Ah here - another example of you lads having zero sense of irony and zero sense of self awareness. Lying, misrepresenting, making wild proclamations, and when challenged - tumbleweed.

The real crux of the issue is why the charge of criminal damage proceeded to court in the first place. There was no mention of any damage to the phone in the first complaint to the police. It wasn't until over two weeks later that they mentioned scratches that may have been caused by the incident. The photos of these scratches provided were not contemporaneous with the incident, and it was a four year old phone. The charges were completely overblown, and given the past behaviour of Sophia*, it should have been considered whether the allegations were made in good faith. This was part of why the charges were overturned. As per the judgement

The judge said she did not think "the complainant was as 'alarmed and distressed' as they portrayed themself to be by these messages and this course of conduct".

She also ruled that "the complainant was not giving entirely truthful evidence" during the trial in September, while Linehan was "generally a credible witness".

*Sophia pretended to be a detransitioner to infiltrate gender critical groups, thereby getting access to the phone numbers and other details of gender critical women, which was used to stalk and harass them with nuisance phone calls.

Not what I was referring to. You and ACD and For Petes Sake and the other handful of men who, just like Linehan, only support women who agree with them, keep saying that people here just hate trans people, nothing more. When we have explained over and over that we do not give a hoot if people are trans or gender non conforming, we just can't agree that it makes them the opposite sex (which it doesn't) and because gender is not the same as sex, it can't supercede sex. And there are people who just say they're the opposite sex, who aren't actual trans people - taking advantage of the absurd notion that gender expression makes you a man if female, or a woman if male. I personally don't care if genuine transwomen use women's toilets and changing rooms or are sent to women's prisons, but men just wearing women's clothes are not transwomen and shouldn't be using women's and girls' spaces. And it's unfair for anyone with male biology to be taking part in women's sports.

This is what Linehan was originally saying - this is how he was speaking out for women (even though ACD says he never ever did but that's a lie), it was obviously a genuinely held position. There was never any "trans people are awful for being trans" - there was just concern about gender being viewed as a replacement for biological sex. However now, Linehan has gone to the dark side and I find him vile, but he was once nothing like he is now, he was politically to the left and was very moderate, no matter what those pretending otherwise lie. And the stuff about how most people don't have a clue who he is (debatable) isn't even relevant - he never claimed he was Madonna level famous (he tweeted opinions, which is what anyone uses Twitter for, whether they're famous or not). I just don't get the obsession with saying that kind of stuff, or undermining someone's achievements. Objectionable behaviour is sufficient to criticise someone - adding on lies is unnecessary.

Wasn't the whole thing though that you can't change sex (as that's a biological impossibility) but that you can legally change gender? So that's why we call them transgender people?

    Or am I missing something?

I know it gets muddied with sports as that's the one area where competition comes into it, but other than that quagmire I would have thought most logical people think sex doesn't come into it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 428 ✭✭Mother Shaboobu

That would be: repeatedly snarling we just hate trans people because we view it as obviously unfair for male people to take part in women's sports, completely appalling for men who have not even had surgery to use women's spaces and be placed in women's prisons.

But that's exactly the point. Gender (which is only behaviour) is now considered sufficient to declare someone a man when they're a woman, and a woman when they're a man. But woman and man are not genders - they refer to biology.

'Man' is a gender though, so is 'woman'. That's literally what both those words are.

'male' and 'female' denote biological sex.

We're really just arguing linguistic semantics at this point.

I don't think any sane person thinks a trans woman literally becomes a biological female. That would be a bit mad.

Except now some trans people are pretending/claiming to believe that they can actually change sex. I've seen countless examples online over the last few years. Claiming to have real menstrual cycles due to hormones is a common one (and as someone with severe PMT this really grinds my gears, I feel physically like I'm about to faint in a heap and extremely unwell with a temperature for about 48 hours before every period, and it's really hard to keep going in work. This in addition to the cramps and nausea once my period begins).

