Based on nothing but my own speculation, I'm assuming that it's only one year, as we didnt really have the budget to keep him

We signed Connors, with the expectation that he'd be gone at the end of the season.

He probably wanted more than we could offer him, so compromised with a 1yr deal, with the expectation that if he continues to perform, he'll get a longer deal next year

At least that's what I'm hoping for

Will be Irish Qualified by 27th of July 2027, give or take a few days.

Great that SHL is staying although ideally it would have been a 2 year deal minimum. Probably have to go through the whole rigmarole again in the latter half of next season. But at least he's tied down for now.

    Munster team for Saturday

Munster Rugby: Mike Haley; Shane Daly, Alex Nankivell, Dan Kelly, Andrew Smith; JJ Hanrahan, Craig Casey (C); Jeremy Loughman, Diarmuid Barron, Michael Ala’alatoa; Edwin Edogbo, Fineen Wycherley; Tom Ahern, John Hodnett, Gavin Coombes.

Replacements: Lee Barron, Josh Wycherley, Conor Bartley, Jack O’Donoghue, Brian Gleeson, Ben O’Donovan, Seán O’Brien, Alex Kendellen.

Surprised that Crowley isn't starting as I believe he was for for this week

That team's not that different, bar the front row, from the team Connacht lost 17-15 to in Limerick.

Great news on Moose. Do Munster normally post their team on a Thursday. I thought the norm was Friday lunchtime for teams playing games on Saturday

Since McMillan arrived he usually announces his team on Thursday

Wonderful news re SHL. He'll stand out again next season and is the future Ireland No7 which is why the IRFU was keen that he stay on the island of Ireland.

Huge game Saturday. I see that juvenile Coombes trying to stir up animosity between the teams in today's Indo. We despise them, they despise us schtick. Yawn…….

Was anyone listening to Billy Holland on the Last Word?

He did a preview for the match based exclusively on the presumption that Munster would win. While accepting Connacht are at home, in good form, and that he doesn't know who Connacht will field, he said both teams will be equal, and as a result Munster are in a strong position.

    Solid logic.

That sort of stuff gives me a warm feeling inside. They are so rattled and inward looking now after the last few weeks. We will have the mental edge, home advantage and the better 15 and 23.

Connacht to win by 10 with a BP.

Cardiff and Ulster will lose tomorrow night as well.

I had another shite experience with the ticketing system today. However, on Saturday, everyone who ended up with a season ticket miles from where they wanted will be relieved to have secured one at all.

    Connacht abú.

I remember Ulster's youngsters bate us out the gate when we had a team that was, on paper, far better and should have won comfortably.

The time to count points is at the final whistle. Munster are never easily beaten and this weekend won't be different.

Paddy Power have it at 10/11 +3.

Signing a good solid second row would really be the cherry on the cake now to complete the squad for next season. Not sure it will happen if they have spent that money on retaining SHL though. Hopefully there might be a surprise yet.

Hopefully the team and the crowd can rise to the occasion Saturday night, huge opportunity to beat Munster.

Yeah a lock and th prop look like our last couple of pieces. Hope they can get it done.

nah, we have this in the bag.

Pretty certain of 6th and we could get 5th with a bit of luck

I kind of felt the last few weeks Munster were rolling with a little bit of momentum and they have a tendency to show up in these late season games when they need a result, but after seeing the Munster 23 and the injuries they have, along with the home advantage I think Connacht should be going into this as favourites.

Munster are without their best two players by a distance in Beirne & Crowley, and a couple of other important players and their bench looks pretty weak.

That said - when the teams met in October, Munster had a really poor team out on paper (also no Beirne, Crowley, no Casey then, no Farrell etc), and still won 17-15. If Connacht had a half decent kicker in the side then though they'd have won that game.

McMillan's comments yesterday were pretty stark and concerning, but sometimes that can lead to a siege mentality and galvanise the team a bit.

    Should be a cracker.

