes in the 50's. Same mindset, different iterations of faith, Catholic in the 1950's, progressivism now.

When most of us say "social justice" we mean equality under the law opposition to prejudice, discrimination and equal opportunities for all. When Social Justice Activists say "social justice" they mean an emphasis on group identity over the rights of the individual, a rejection of social liberalism, and the assumption that unequal outcomes are always evidence of structural inequalities.

Good to see the gript rag get taken on. I still find it funny how they are facing a case and possible big payout to an Algerian migrant. The thought of subscriber money potentially going into the pocket of an Algerian migrant is quite funny. I hope the lad enjoys every penny :)

I see Trump sycophant and McGuirk sidekick Sarah Ryan has found a new temporary home in like minded company with Paul Treyvaud, Elaine Mullalley and Nick Delahunty on Treyvauds podcast 'The Irish Question'.

They spent 10 minutes on this weeks podcast complaining about how Catholicism is being demonised. Complained about the notion of taking the sacraments out of schools and doing them outside school hours on parents own time. Delahunty stated that Christianity is vital, without it there is no moral compass.

At no point did any of them even mention Trumps recent unprovoked and unjustified attacks on The Pope, his presumably blasphemous image of him as Jesus Christ or JD Vance lecturing The Pope on understanding of the Bible.

These guys are literal caricatures without an ounce of credibility, critical thought or self awareness.

    @griptmedia

    Statement

John McGuirk is currently suspended on full pay pending an internal process concerning governance and related issues. Contrary to reports the suspension is not related to editorial differences. No final determination has been made. Gript cannot comment further while the process is ongoing.

McGuirk responded, saying a lot of nothing, especially nothing about Fatima Gunning

    ...

I am so proud of the team we built – from Ben Scallan becoming a bona fide star reporter, to watching writers like Maria Maynes and Jason Osborne blossom into serious and credible commentators, and watching Matt Treacy become the country’s single greatest authority on IPAS spending. I am also proud of our gaining the faith and confidence of established names like Cormac Lucey, Kevin Myers, and Laura Perrins. I am proud of everything that all of us have accomplished together.

To all of you, and also to Noble: I have missed your comradeship and friendship, and I hope I have led you well over the past seven years. I look forward to talking to you all personally, when circumstances permit. In all of this, Gript Media’s staff have played no role and have, so far as I can see, conducted themselves with the immense professionalism I have come to expect of them, in undoubtedly trying circumstances.

I’m also particularly grateful to Sarah Ryan, who has been both the best friend, and the best podcast co-host, anyone could have hoped to have

    ....

In a contest between Cosgrave and McGuirk, why can't they both lose?

    I'm partial to your abracadabra