“Never argue with an idiot. They will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.”

It's not at all linguistic semantics though. I don't know why you say otherwise, but man/woman/girl/boy are not genders. Like male and female, they refer to sex.

    From the World Health Organisation:

    1000027652.jpg

Feminine and masculine denote gender. People who say e.g. Eddie Izzard is a woman because he wears women's clothes, shoes, a handbag and lipstick... well it should be obvious to anyone how stupid and preposterous that is. It isn't a costume. Being a woman is a lot more than clothes, shoes, accessories and make-up. Just like being a man is obviously a lot more than just sporty clothes and short hair.

And there is nothing wrong with being gender non conforming - and it's always been a thing - but it's only in recent times that it has been decided it's enough to make a woman a man, or a man a woman.

Being trans however (undergoing hormone regime and surgery) does make a man a transwoman and a woman a transman. It's more than just gender non conforming - that's why it used to be referred to as being trans-sexual.

No, nobody can truly believe that anyone can become the opposite sex, yet it's insisted that transwomen ARE women, and transmen are men; men can have babies because transmen are men. It's this incoherent nonsense that people are objecting to - not the existence of trans people.

This one is one of the most offensive and mind boggling to me. Like the main thing they think is period related is diarrhea and stomach cramps wtf? Like no, you literally dont have a uterus, or ovaries, or even a hormonal cycle, go see a doctor about your symptoms because its physically impossible for you to have a period, or PMT or anything related to it. I guess they dont understand that menstrual cramps are the uterus contracting and not a bowel issue lol. Absolute delusional nonsense. Not to mention the frequent misogynistic comments about how they are "irrational", moody or feel dumb so it totally must be pmt 🙄

How am I lying when I've described what you've literally done. You HAVE been repeating over and over that people here just hate trans people (completely disregarding the actual points being made in relation to women and girls). Give over with the silly denial.

I have said anyone supporting Graham Linehan in his obsession with trans people, do so because they hate trans people.

I say this because the idea that he is doing this out of the goodness of his heart and because he wants to protect women is total and utter bullshit, as outlined by his support for women being butchered by Israel and executed by ICE agents.

I can guarantee I have done more than anyone else in this thread in support for women’s sport, so I won’t have someone lecture me and tell me what my beliefs are.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 3,096 ✭✭✭aero2k

Re your last paragraph: how the hell can you give such a guarantee? What do you know about the posters here and what they have done or do IRL?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,337 ✭✭✭✭Boggles

I have said anyone supporting Graham Linehan in his obsession with trans people, do so because they hate trans people.

They think they hate trans people, when asked they don't know any or have never met any.

When asked how many trans people play organised sport in the Ireland, the answer is zero.

When asked have they ever met a trans person in a toilet or dressing room, the answer is no.

But this is the most important issue ever to face women apparently.

And to say otherwise means you hate certain women.

It's delusion stacked on delusion, soaked in the plain old dark well of bigotry.

It is lots of things, but at this stage it is just boring.

It's one of the reasons why Linehan is moving onto celebrating mothers being executed.

It's all part of the grift.

    But but but women, right?

I don't think I believe Linehan when he says he didn't mean to share the part about repealing women's rights to vote in the US. He's been lying about supporting women for years now among other things.

Indeed. A somewhat related issue which I have mentioned on Boards before is I am a BJJ instructor in a school I mostly own myself. I noticed the ratio of male:female was not great. It was mostly men training.

So when women showed up and walked away without trying out - or showed up once and I asked them if they were going to come back and they said no - I asked them why. And their answer was essentially that it all just seemed so intimidating rolling with men when they had no idea what they were doing. Training tends to be mixed sex even if women generally pair off with women. And even new comer men are intimidated on first seeing it in action. Let alone women in a mixed sex environment.

