Subnautica 2 early access is launching 14th May for 30 euro on PC and xbox. Devs say it will be at least 2 years before full release of 1.0 😩😩😩

I have no choice to wait anyway but i think if it was on ps5, I'd still like to wait for 1.0 but 2 years is a long time, I think I'd just dive straight in.... Eh....EH???!!!

Copilot on console being thrown out of the plane with no parachute.

Almost feel like buying an Xbox to show I support this.

I think they've realised that making their products crap by cramming Copilot into every nook and cranny wasn't going to drive AI adoption, but rather drive people away from using MS products. I mean, there is zero use case for Notepad to have AI in it…

Must be so much bad blood behind the scenes between Unknown Labs and Krafton after what happened.

Hope UL get the last laugh, release a great game, make their money and then all leave to start a new studio in a few years.

Another day of Xbox completely floundering as a brand and the corporate execs making all the wrong decisions.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,636 ✭✭✭Cordell

Maybe AI will help them do something about the day 1 flops slop we're getting at the moment, and spend those money more wisely on proper games.

That’s a poorly written article looking to stir ****. I’m no Xbox fan and I’m quite skeptical if they can rebound but I’m willing to see how it works out. A few things about that article.

    1. The Copilot abolishment is a footnote when the article is coming from an anti AI stance
    2. Loads of people got moved around or promoted. This cherry picks a few people
    3. Asha the new CEO has working relationships with some of these people and might value their skills that aren’t just AI

Lets wait and see - we will get the real answers soon instead of needing to sensationalise a fairly standard company re-org

It looks like a bunch of schmucks that had success in AI, put in place to increase shareholder value but have no idea of console and gaming market. Not to mention their previous success was more to do with investors pivoting away from the trainwreck of blockchain and jumping on AI as the next best thing.

You don't have to be a gamer to understand the videogame market but you should at least have some experience or knowledge of consumer goods and markets and everyone of these sounds like placements made by high level executive boards that haven't a clue.

Microsoft managed to transfer billions and billions from cohort A to cohort B with very average output game wise. Cohort B super happy with the experience.

The XBox Series hardware was very well designed, solid, and super quiet. And not fugly like PS5. They would make perfect Steam Machines.

Eurogamer reporting that around 170 staff have been let go from Build A Rocket Boy, following the launch of the MindsEye DLC

    https://www.eurogamer.net/mindseye-developer-build-a-rocket-boy-may-2026-layoffs

Brings the total employees down to around 80. Can't see the studio lasting much longer.

I'm sure it's all someone elses fault though…..

MS are probably a great case study to see how one can go from nearly winning their second gen, to losing traction for third, and then having better hardware but ruined by bad software/games and terrible pricing (and I still hold the Series S as responsible for stifled growth).

Hopefully yer wan can bring them back to proper competitors. I think targeting the pc market is a bad move, but I'll wait and see. Pricing and comparison to the Steam Machine will determine MS's future, not competition with Sony, who appear to be moving back to console only and exclusivity. I think MS should laser focus on a console akin to the 360, great hardware and excellent software/games to support it. The second half seems to be MS's problem since the 360.

My hopefully scandal from BARB seems to have come to nothing. Shame. As said above, they ain't got long left, and if there was unprovoked corporate sabotage, we'll probably never see the proof at this stage. Could have been a juicy story to be turned into a Netflix movie. Appears to not be the case.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 55,024 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

If you thought BARB was the subject of sabotage and not the delusions of a sociopathic narcissistic owner then you need to stop being so naive. All you have to do is ask yourself why anyone would bother to do what he was alleging and on this case the answer is nobody. There is no gain to be had from any amount of time and monetary investment into that kind of sabotage. He's just a nutcase.

In good AI news, publishers are finally moving against AI corporations with class action lawsuits over copyright infringement. Some massive names are on board taking Zukerburg to court for copyright infringement. Could take months but will be a big win and I don't see any legal defence for what they did.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 37,848 ✭✭✭✭Penn

I figured that at best, he might be able to demonstrate there was an employee who may have sent messages to someone outside BARB saying how the game is buggy, they're releasing too early… something like that. But even that wouldn't constitute any sort of sabotage on the scale he's trying to claim, and would still ultimately be a pathetic excuse for the condition the game launched in.