Calm down there boyo! Ye can get 54 points max. Leinster and Lions only need 2 points from their last two games to surpass that.

Bulls are at home to the two Italian sides That's 10 points. Ye're not catching them.

Munster only need 4 points to surpass that.

That plus in the case of a tie break ye currently have 8 wins compared to the 10 wins of all the teams I've mentioned

Ye have a slim chance of 6th, ye haven't a hope of 5th.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,405 ✭✭✭MarinersBlues

The bit of luck for 5th was the Bulls drawing with Zebre and losing to Treviso.

    6th is practically guaranteed.

So not a hope of 5th then, as I said. And pray tell, how is 6th guaranteed?

That would be a hell of a lot more than “a bit of luck” and I don’t see it happening. I think we can pass out Ulster and Cardiff given the fixtures they have left which would leave us in 7th. The bit of luck would be catching Munster if they don’t beat the Lions at home but given how badly the latter travel I struggle to see that happening.

I am reasonably confident, mainly because when Lancaster has had an extended training block, we have tended to deliver a performance. The best example of this was the Glasgow game, where we were well prepared and had a gameplan that we believed in, and didn't lose confidence in when we went behind.

I don't think Munster under McMillan are quite as well coached, but they are always a sticky team and a difficult proposition in interpros. There's a very clear edge to this fixture in recent times - I don't think there's any danger of them not being up for it, regardless of the off the pitch distractions. Hopefully the absence of Beirne and Crowley swings it in our favour.

I'd like to see us target Hanrahan hard. He's a pretty unathletic 33 year old who is going to have to play 80 mins, if we can force him to make 10+ tackles that should have an effect on his decision making and execution as the game wears on.

There could be some serious hay to be made in the scrum towards the end of the game also. If Edogbo is subbed, Munster could end up with a tight 5 of Wycherley, Barron, Bartley, Ahern, Wycherley. That's an extremely weak scrummaging unit - Wycherley Jr and Barron are small, Bartley is inexperienced at this level, and there's no proper tighthead lock. Munster try to have one of Edogbo or Kleyn on the pitch where possible, and lost the only two games this season where neither started. I can't remember the Glasgow game specifically, but I do remember their scrum being dismantled vs Stormers with Ahern and Wycherley in the second row.

Edogbo played 80 mins for the first time since his return from injury against Exeter, and played 76 after coming off the bench early vs Ulster a fortnight ago. Doing similar tomorrow could be key for Munster.

Coombes wasn't exactly incendiary in his comments. Fairly bland, uninspired, middle-of-the-road rivalry stuff…exactly the clichés you'd expect. Seems like he can't even raise his banter to an international level.

Hanrahan at 10 is a gift for us. Last year up in Castlebar we were just not at the same level we are now and Munster are a tad worse. But lets wait until the team is announced

Its the Edinburgh game id be more worried about....

Munster game will take care of itself and i expect 5points for Connacht....

But Edinburgh away is abit of a banana skin....they have nothing to play for but would probably enjoy pìssing on Connachts parade....

    Boom !!

this is going to be a cracking match !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,878 ✭✭✭realhorrorshow

Strong squad, pretty much exactly what I wanted to see apart from a couple of swaps between the starting team and the bench. I wonder did we choose to hold back some of our stronger scrummagers after seeing the Munster team.

Don't really get Naughton in the 23 shirt. I guess we might want a second goalkicker in the squad but Gavin would give us much better coverage in case of an injury at centre or wing IMO.

Fifth is impossible (we'd need Lions to not get any match points on the next 2 games while we got all 10, and then Munster would be ahead of us) but sixth is nearly as hard, we'd need Munster and Cardiff to lose both games and Ulster lose at least 1.

I'd bite yer hand off for 7th, we could finish on 52/54 points and be 9th.

He's having a bit of craic, if you can't be optimistic for your team why even bother?

Why even bother when you have lads like yourself coming in here taking umbrage and giving it the 'look here boyo stay in your lane' nonsense.