So basically I realized that with some proper introduction without males around these women would get a feel for it and then when introduced into the "main" class they would feel more safe/confident about it. So I started a "female only feeder class" which was essentially free so ENTIRELY at my own expense of time and money. They would get a certain amount of classes without paying on the hope they would sign up to the "real" class.

It worked better than I had even hoped. A lot of women really want to try it and learn it - especially as it is a good martial art for women for several reasons. For example if attacked by males with sexual intent - males will obviously want to pull the women to the ground and get on top of them generally. Which is EXACTLY where BJJ training is focused. One of my own partners in fact was attacked by a male with sexual intent in maynooth late one night and being a high level BJJ practitioner she essentially let him take her to the ground whereupon he was treated to a broken arm and a loss of consciousness.

However one day in walks an obvious male presenting obviously as a women - claiming to be transgender and demanding to be allowed join the feeder class. I said no and started to explain why - but really upon realizing the answer was "No" this person had already heard enough - started shouting at me about "hate" and "bigotry" and more - pointing phones at me and filming me and so forth.

I was later contacted by another trainer in another sport who informed me that I and my school were on this persons social media - all the pictures and videos that were taken during the encounter. The trainer said the same thing had happened to them and this sub human person was basically going around doing it everywhere. Posting all the media in the hopes of "going viral" and when it failed they would delete it all again and go to the next sport/school to try it again. Since they had the charisma and likeability of a diseased Jackal however it simply never took off. For all I know they are still going around trying it and failing.

So like "Pete's sake" above I also feel I go around doing what I can for "female sports" for this reason and quite a few others (my contributions are not limited to just this one anecdote). Though I am not so far gone that I would declare based on nothing that I have done "more than anyone else" on the thread. I've done a lot and intend to do a lot more. I do not feel I need to big up or exaggerate my credentials in a "How much I do for women" pissing contest though.

Had this obnoxious opportunistic horror (who I hasten to point out I do not REMOTELY judge as representative of Trans People in general) stopped to let me talk I would have explained that I see Biological Gender as binary and immutable - I see Social Gender as nebulous and transient over time and flexible. And in some ways imaginary even.

I understand that certain things in the world have been, or should be, split along biological Gender. Other things have been, or should be, split on social gender. If someone wants to present as transitioned in the latter I have absolutely no issue with that and support them in every way and will fight fiercely against anyone who tries to hamper them. If someone wants their transition however to apply to the former - I will resist that just as fiercely unless they have good argument for why something that is CURRENTLY split on biological gender should actually be split on social gender instead. Sport for me is NOT one of those things and I have yet to hear any good arguments as to why it should be. Not even one good argument. Just. One.

But of course on occasion (though notably not yet on Boards.ie which is nice) when I have explained this or told that anecdote I have had the usual "TERF" style words screeched at me up to and including being told how much I am a bigot and "hate trans people". Because as has been noted on threads like this it is much easier to screech labels than engage with a persons actual positions and points.

Thankfully I do not hate Trans People or I would be on here acting like this horrible sub human terror who is going around trying to go viral at the expense of the hobby and/or livelihood of people like me in sports - is somehow "The norm" and representative of Trans People or Trans Activists. The absolute opposite is true and these individuals who go around milking the gender wars for attention should be treated exactly like that. Individuals. Horrible ones.

It's your claim that he's been lying about supporting other women for years. You completely disregard any evidence to the contrary so you can continue claiming this, to allow the pretence that your position is pure and unsullied (when in reality you are just a black/white devotee of a set of 'good' thoughts).

I agree he has now fallen into a right wing pool of people, I don't think this is uncommon to people facing the level of pushback he has faced (Kellie Jay Keen similar), to gravitate to anyone who is providing you with support. I don't agree with everything he says or supports by any means, but I don't think it is believable that he wants to strip women of voting rights, and think his explanation of skim reading the tweet makes sense.