As expected, he's just looking for a scapegoat rather than admit what went wrong.

IMHO that studio who burned through 100+ mils (500 according to some) is to blame from top to bottom. The suits at the top form not seeing what's happening, and the devs for making such a **** generic mediocre slop.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 55,024 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

It's never the devs fault. No dev sets out to make a bad game. For these big triple A games the people involved are very talented. It always comes down to mismanagement from the top.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,636 ✭✭✭Cordell

No dev sets out to make a bad game

Of course not. But some aren't capable of doing a good one. I really doubt that just one man could derail a big project so much, so the responsibility is split between him, team leads and devs. In the end, the game wasn't made by one person.

Mina the Hollower from Yacht Club Games finally has a release date.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 55,024 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Nah, it really is down to upper management. You ain't getting on a game dev team without being talented, game development and bank security are the two toughest programming gigs and there's a reason that banks head hunt game devs.

A bad game is always down to bad game design from a lead, a lot of time a stubborn one that won't listen to ideas from the dev team, and bad management lead to avoidable time delays and rush.

I imagine Mindseye had both on a massive level.

Game devs are there to do the grunt work. The leads and producer are there to make sure that game is fun and ready on time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 37,848 ✭✭✭✭Penn

But then it also has to be considered that even the most competent and experienced of devs may produce slop if not given the proper time and resources to do their job, or are given unrealistic objectives, or constantly changing objectives from higher-ups. And it's ultimately the higher-ups who review the works completed and can give it the yay or nay, and push it out to release.

From the leaks about MindsEye's development both before and after its release it seems like a lot of development was an absolute sh*tshow and the failures for that came largely from management, and management are trying to pass the blame onto external factors to avoid taking any share of the blame themselves.

Surprise Starfox Direct happening currently. Remake of N64 game apparently and out June 25th. Surely not full price.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 11,435 Mod ✭✭✭✭CatInABox

It's Nintendo. They charge full price for almost everything….

Valve going down the reservations route from tomorrow

Steam Controller: Reservations open May 8th

How to reserve yours, and what we're doing to mitigate the challenges from earlier in the week

Steam Controller launched on May 4th, and while we were happy to see such a high level of interest, the experience for a lot of you trying to buy it was incredibly frustrating. We plan to continue replenishing stock as we get more in, but in the meantime wanted to share changes we're making to improve the purchase experience and to limit reseller activity:

Beginning May 8th at 10 am Pacific, we're opening a reservation queue for Steam Controller. Once you reserve, your place in line will be saved. When we go back in stock, order emails will be sent in the same order that reservations were made.

Here are the details on how we're hoping to improve the experience overall while also taking steps to limit reseller activity:

    Reservation details:

Reservations will be limited to one Steam Controller per user.

Once you receive an order email, you have three days (72 hours) to make your purchase on Steam.

For now, customers who have already purchased a Steam Controller are not yet eligible to reserve another Steam Controller.

    Additionally:

Your account must be in good standing on Steam

You must have made a purchase on Steam prior to April 27, 2026

Replenishment of inventory will vary from region to region. We will start fulfilling reservations next week in the US / Canada, and UK / EU / AU in the following weeks.

Switch 2 price increase from September 1st.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,095 ✭✭✭✭Potential-Monke

Me owning a Switch is getting further and further away! Ram prices driving this allegedly. Crazy times. AI needs to die and soon. Nvidia CEO saying AI is more expensive than humans right now...

Also, cannot get a physical copy of Pragmata. Smyths sold out in all stores (except Claremorris, which is too far from Limerick) and online, Amazon not delivering until June....

"Due to rising costs, including increased material prices, Nintendo will revise the MSRP of the following playing cards and Hanafuda/Kabufuda cards in order to ensure the continued availability of these products." Revised from 2,750 yen to a vague 'open price'.

Glad I grabbed my Mario hanafuda cards when I did. Not a joke - one of the few non-video game Nintendo objects I own lol!
