Peter Kay 3 Arena April 2026

Couldn't see any mention of this so I am taking the liberty of starting a new thread.

I was not a huge devotee of Peter Kay, unlike many people I know who swear he's the funniest comedian to come out of Britain in recent years. But i have seen some social media clips of his live show which I enjoyed and so was looking forward to his show at the 3 Arena last night (Friday April 17).

To say it was a disappointment was an understatement. He came on and said "I don't have a show planned." The next two hours proved the veracity of that statement!

The first 30 minutes or so were spent in leading the audience in singalongs of advertising jingles and TV theme tunes from the 1970s and 80s. After the first two or three, I thought "This guy is taking the piss!" Those of us old enough to remember the 1970s and 80s may be nostalgic for some things from that time but the jingles to ads for Club Milk biscuits, Cadbury's Fudge Bars and Mild Green Fairy Liquid are not some of them. It wasn't long before I thought I was in an episode of Better Call Saul with the creepy ambulance-chasing lawyer inveigling his way into the confidence of a room full of gullible elderly residents by providing a tawdry and talentless entertainment show because "old folk don't know any better and they'll like me for spending some time with them." Except we weren't old folks in a nursing home glad for any entertainment we can get; we were paying punters at a sell-out crowd in Dublin's premier live venue and had payed handsomely for the privilege of being there.

Kay's reputation is as one of a homely empathetic comedian fondly reminiscing, and finding great humour in, childhood memories of growing up in a Lancashire-Irish community. Not any more. The second half of the show saw him descending into puerile blue jokes of the sort prized by adolescent boys. I hadn't heard the gag about the new plumber's sex position (Somebody stays in all day but nobody comes) and sadly that was perhaps the second most entertaining moment of the night. The most entertaining was when a fight broke out among some audience members while Kay was contorting himself onstage in the middle of a monologue and he had to retain that position (I believe the show was being filmed) while the lights came on and security had to evict the miscreants.

His encore finale then provided an explanation for his earlier obsession with jingles. Here was a reprise of all the favourites from Act 1 only this time as mashups with some 80s rock classics as the backing tracks. Dire Straits or the Clash providing a thumping accompaniment to ads for chocolate bars and biscuits while Kay plays "air guitar" with a garden fork was loud, overblown, bombastic…in fact everything but funny.

The clearest rock 'n roll allusion to all this that I can think of is Johnny Rotten's sneer to the audience during the Great Rock and Roll Swindle movie: "Ever get the feeling you've been 'ad?"

Not since Bernard Manning slipped off this mortal coil has a Northern English comedian so shamelessly taken the piss out of so many Irish people. I suppose he feels he was worth it.

Maybe there were other people there who enjoyed it? Each to their own.

I was at this on Saturday night and agree that it was very very poor. I am a fan of his work, but 40 mins of singalong to ad jingles was a terrible performance. The middle part was sub standard standup, and then the finale? Don't get me started, he could have given half as much thought into the actual content of the show as he did for that ridiculous firework / crappy backdrop / theatrical mashup

I went on a free ticket and still feel like I've been ripped off.

That's disappointing. I'm sure I saw a documentary a couple of years ago how Peter Kay tested out his material on small audiences first before bringing it to much larger ones.

On the other hand perhaps the material just didn't work as well here as the north of England.

Reviews of the tour are very mixed on TrustPilot (3.3 stars).

I saw him in ‘23 and was disappointed, a lot of his material is aimed at English fans and didn’t translate well.

I don't think it's to do with English fans, He was singing theme tunes to ads and shows we all know, it's just that i can't believe that's considered presentable as a comedy act, standing there having people sing along jingles to 80s and 90s telly ads. Absolute muck.

And then the big finale (i wont spoilt it since he asked us not to) was also piss poor and just more of the same.

It was the exact same muck when he played here in 2011. Gave up on him after that.

Sounds more like an act you'd see on a British cruise ship.

Was at that too and really thought he was terrible! That thing where he sings along to songs and saying they sound like something else as if it is hilarious is absolutely atrocious and not one bit funny!

Worse - it was like being on a coach trip, all we were missing was the whip around for the driver

Crikey. Glad i didn't pull the trigger on these tickets, but reading the reviews here it doesnt surprise me. As a comedian, I think he peaked early and struggled after that.

But dont let this take away from the genius that is Phoenix Nights

Ah christ he was dire. I was actually getting annoyed sitting there listening to everyone entertain the jingles and singing along with him. I thought it would go on for 10 mins, but it was nearly 45 mins. And then he kept on dipping in and out of it for the rest of the show. The big finale at the end seemed completely catered towards a UK crowd with all the union jacks and "celebrity" cameos and his extended bit about meeting royalty (Who the **** wants to know about that in Ireland?)

