For anyone thinking of applying - don't leave it til the last minute thinking it's the same as last time. There's are questions that require a bit more thought this time out…

Time flies, it doesnt feel that long since I applied last time.

    Best of luck all.

    What's the salary like?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,178 ✭✭✭antimatterx

40K. It would take me over a decade to get back to where I am now. I was interested but no thanks.

Best of luck to all applying. the pay scale is a bit misleading. yes that will be the starting salary but about 2-3 years in you'd go on a posting abroad for a few years which is a whole different ball game financially.

Any new or former Third Secs want to share their experience from application to job start?

Your obs on the selection process, how long you spent in Iveagh before a posting, how long at home between postings etc

    Pay scales are not misleading

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13 UnderHeaven

Not a bad idea, here’s a little bit about my experience.

I applied in August, tested in September/October and did the précis in December, as far as I remember. Then waited until June/July for an interview, had to move country so started in September.

No obs on selection process other than I was helping with the shortlisting for another competition at intern level and was blown away by the calibre of applicants. The average time in HQ is 2 years, this was the same for me but with a temporary posting during this time. Time home between depends on what you want and is usually around 2 years.

Pay scales do not adequately reflect remuneration, as mentioned above. While on posting you will receive allowances which can offset many of the added costs of living abroad. I imagine people could save money from them too.

The job itself is not for everyone, especially on posting. You have a very high level of responsibility and can be dealing with consular emergencies, challenging environments, high level visits at ministerial/ presidential state visit level, very busy development programmes, negotiations etc.

Saying that it Can be very rewarding.

According to some current Third Secs, the application numbers last time in 2024 was 1611 with an approx. intake of 60, making the intake percentage 3.7%ish.

Hopefully the testing platform this year won't be crazy different to ones used before!

    "No obs on selection process" - you're a real DFAT'er now! :>

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,654 ✭✭✭SHOVELLER

Pay scales are exactly that. Allowances while working abroad would never be factored in as you won’t always be away.

Interesting headline yesterday that nearly one-third of public sector job candidates fail to show for interview or assessment

I read that article and the headline is misleading.

The first line states "Nearly a third of candidates invited to interview or an online assessment for jobs in the public sector did not show up or withdrew from the process"

I'm technically on 3 different panels at the moment, for each I've passed the interview, for another two I will almost certainly be interviewed in the next few months. For the general AO competition, I have an outside shot of getting there. To be blunt, I'd take a 3rd Sec role over all 6 of these positions, meaning I'd be 5/6 of the 30,000 described in the headline.

With the speed of CS hiring, I don't think it's an especially fair way of describing it.

You’ll find that sub-editors routinely do this with headlines.

Sadly in the recruitment game no shows is not unusual. It’s the nature of the beast but I’m old school and think it’s disrespectful as they don’t recognise the work it takes to put them in that position.

I have often felt its how long the compeititons drag on for that effects the numbers, I understand Publicjobs don't want to be running annual competitions but I feel the attrition rate might be lower if the comps were more frequent but the panels shorter.

I have a feeling this year there will be somewhat fewer applicants due to a more muted advertising campaign.

2024 had them advertising heavily on the Indo and online. Not to mention it came out earlier than last time. This year, even as an active AO who keeps an eye on this competition, it took me a day or two to notice it was even up!

Anyone else get an invitation to the Stage 1 on-line assessment? Wondering did everyone get through or was there a shortlisting or something.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 334 ✭✭Mister R

I think it’s often the case everyone gets the link to the testing provided they submitted a complete application

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26 Firstnamebunchofnumbers

Everyone who submits an application gets an invite to stage 1 assessments. It's not indicative of the quality of the application submitted. Ditto stage 2 if you progress that far.

hiya! Do any former third secretaries have tips for the situational judgement assessment and how the department would like us to respond? Thanks :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7 JoeCalone2001

Simiar to kitkat77's post, does anyone have any tips for the Situational Judgement part, or resources you found helped in the past?

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 4,720 Mod ✭✭✭✭dory

It's really hard to give tips on it - other than use your better judgement. It's things like - Mary is off sick but she's the only person who knows about X, should you ring her? Or - you don't have all the information but you have a deadline - be late or have half the information in your brief? There's no completely right or wrong answer so there's no book you can read on it. It's just from experience you know what you should do (which obv sometimes differs from what happens in reality). Best of luck.

Thanks Dory - presuming in these cases - it's appropriate to call her if it's something really important? Second one, as for an extension and explain the situation?

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 4,720 Mod ✭✭✭✭dory

Honestly have no idea. In real life you wouldn't ring someone who's off sick. Unless it was absolutely life or death. I can't see how it'd be the correct answer in one of these with the Right to disconnect etc. For the other , yeah probably ask for an extension. I came i the top 1/3 last I did one of these, but they never tell you which ones you got right or wrong so I've no idea really.

Do we get no emails to say we completed it? I know you’ve to mark it as completed but still never got anything.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30 MarloStanfield

It would appear not - but, you can see you have completed it both through the test window url and where you have it marked on publicjobs. Perhaps we can expect an email when the testing window is closed. Hopefully they are quick with the results and turnaround to the next stage. Everything feels a little expedited this time compared with last time around.

Some of those numerical reasoning ones were deadly and that test took me a lot longer than 15 mins.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5 leeksconjunction

it took me 40 minutes 🙃 I had to guess at least 2 of the answers

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7 JoeCalone2001

If you look on Reddit, similar outlook on the numerical reasoning. It seemed way harder than any of the practice tests I could find.

Does anyone know when we'll be hearing about results?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26 Firstnamebunchofnumbers

Probably in another week or two, if memory serves from previous applications

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 114 ✭✭agoodusername

My guess would be by the end of next week, so the 12th, based on going through these hoops a couple of times before.

With 100+ temporary EU policy officers, I think that the required standard at interview will be particularly high.

I wasn't a fan of not being able to go back to previous questions in the assessments, other than that it wasn't anything I hadn't seen before.
