Been criticising Arteta for a while now so credit where it is due, he got the tactics bang on today, Arsenal finally looked like a team who believe they can get over the line.

Controlled the game when they needed to and when they had the opportunity they turned and attacked with some speed and purpose. Took players and shots on, much more enjoyable to watch.

Great to see Gyokeres finally getting the service and he linked up well with Saka. He proved tonight when he gets the service he does the business.

Lewis Skelly was a breath of fresh air in midfield. He got stuck in from the first minute and didnt allow players time on the ball to turn, was chopping at their feet and letting them know they were in a game. Played great.

Best way to take the pressure off is keep scoring goals, not slowing games down to a crawl, today has to be the blueprint. We are far more dominant in games when we go on the offensive.

Perform like that in the remaining games its hard to see where we drop points. All the pressure back on city.

It is indeed difficult to see where points will be dropped. Palace look like they're as good as in the Conference League final so surely their focus will be on that rather than the final game of the season. That leaves Burnley at home and West Ham away. One already confirmed relegated and the other surely going down. WHU are very poor. They shouldn't be causing undue stress.

Another key factor in yesterday's excellent attacking display that's not getting highlighted is Odegaard's absence. I think he has to remain a sub at best for the rest of the season. We're absolutely toothless in attack when he's in the side. Looks like Arteta's hand was forced into dropping him with whatever injury he has now but hopefully Arteta can see how much better are without him. Number 1 on the chopping block for summer sales imo. Won't happen though.

Looking at villa tonight if it comes down to goal difference city will get what they need against them. They've been awful.

I don't want Spurs to go down as I said before because I love the NLD. However Villa did not play in the spirit of the game tonight and I feel for Forest and WHU as a result. If it was possible for the Leagur to take action against Villa i'd be happy. I saw somewhere that Arsenal were interested in getting Morgan Rogers in the summer but I wouldn't want him near the club. He's brutal.

Spurs will stay up as west ham are even worse. But that doesn't really concern me tbh, what does is that villa look capable of rolling over and in fact if it does come down to the final day can see a peru v Argentina situation.

Arsenal have to win all their games now and score more goals than City.

I didn't like what Villa did tonight because as I said it's not in the spirit of the game and let's the League down. Not much different to match fixing imo.

looked like Villa threw that knowing forest now have to try get a result tomorrow ahead of the 2nd leg against Villa. Hope forest get to the final now.

I read online that Emery made 7 changes today compared to the team that started in Europe last week.

Seems harsh on West Ham and Forest that Villa can do that without ramifications.

It's exactly what it is. What Villa did today was a f***ing disgrace. That team they put out and that performance was shambolic and nothing more than a f*** you to West Ham and Forest. You know what, I hope it backfires on them. Highly unlikely given they still have Burnley to play but I hope they somehow lose all their remaining games and miss out on CL

Hopefully Odegarrd doesn’t play again this season as he kills the team with his slow demanding the ball play, also Jesus showed is finished when he came on and can’t stay on side won’t press and ads nothing to the team, have been saying big Vic if gets the right ball quickly behind is going to score and helps the team with his movement.

Every hates us and always rolls over for Pep.

Will be no different on the final day.

Palace were no better against Bournemouth today, but, yet, no real outcry about it, yet, it could impact who gets into Europe, Palace will likely also do the same on the last day against Arsenal, will you be calling them out for that too!

Teams are entitled to do whatever benefits them the most, by losing Villa force Forest to play a full strength team tonight, which they hope will benefit them come Thursday, they might still get knocked out, but, it gives them a better chance of progressing as they got to rest players while forcing Forest not to rest theirs. It's up to West Ham and Forest to get themselves out of relegation, not rely on others for help. We're at that time of year where teams and certain players within teams have different agenda's and winning is not always necessarily the goal, that's why we see so many strange results this time of year. If it's any consolation to you, you can look forward to Palace rolling over for Arsenal on the last day of the season as their priority will likely be the Conference league final a few day later!

Throwing a game like that is never a good look though. There is a diff between resting players and what happened last night.

I hope Burnley do Villa next weekend and drag them into a top 5 battle.

