theres a campsite within walking distance of the city. (a bus also goes by it)

I stayed there for a concert before.

Buy a tent in the city aswell, and give it back to them when youre leaving.

Would be nice to see that combination in green in the summer series. Has potential for RWC 2027....

still think McCloskey-Hume is better. Hume the more natural 13 and probably the better playmaker.

also heard that Baloucoune is back training after his elbow injury and good chance will be back before the end of the season.

Massive addition to the 1st XV if he’s back soon.

I'm a Munster fan lurking in this thread so I'll take your word for it that Hume & McCloskey is a better combo.

I'm happy to see 2 Irish provinces in the European finals, hopefully both will win and it will cap the season off on a high note for Irish rugby.

Hopefully then Munster win the URC 🤣

That was a coming of age performance from Postlethwaite. Hume is good but I've not seen an Ulster 13 play that well…..since?

Striking how good the Ulster players all look with the ball in hand.

Dave McCann at 6, Izzy at Lock also played brilliantly. Even Henderson looked something like his old self.

The way Jack Murphy and Doak are directing play is a joy to watch.

Murphy already looks like the best kick to touch player in the country and Doak is striking it sweetly off the tee.
If SMcC (who once again was sensational) is injured this week will Ulster go with Postlethwaite and McIlroy in the centres v Stormers?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,477 ✭✭✭✭bilston

Well as far as I know Carson is injured and there was no update on Hume so I suspect he is still out, the chances are that Jude will have to play every game to the end of the season now which is a big ask even for a young player. Personally I'd like to see Jonny Scott given a game, but I'm only basing that off a couple of cameos off the bench. Richie and the coaches will see him at training so can make that judgement.

So yes, it may well be McIlroy back at 13 this weekend.

I said here before the 6N that McCloskey and JP should be Ireland's 12 + 13. They bring such power and aggression while also having the subtly to go with it. I think if Ireland had backed JP, he would be their 13 at the WC, probably too late now. JP has his flaws at 13 but not more than Ringrose has and it should be possible to iron some of them out of JP.

JP may end up as a 12 longer term but with the right coaching, I think he could be a very good 13 now. It's something that really frustrates me about Ireland, they rarely seem to take on a guy with the raw materials and invest in moulding him into the player they want, just stick with the incumbent in the hope he'll refind his best form. It seems to be by accident that they discovered that McCloskey is a baller.

Wasn't the 6Ns Postlethwaite's first time in Ireland camp? Sometimes players take a while to learn the detail.

I think there's every chance players like Postlethwaite, Ward and Edogbo will get a run in the summer with another couple of weeks of camp under their belts.

I don't mean just before the 6N. I'd have to dig back (and check which thread) to see when but it was well before that. My point is that Ireland seem to have a habit of of looking to the past rather than looking to the future in their selections. JP is one and Doak is another that I've argued before that look to me to have the ability to step up to international level with a bit of investment from the national coaches.

I may be losing the run of myself a little, but if Ulster keep going the way they are improving:

I would say a Doak, Murphy, SMcC trio would be more than equipped to start v Fiji this autumn.

9.Doak - Has been playing really well (even when Ulster weren't in RMurphys 1st season), and comfortable making quick decisions, with a good run/pass/kicking game. His workrate is top class.

10.JMurphy - All the basics are done well. He kicking from hand is good and his decision making and organisation of attacks, looking for space all look very good. Size may be a hindrance for Test rugby but put him behind an Irish pack and he may be able to play a bit flatter.

He looks so composed in how he plays, I can see definite potential to improve there esp. surrounded by an Irish pack and the inform Ulster players.

With an eye on the World Cup and as things stand right now with the other 10s at the provinces I think It would be worthwhile to bring Murphy on tour this summer with Ireland.

12.SMcC - 1 of the best 12s in the world.

13.JP - Why not? Apparently he also has a decent left foot (havent seen it yet myself). Im still a big Ringrose fan but JP is definitely worth a look.

Falloon seems to have Ulster defending similar to Ireland and JP looks tough in the tackle and good over the ball.

An alternative Irish team v Fiji:

    1.P.McCarthy

    2.Kelleher

    3.TOT

    4.Izzy

    5.J.McCarthy

    6.McCann

    7.Timoney

    8.B.Ward

    9.Doak

    10.J.Murphy

    11.Z.Ward

    12.SMcC

    13.JP

    14.Baloucoune

    15.Lowry

    16.Stewart

    17.B.Bohan

    18.S.Wilson

    19.Ed Ed

    20.Sean Ed

    21.B.Murphy

    22.H.Byrne

    23.J.Osborne

    Wilhelm de Klerk!

Ulster are going to win this

    And the Challenge Cup!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,477 ✭✭✭✭bilston

Not bad considering the injuries, but really we need McCloskey or Hume back as soon as possible. If it's a hammer for Stu the his season is over. Not sure what the story is with Hume. It's his shoulder isn't it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,477 ✭✭✭✭bilston

At the game I thought Piardi was well and truly against us last night, it turns the officiating team got the big calls right.

