God only knows. It seems stations are been added on a daily basis if not on an hourly basis. Surprised they haven't been added from launch. It going to be a wait and see game.

I would say yes that news talk and Today FM will join the dab+ muxs 1 and 2 but it’s a wait and see game

the staggered additions are due to an issue with the multiplexer apparently

I was very impressed with the coverage of the new multiplex around Millstreet and Macroom yesterday. In areas where FM is challenging due to multipath and terrain the DAB mux was clear with few dropouts

I was even more impressed when I learned that Nowen Hill was not on air yet and will likely cover the afforementioned black spots

Nova is a great editor to mux 1

It’s going to challenge my q102 listening

Mux 1 dies just north of Gorey on the M11

As of today how many and what channels are on mux 2 for my drive to Cork and Kerry later in the week?

DAB handles multipath way better . I was in Toormakeady yesterday and was comparing GHR on mux2 to Midwest, Midwest was dropping to mono with multipath while DAB was fine. Goes to show

there’s a great video from the original eureka 147 team on that actually

    Digital is like that

You either have it or you don’t

No fade it just drops out completely below a threshold

So it’s signal strength resilience that’s winning really ie once there’s enough to decode you get the same quality as if you were beside the tx

Analog on the other hand, hiss, volume drop and gradually gone as you drop signal strength due to terrain or distance

You can get a perfect digital decode on a much weaker signal that if it were analog would just be hissy

    Same applies to tv signals

of course, same with everything digital . Yesterday ballinrobe town it jumped like a CD and gone completely in some bits which was weird. Should be well covered

was Keeper Hill helping reception in pockets around there? In areas where 7A may have been poor

Hard to tell. They have vast FM coverage across the country so no need for them to fork out the extra cost, at the same time they're both on Mux 1 so who knows?

Location of CUs changed last night from the looks of it. We can then speculate at least 1 more Onic station will be on.

Can they tell their listenership like with the jnlr for FM radio

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 76,149 ✭✭✭✭L1011

Logos are a luxury those of us with Android Automotive cars will never get!

Stations can pay to go on JNLR. I don't believe any of the DAB stations have.

How they handle surveys showing listeners to existing JNLR member FM stations available beyond their FM licence range, I don't know.

It would be a huge surprise if Newstalk and Today FM were not on Mux2

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 76,149 ✭✭✭✭L1011

It's completely pointless for them to be, though. I have always assumed they were placeholders on mux1, awaiting some other Bauer service to get spun up.

This isn't 1997, DAB does not replace FM.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,210 ✭✭✭Infoanon

1997 thinking is still alive and well unfortunately.... ,1967 thinking might be more apt.....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,123 ✭✭✭pureza

    Nice one

Looks like they’re adding everything gradually that’s on mux1

    Keep us posted

I struggle to see how DAB will succeed here on a full time basis. In the UK it's different, huge population compared to here, so plenty scope for niche DAB only stations, you have major national stations like Talksport and BBC Five Live who were MW only, so DAB was a no brainer for them, BBC R4 extra, other BBC extra services on DAB only like Five Live Extra, I could go on, it's a totally different market to us. I'd love to see DAB succeed here, but I cannot see it as a commercially viable extra option for most stations who some are just about surviving on FM, never mind adding the extra cost of being on DAB as well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,210 ✭✭✭Infoanon

They used to say the same about FM.....it was Nova specifically who proved that wrong. Relevant as Nova was unregulated.

If the regulators meddle to much in DAB we will end up with a copy of the FM nationals. It didnt work in the past ,it wont work now.

If you put something on DAB that the listeners want they will tune in, with lower operating costs it allows eg Lazer,8Radio,Freedom to operate and in time with proper promotion of DAB these can be long term fuĺl time services.

Lower population also means lower costs, and fewer niches , but let the market decide that.

A FM station planning a long term strategy must take account of the potential of DAB ,for that reason alone DAB in Ireland has a future.

DAB also has an ace card - legally required receivers in cars.

Only CnaM can derail DAB in Ireland.

Dab offers extra choice for the listener and for those of us in rural areas who can only access the four or five main radio stations it’s great to get more variety. I never thought I’d be able to access Nova from my kitchen in Co Sligo via an aerial as opposed to WiFi.

I'm a big RTE Gold fan but I am really getting tired of the same long ad being played every time I connect (or even worse after a drop out). If there are momentary DAB+ drop outs in the car, there was one last night, the signal comes back with no ad. Major plus against wi-fi streaming. Liking the extra choice in the car and the ease of just scrolling through a list of channels.

That's really bad. The logos are sent via SPI . I wonder do Teslas not support it ?

My wife has a 2025 Skoda Kamiq and that doesn’t seem to do the logos either. We tried saving Today FM as a preset but the logo didn’t come in. It only did if we saved the preset while tuned to FM.