We’re just pissed because Emery has form for this crap. At the tail end of the 23/24 season Villa played City at the start of April making 7 changes and rolling over 4-1 to City away. 2 weeks later away to Arsenal they go full strength and beat Arsenal away. He’s a miserable €¥#%. I think best case scenario is if Villa get knocked out of Europe by Forest and still have something to play for when they play City on the last day but all Arsenal can do is worry about their own games and hope that the pileup for City means they’ll drop points. The win against Fulham was encouraging but I still don’t expect this Arsenal team to outscore City if it comes to goal difference

another 2 goals would have made a massive difference against Fulham. Two 2-0 wins and City will have overturned it. But anyway, huge improvement and let’s hope it continues. 5 games away from immortality

Palace threw the game against Bournemouth and will likely do the same against ye on the last day, it's understandable why, as they have other priorities, yet, I don't really see anyone complaining about Palace. Teams have and will continue to do what Villa did yesterday and it generally gets forgotten about. If Villa get drawn into a top 5 battle, it likely means Bournemouth (who benefitted yesterday) have taken points off City.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,941 ✭✭✭ronjo

I disagree Palace threw the game. They rested players yes but its not the same as not giving a toss which is why I believe so many Villa fans arent happy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,768 ✭✭✭Girly Gal

They didn't play their best team, so they didn't give their best effort, did you see their 1st half performance, it was shocking as bad as Villa, the only differences were that Palace were away, so no home fans to show their frustration plus it doesn't directly involve relegation teams, I also think the fact that it was Spurs who benefitted has blown this out of proportion, as a lot are hoping Spurs get relegated to revel in their humiliation, West Ham getting relegated isn't as big a deal, as we've all seen that before, so people are pissed at Villa for giving them a life line.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,941 ✭✭✭ronjo

Ok I hadnt realised Palace didnt try either. Yes, if thats true thats shocking also.

I want Villa to go through v Forest because it gives incentive to Brentford and Bournemouth to finish sixth and try to get something from the City game.

I reckon both would be interested in 6th or 7th anyway as it would give Europa or Conference league qualification.

It is the responsibility of every player who is selected to play for any team to give his best. That is regardless of if he is a first team player or not. He is well paid and is representing his club and their fans. Last night Villa players did not try a yard. It was obvious from the first whistle. Their fans saw it early and many left even before the 20 minute mark. It was a terrible advert for the Premier League. A disgusting performance from manager and players. It let down the EPL and it let down football but it let down Villa even more.

Any team seen to not be trying to contest a match should be punished and the EPL should act now.

I am on record of not wanting Spurs relegated because I love the NLD. It is really nothing to do with them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,941 ✭✭✭ronjo

Yes agreed… the 3 clubs City have to play coming up would all be delighted with a run in Europe next year (Everton included).

Europa league is easier to win now without the drop down from Champions league and whichever English side qualifies for Conference probably becomes the favourite in the competetion.

Because clubs are on the beach, rotating heavily towards the end of the season for various reasons. Im not in favour of GD determining positions. Think a fairer system is head to head, as its in teams control then. I do realise we have lost the head to head to Man City this season, so would lose out there. Its a fairer way of doing it though.

I do think either us or Man City will slip up though, so cant see it going down to goal difference.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,768 ✭✭✭Girly Gal

I agree, players should give their best effort regardless of who they are playing, they shouldn't need any carrot like European football to raise their game, but, we see it all the time, especially this time of the season, teams just going through the motions, it's so common there's even a phrase for it "on the beach", Villa aren't the first and definitely won't be the last to not give their best effort, sometimes you benefit from it and sometimes it costs you, but, there's very little you can do about it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,758 ✭✭✭G1032

I didn't see the Palace game but the data from it seems to contradict your assertion that Palace didn't try.

    0.9 xG v Villa's 0.3

    0.81 xG open play v Villa's 0.1

    21 touches in opposition box v Villa's 9

Whatever team Palace put out on the field, it does at least seem they tried. Villa fielding a severely weakened team who didn't try.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,768 ✭✭✭Girly Gal

You didn't see the game, data can't really show if a team tried much or not, also Villa did score, Palace didn't, Villa lost by 1 goal, Palace by 3, of course the score doesn't tell the whole story, neither does the stats you supplied, stats without context can't tell the story of a football match.
