Always remember going to watch Barcelona play at Anfield in the 2001 UEFA Cup

Mikel Arteta (Arsenal) was with the B team at the time so wasn't in the squad but their midfield had Luis Enrique (Barcelona, Spain, PSG) Pep Guardiola (Barcelona, Bayern, City) and Philip Cocu (PSV) with Xavi Hernández (Barcelona) coming off the bench for Enrique in the first leg

That's some set of managers to be playing at the same club at the same time!

And some of the others who played also went on to manage at different levels like Frank de Boer (Ajax, Inter Milan, Netherlands), Michael Reiziger (Ajax interim, Netherlands U21), Patrick Kluivert (Curaçao, Indonesia), Gabri (Sion, Andorra), Sergi (Mallorca, Barcelona interim) and Marc Overmars who became a director of football at Ajax

Even the players who played and didn't go on to be managers all were captaining teams in their career - Carles Puyol, Pepe Reina, Manu Petit and Rivaldo. And they still had the likes of Simaõ, Zenden and de la Peña on the bench, Jari Litmanen was out injured and Iniesta was with Arteta in B team

Some dressing room that must have been!

Doesn't look like Enrique and Arteta ever played together but they would have trained together as Arteta was with the first team and I'd imagine the stories of that time will start coming out in the media before the game

Would be massively advantaegous to Arsenal IFFFFF they can win the league before last game of season to have equal prep time for the game

PSG controlled that second leg in a carbon copy of Arsenal's methods of controlling a game. Makes me worry about the final as PSG copping on and playing proper football could cause Arsenal a problem. Bring back the attack at all costs stuff from the first leg and Arsenal will hammer them.

Yeah PSG shut Bayern down really well yesterday. If their plan was just we're going to score more than you I might fancy Arsenal to pull something off if they had a fully fit squad (really need Timber back), but wouldn't be too hopeful if PSG can get an early goal now after watching that last night. Sure give it a go anyway, don't think it's beyond the realms of possibility Arsenal win but PSG are definitely favourites.

Cant see how Arsenal can hammer them no matter the circumstances but definitely would prefer them more open like last week for sure.

Going by the way they've been playing all season Arsenal will try to stifle PSG. Their cautious approach looks like it might lead to success so especially if they manage to win the EPL they won't be deviating from that. Even if they do win the EPL they're not going to change their overall style at this stage of the season.

After they lost at Man City recently they were praised for being more attacking and having a bit of a go, they still lost that game. I think PSG will win no matter what way Arsenal approach it unless there's a big slice of luck for one team or the other or an early red card that changes the game.

I don't think it makes much difference. Arsenal only have one match per week from here on in, playing in competitive matches is the best prep for them going into the final. You'd hope PSG come in a little undercooked from a lack of competitive fixtures in the leadup.

Yeah Arsenal may decide to sit back and try to exploit space PSG leave but they will need to have players high up the pitch or ready to get high up the pitch to do that. I think they will have a better chance if they try to stop PSG higher up the pitch so they can have players in position to attack immediately after turning the ball over and if they can hold possession as much as possible to push the PSG attack back. It is risky because PSG have so much pace and skill to attack quickly but I think PSG are too good at creating space either through quickly passing or by beating players 1v1 to rely on defending inside your own penalty area.

Arsenal had no striker last year and if it wasn't for two man of match performances by Donnarumma Arsenal would have won.

I give them a great chance.

I am kind of hoping Arsenal wins now because it looks like it will annoy more people than if PSG wins. I can only assume posters very anti- Arteta are Liverpool/Man United fans of a certain vintage.

The successful Italian teams in club football have been doing what Arteta has set Arsenal up to do, for decades. And sure didn’t George Graham invent “1-nil to the Arsenal”?

Plus in the last 10 years only three finals had more than 2 goals. And four of the last six CL finals were won with scoreline of 1-0.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

imo PSG are poor on set pieces, Arsebal could take advantage and control with that

This is, sadly, the only correct response from a neutral. I won't be cheering for Arsenal but they are the team I would hate to see win it just marginally less than PSG.

This is the CL thread not the PL threa......oh wait

That's a bit of a myth in regards to Italy or at least hasn't been true in the life of the average Boards user. The 1906s have no relevance for how Arteta plays.

Only really Mourinho played in the stereotype Italian way and that's because he played that practically everywhere. Capello would have also been defensive to a point.

The sucessful teams from Italy in that time were Sacchi and Carlo's versions of Milan and a Juve team that could play lovely football.

Three games left each. PSG are 6 points ahead of Lens, who they face, in the middle of 3 games in 8 days.

    image.png

PSG have a local derby, whilst Arsenal have 2, the second of which is will be three days before the Conference League final, so a big risk to Arsenal could be tripping over the Palace flip-flops! The only "real" game they have is this weekend, where they face a West Ham side desperately needing a result.

The Paris derby should be played with PSG as league champions. If not, they won't want a repeat of the Coupe de France tie earlier this season, where Paris FC knocked out the holders, who were going for three-in-a-row CdF's. Its a 2 week holiday then for the current CL holders, while Arsenal will be hoping to keep things ticking over, week by week.

Could play some turgid stuff too. Remember the 2003 final. Dear God it was absolutely brutal, including the shootout too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,819 ✭✭✭jacool

Worst final for me was 1998, Real Madrid 1-0 Juventus.

Watched it in Las Vegas. Thank God the drinks were free.

So could everyone. 2008 was no better but that doesn't make all EPL teams boring and defensive.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,561 ✭✭✭Jinglejangle69

If Arsenal win the PL and CL with whatever style they play will people recall in years how clubs who didn’t win anything at least tried to play football the correct way, which ever way that’s meant to be????

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,259 ✭✭✭Sudden Valley

I think it's more likely that arsenal will be remembered for their turgid style or conservative style when they are against more exciting teams then if it was just two boring teams going for the respective titles.

I dont like man city or PSG but the Arsenal owner sounds like a bit of a prick too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,864 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Is he a prick that cheated 151 times ?

People are forgetting it's not just a dislike of these owners. Some are actual cheats.

If Arsenal win the Champions League it will mostly be remembered as being their first and little else will matter. They are not nearly cynical or defensive enough to be remembered for that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,259 ✭✭✭Sudden Valley

No I think it's more just his personality not related to football, moving his nfl team out of st.louis for money reasons, really betraying the fans.

I think this year will be remembered as the set piece year. Hopefully it prompts the refs to stop the mma grappling seen at every corner.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,224 ✭✭✭✭TheCitizen

PSG might be better than they were last season. Still ahead of Arsenal, might be further ahead even.

I give Arsenal a chance but they’ll need luck or decisions going their way. All things being equal PSG wins.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,864 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Ya fair enough on set piece year.

As for NFL all he done was moved the Cleavland Rams back to Los Angeles after St.Louis betrayed the LA Rams fans in the 90s. American sport is a crock of sht in general and that's normal by their stupid systems.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,612 ✭✭✭giveitholly

You do realise your childish posts on here reflects more on you than the posters you are replying to. Why don't you debate the posts you don't agree with instead of posting like a 10 year old would?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,259 ✭✭✭Sudden Valley

I think that is scant consolation for the st Louis fans who hosted them for 21 years. Its a prick move from an owner that is from Missiouri.

Ya but it only reflects badly on him if it's something that's underhand and against the norm or rules. It's part of the game over there and the St.Louis fans who jumped on an imported bandwagon can cry me a river as can all sports fans who give their time and money to that franchise and draft corporate bullsht.

Hate the game not the player in terms of when Kronke done to St.Louis.