While it was disappointing not to win in the circumstances it was still one hell of an effort from the lads given the injuries. Kok, Doak and Augustus were outstanding. Augustus got some standing ovation coming off the pitch. I don't think Vermuelen or Coetzeee ever put in a performance like that in their time at Ulster.

3 points isn't a terrible outcome, but it looks like we will need a BP win next week. I'm very much a Munster fan today!

One final thought, SFM is unplayable at times. What a player! I'd be shocked if he doesn't need up in the Top 14 very soon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,995 ✭✭✭Utah_Saint

    Was also at the game.

I noticed a few incidents that piardi refused to review as he was convinced he was right.

Tough result to take after how it started. But hopefully the performance galvanizes the team for the final

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 689 ✭✭✭user060916

    Which incidents were these?

There was plenty of comms with the TMO who said no need to review incidents

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,725 ✭✭✭Pete_Cavan

Kok getting interfered with in the air for one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 689 ✭✭✭user060916

TMO cleared that one - not sure I agree with it, but can't blame Piardi for jt

TMO cleared SFM’s hit on Timoney by the sideline too but it looked like it needed a closer look.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,725 ✭✭✭Pete_Cavan

I don't think it was formally reviewed. Commentators said the ref would have seen the reply on the big screen but wasn't interested.

The other one the crowd weren't happy about was SFM's tackle on Timoney. I thought that was okay at the time but it looks a bit different in the context of giving a PT for the Doak tackle.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,383 ✭✭✭Paddy_Mag

It was reviewed by TMO who cleared it.

Only one that i thought was wrong was the Kok one. Thought it was a penalty to ulster.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,477 ✭✭✭✭bilston

Again I was at the match so don't have the benefit of analysis, but it seemed to me that there was a high tackle on an Ulster player moments before Hendy's Croc roll. Also surely there was a strong argument for a yellow to the Stormers for killing the ball after Doak's quick tap and Ulster's 70 or 80 metre break up field. Obviously that isn't one the TMO is going to get involved in, but it felt like it should have been yellow to me. I assume the TMO and officials were right to not sanction the hit on Murphy, obviously Jack was falling to the ground so there was clear mitigation, but I thought I saw one angle on the big screen which seemed to suggest a swinging arm.

Anyway, the Henderson and Doak incidents were correct, but at the ground it felt like all those calls were going against us, but you obviously get a different perspective on TV.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,383 ✭✭✭Paddy_Mag

Henderson incident was more serious so that was always going to take precedence.

The Murphy one was accidental. No fault with anyone.

Stormers game was another brilliant performance. 6 Tries! Pack stood up really well despite losing TOT and then the Henderson 20RC.

Any word on McCann. Will he be ok for Glasgow?

I dont think Glasgow have won in Ravenhill for over 10 years.

The way Ulster are playing (Doak-JMurphy) I think they'll score 4 tries and put it up to that Glasgow pack.

    1. Angus Bell - Jamie Bhatti
    2. Tom Stewart- Johnny Matthews
    3. Tom O'Toole - Zander Fagerson
    4. Cormac Izuchukwu - Ally Miller
    5. Charlie Irvine - Alex Samuel
    6. David McCann -Matt Fagerson
    7. Nick Timoney - Rory Darge
    8. Juarno Augustus - Jack Dempsey

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 361 ✭✭big-al

McCann had been ruled out until at least the challenge cup final - doubtful for that also.

I see Montpellier had had a thumping win. At the weekend and find themselves 2nd in the top 14.

Looks like it’ll take something special to beat them!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,477 ✭✭✭✭bilston

The only injured players I can see coming back anytime soon are Hume and possibly Balacoune. I'd wager the rest are gone for the season. That said those two would be important additions.

The other thing is Timoney and Izzy were running on empty on Friday night and getting a bit of treatment as the game went on. We definitely can't afford to lose those two.

I'd be surprised if Cardiff beat the Stormers on Friday so we need to better their result. I'd expect Connacht to beat Edinburgh and as bad as Munster were the other night, they should beat the Lions.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 5,988 ✭✭✭ionadnapóca

Sacha could beat Cardiff on his own! Stormers will go all out for TBP win for Top 2 (64pts)

Will Cardiff (50pts) get anything from that game? I dont think they will.

1 Pt for Ulster would be enough for 51 pts and 8th at least.

    (Connacht will beat Edinburgh)

Ulster better have someone feeding through real time updates to Richie from Cardiff.

Izzy is man handling other forwards. It would be great if he can go again & after 60mins 4 tries are scored and word comes through that Cardiff are losing 0-40! Empty the bench.

I wonder if the Lions came up with a plan to target the Munster game. Use the Leinster game to get the travel out of their system etc. They are playing for a home QF albeit unlikely