Twice the price of most comedy shows and it was absolute shite.

saw some of the recent PK live stuff on YouTube. He basically just seems like a guy out of ideas…. Which is maybe forgivable in a sense as he’s been doing standup for 30 years now…hence all the padding / gimmicks, big screens and singalong nonsense…

Was a massive fan of him throughout his career, loved his stand up, phoenix nights/ car share etc.

Went to the show a couple of years back in the 3 arena and he was absolutely awful, sounds like nothing new has come.

I wouldnt go to see him live again.

He only did two stand up tours prior to this one. By the second one people were commenting how he had no material.

equivalent to a band who had one good Album and still touring it 20 years later.

Long time fan of his and loved all the tv stuff and the early stand up shows, but went to his show last year in Dublin (with really high hopes) and, yeah, wouldn't be bothered seeing him live again. A lot of rehashed material and jokes that didn't really land for an Irish audience.

I listened to his second audio book on Spotify recently and that was a magical mystery tour of bizarre rambling that ran out of steam really, really quickly. He's great with a team of script writers and hopefully he#ll go back to tv work at some point.

If you grew up in the 70s and 80s with the BBC and UTV then yes you’d get the “jokes” - but these are old jokes- like nearly decades old now- and of course if you’re not in your late 40s onwards, and to boot, just had RTÉ to keep you entertained, you just wouldn’t have got the jokes in the first place.
His reviews since his “comeback” range from pretty mediocre if you’re being kind to the sort of experience you had OP.

His one trick pony has sort of had its day many moons ago. I did think he was funny once upon a time- but it sort of wore off on me then. Whereas Billy Connolly, until he had his illness, remained so fresh on stage for decades.

You can’t rehash shows in a social media age- it just doesn’t work - and especially not where the same fans attend- they are entitled to new and indeed, funny material

For those who were at the show…any hecklers voicing their disapproval? Or was it the usual Irish "don't complain till we're in the pub afterwards."

This thread has just popped up on home page, so I said I'd reply.

I was first handed Peters DVD "Peter Kay: Live at the Bolton Albert Halls" back in 2003, by a Mancunian work mate and I instantly fell in love with his comedy. Over the years - he's written some incredible TV shows (Phoenix Nights, Max and Paddy, Car Share), done spoof of Xfactor (Britain's Got the Pop Factor... and Possibly a New Celebrity Jesus Christ Soapstar Superstar Strictly on Ice), had hit singles, and put on some GREAT, GREAT shows (his early DVDs).

But this recent "reincarnation" of his comedy - is - TERRIBLE.

His material was "of it's time" and what ye seem to have been subjected to, is a stale, lazy, watered down version of what used to make him great. He's clearly had personal/family issues over the past 10 years - and it's affected his material, his performances and his approach to his work. His whole persona is… gone.

In the way a former premier league footballer or champion boxer (Think Rooney or Prince Naseem) would just look ridiculous if they stepped back onto/into a pitch/the ring today - the same is true of Peter Kay. Except, instead of piling on the weight after retirement (like the above two), Peter has lost his very own "14 stone in a day"…

And with it, he lost a lot of what made him funny…

He was young. Sure, he was overweight… but he was FULL of life, confidence and CHRIST, he was funny.

I once bumped into him oustide a B&Q in Limerick (he has a holiday home in nearby Kilaloe). This was when he was off he grid. No one recognised him. I badly wanted to go up to him and just say hello… but I thought… what if he's not "that guy" from the DVDs?

    So I let him be.

Maybe he should've done the same.

Very strange- on the plus side, the audience only had to endure 40 mins of his act.

“Comedian Peter Kay was rushed off stage mid-performance and the audience at his Birmingham show was evacuated after a suspicious bag was found.

A 19-year-old man is being held and the area was searched as a precaution on Friday night.”

He lived just outside killaloe full time for nearly a decade and sold up almost a decade ago to return home when a family member became quite ill.

He never ventured into killaloe preferred to live like a hermit on his land, anyone i know who spotted him seems to have been in the b&q or Halfords in limerick or other british stores, quite an odd guy by all accounts but had a spark of funny about him for maybe 7 to 10 years and then that seemed to just be gone overnight and he turned into an awful 70/80s holiday resort kinda act

I think something happened him all those years ago when he cancelled all the shows and withdrew from public life until a few years ago- something that impacted his ability to be instantly funny and creative.
He’s doing a painting by numbers approach to his shows given the reviews and the comments here. Something isn’t “right” with him

We went to see him in the 3 Arena last year and it wasn't great, wasn't terrible either, shrug

I don't think he'll ever be as good as he was years ago but we weren't expecting that tbh. The old TV ads thing did go on a bit too long. I can imagine how baffling most of that would be for our former one/two channel sufferers 😀

    I'm partial to your abracadabra
I'm raptured by the joy of it all

Still love Phoenix Nights and Max & Paddy
