    We bought one of the robot vaccums, but it's going back. It's a dumb robot, needs to be plugged in to charge and doesn't seem to know where it is. For €50, you cant expect much

    Thanks. I had a look at it earlier and it seems quite limited alright. If it had miraculously come with a charging dock and could be scheduled to do the business automatically, then I'd have given it a shot... Will have to dream on instead, for now anyway!

    Seems the stingy Germany need to refresh the marketing department.

    It's gone to $h1t€! You used to get free items, now it's 20% discounts of crap that will rot you teeth.

    It wasn't that long ago where you'd get free pastries, or jars and jars of peanut butter. I don't even like peanut butter, but the birds do. So at least it was something. So did the mice, they had to move when they were caught in the catch and release traps.

    Anyway, the Parkrun offers has ended as well. So there's no benefit really for the coupons. The "just for you" coupons are junk. Listing discounts again, on products I've largely never bought.

    If it became any less generous I'd be paying them

    But I'd rather rock bottom prices rather than promotional crap. And discounters shouldn't be wasting money advertising on TV.

    Remember when Lidl used to be cheap? They've lost their way tbh, and Aldi are worse.

    I don't find aldi worse, find them considerably better, and cheaper. But now likes of dunnes are better value once you have the voucher. That's how bad lidl have gotten. Greed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,701 ✭✭✭✭OmegaGene

    they are all much the same you have to scout the bargains from all the shops in the area really, the Dunnes vouchers are good if you get bargains while using them

    People I know get caught in the trap and start spending more to save more

    The internet isn’t for everyone

    It's still a case of ducking and diving.

    Lidl have these, for example, cheaper than Dunnes even with the vouchers.

    I've always been of the opinion that Lidl and Aldi are the go-to shops if you're just buying budget brands and want the best or close-to-best value. For my sins, I actually did a full comparison in the last week of the prices for over 60 items on our regular shopping list at Lidl and Aldi. As expected, the vast majority of items were identically priced, with only 10-15% of items on the list differing in price. For these items, the difference was typically only 5c to 10c, and not consistently in favour of one supermarket versus the other. There were only 2 exceptions, which involved a much more significant difference - so much so that I want to go back to verify things.

    Anyway, while I appreciate that everyone's household shopping list is individual and varies, I'll throw up my findings here in a few days time. As for Tesco and Dunnes, I don't have much time for them anymore as while you might find price matches on certain budget products, you'll get caught out on other items like jacks rolls etc.

    having a shopping list isn’t for me, we float around and see what’s on offer and that’s what’s for dinner etc

    3 meat or fish for €9 is great

    I feel like that as someone who shops for just myself, I'm subsidising the 10 off 50 offers on Dunnes Stores etc.

    Not complaining at all, it's just an aspect of how the economics of supermarket shopping is.

    I appreciate how these offers do offer some value for hard pressed families.

    I do about 90% of my food shopping in Lidl. For the most part their stuff is grand and cheaper than Tesco or Dunnes. But it does wind me up a bit that 1000 points will only get you a tenner voucher.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,701 ✭✭✭✭OmegaGene

    the points system is much the same as Tesco in that respect

    Singletons should only go to Dunnes to stock up on basics that are same price as everywhere, and use the 5 off 25, otherwise bring your wallet elsewhere.

    Recently, popped to Dunnes, procured tins of tomatoes, beans, sweetcorn, lentils, eggs, cream crackers, cheese slices - €20.06 - €5 app coupon = €15.06 aka 25% discount

    Snap. I had the same useless discounts. I don't buy sweets. Why are these measly discounts on junk food and not healthy products?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,633 ✭✭✭✭odyssey06

    Worse - I buy the travel vitamin sweets but of course sold out when I looked for them!

    We've been buying lots of fruit and veg from Lidl and mostly healthy food this year as we're all trying to improve our diets as a family. The sweet vouchers are absolutely useless to us too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 41,951 ✭✭✭✭Hotblack Desiato

    Finally got a coupon off something that I'd actually buy. 20% off one bottle of sparkling water. I'd get through 3 or 4 a week.

    I'll look forward to 50% off an apple or whatever later.

    Caller, search for a local veg&fruit grower/supplier/shop. You may find they give a better deal and you are supporting local firm rather than a multinational

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,665 ✭✭✭corsav6

    Unfortunately our local fruit and veg shop closed down and the next nearest is in Westport which isn't a town we'd be in during the day.

    The one in Castlebar was awful handy as it was right beside the local butcher so we'd get the main shop in Lidl and then the fruit/veg and meat on the way home.

    Ok, double-checking done now. So, for all the products we get in our household regularly (I mean everything!), the only current price differences between Aldi and Lidl were as follows:

    • Sweet potatoes: Aldi €1.29 v Lidl €1.69 -> Aldi -€0.40
    • Courgettes: Aldi €1.49 v Lidl €1.69 -> Aldi -€0.20
    • Garlic bulbs: Aldi €1.09 v Lidl €1.19 -> Aldi -€0.10
    • White rice: Aldi €1.19 v Lidl €1.29 -> Aldi -€0.10
    • Baby spuds: Aldi €1.49 v Lidl €1.39 -> Aldi +€0.10
    • Aubergine: Aldi €0.85 v Lidl €0.79 -> Aldi +€0.06
    • Pineapple slices*: Aldi €1.45 v Lidl €1.39 -> Aldi +€0.06
    • EV olive oil*: Aldi €5.49 v Lidl €5.45 -> Aldi +€0.04
    • Soy milk: Aldi €0.82 v Lidl €0.80 -> Aldi +€0.02

    *Where products come in different weights, the price of the smaller weight product has been adjusted to represent the equivalent larger weight.

    So, all in all, the difference currently between shopping for one off of everything at Aldi versus Lidl is less than one euro, in Aldi's favour. I'd say both supermarkets are always matching each other, so some of the differences above will disappear soon enough. Incidentally, I actually find Aldi much harder to find stuff in than Lidl, as they seem to have more products and sometimes they are not shelved intuitively.