I didn't interpret his response to the ICE shooting as anti the woman at the time, I thought he was annoyed at people he deemed 'left' being up in arms about a woman being shot, but not giving a damn about women being abused (told to suck lady dicks, signs saying 'the only good TERF is a dead TERF' are common rhetoric) by transactivists. That he felt they were hypocrites with selective outrage.

“Never argue with an idiot. They will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.”

There is no evidence to the contrary. Zero. None.

He hasn't "fallen in". He's moved to the right and now he has to adopt their views or get kicked out. It's how dogma works. Nobody made him into this. He was probably Ireland's greatest comedy writer years ago and now he's just another man on an internet crusade.

Your last paragraph is just a denial of reality, honestly. He's fine with women being murdered it seems so long as trans people aren't in their changing rooms. Odd view but we're all entitled to believe what we believe.

You don't have to like someone to sympathise with their struggle on one particular issue. The trans activists tried to use the police and courts in Britain to bring him down but failed dismally actually shooting themselves in the foot in the process.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 2,019 ✭✭✭OscarMIlde

You have been provided with evidence to the contrary in this thread, you just choose to adapt the 'no true scotsmen' defense to avoid categorising is as such.

Falling in versus moving to the right is just semantics. Which you are using to argue against me, rather than admit that it is more likely that he retweeted something in haste and didn't read that part, not that he genuinely supports removing the right to vote for women. He said he didn't see that but you choose to disbelieve him. I don't like or support all his positions but it is in no way believable that he is someone who wants to strip women of the right to vote. It is entirely at odds with anything he has ever said or done.

This is the lingiustic semantics I'm talking about. We now live in a world where different dictionaries say different things.

You interperet Man/Woman to be linked to biological Male/Female. As do many others.

Other's link those two words to gender rather than biological sex.

The Cambridge dictonary now lists 'Male' as gendered adjective.

    image.png

So we are currently living in a world where these two words have two different definitions.

Whether people like it or not, language evolves and changes. At no point in human history has it remained stagnant. Try having a read of Canterbury Tales for a great example of how English has changed in 600 years.

For me, this is the absolute crux of the problem at the moment. As you quite rightly said, it's the basis of the 'a trans woman is a woman' arguement. If you come from your opinion where woman/female are both relate to sex, then of course this statement is completely incorrect. If you come at it from the Cambridge dictonary definition, it is correct.

I'm not sure there's really an end solution for the whole debate and it's just going to go on and on into perpetuity, ad naseum until everyone (including dictionary writers) agree on the definition of two words.

Suffice to say, and back to the topic at hand, I think Graham Linehan (and humanity as a whole) really needs to stop wasting so much time debating a topic that impacts a miniscule part of the world's population.

I stumbled on a twitter page the other week which linked to a discussion board for Trans women who were mimicking menstruation by sticking frozen tomato suace capsules up their arse and letting it melt and ooze out of their arse in imitation of menstruation.

Please don't anyone try to tell me that people like that aren't fetishists who are severley mentally unwell but according to some they have to be considered the same as women or your a transphobe.

You and ACD and For Petes Sake and the other handful of men who, just like Linehan, only support women who agree with them

I fail to see how my disdain for Graham Linehan and his antics translates to a lack of support for women.

But since you ask, I think it's a bit weird seeing someone who was born a man on the medals podium in a women's event, I think it's a bit weird if you have a person with a penis is in a female dressing room.

But for the vast majority of women, I think there are infinitely more things which are infinitely more concerning in terms of preservation of their rights. My wife has never once expressed any concern about having to share a dressing room with a trans person because it just isn't something that comes up.

On the flip side, this is the second thread where the MAGA movement has come in for praise by people who think women's rights begin and end with trans people being kept out of female spaces. I think that is genuinely terrifying and the spread of this sort of ideology is far more threatening to the basic freedoms of women than a tiny number of trans people, 99.99% of whom are no threat to anyone.

So I do support women, I just think trans rights are completely peripheral to that, the actual magnitude of the trans issue is tiny but a lot of very bad people are making hay preying on it.
