One problem that is easy to solve, is to not play players out of position.

Problem not easy to solve is goals

In theory Isak gets 25 a season in PL

Replacing Salah. I'd go for Maghnes Akliouche, the will and potential is there, comfortable on both feet, he could make that RW his own

I find some of the noises coming from Joyce etc interesting. I know FSG have given Slot their backing but I'm really really hoping they are planning to get someone else in this summer. We're in serious danger of falling into obscurity much like United did for the past x number of years. This is looking very like Ten Haag 2.0.

We've all talked this to death but the bottom line is this team is broken and the only realistic thing we can do is try get some re-enforcements in this summer and change the coaching ticket.

I've no faith in Slot being able to turn this around. His passive managerial style has turned us into a one legged stool. We don't do anything well and done seem to have any specific plan apart from slow pedestrian passing. There's been lots of mitigations (Jota/injuries/new players) but it just hasn't been good enough from Slot and his management team. We're slow, unfit, none of the team seem on the same page apart from flashes from Wirtz/Hugo. We've fallen into 4th through the pure madness of this season but we're a poor team right now.

Slot needs to go in the summer or else he'll be sacked in October/November when this slide inevitably continues. We need to rip the plaster off now at the end of the season, thank him for his service and go for a Alonso/Enrique level appointment. The rebuilt can then truly start. To quote Ken Early FSG are beginning to look like an absentee landlord, only interested in the champions League money.

James Pearce was pretty damning in the athletic this morning also.

I'm very much of the opinion we should change the coach based on the last few months of performances. The mitigation only goes so far. There have been no signs that things will get better next season and plenty of signs they'll get worse.

Yesterday was the last straw for me.

The noise has definitely changed. Aldridge, Pearce, Joyce were up to a few short weeks ago talking about Slot being safe. Nothing to see here. We were on the edge of a demolition in the first half yesterday and suddenly the Slot advocates have seen the light.

We are by no means guaranteed that CL spot but the club has ignored the warnings for most this year. Now the real possibility of loosing a wad of CL cash has woken them up.

As was said above there is a whiff of Ten Hag 2.0 about this and I believe not wanting to loose face by acknowledging the mistakes made by the hierarchy.

Maybe they think an interim wouldn't improve things so have decided to stick with Slot until the end of the season before they part ways with him.

Owners who just want Champions League money will do the minimum to achieve that.

Winning the league and then going out and breaking the British transfer record twice doesn't strike me as owners content to just get the CL money.

For me I think the more likely situation is that the owners had a 3 year plan with Edward, Hughes and the manager those 2 will choose to bring in - Slot, with the idea of evolving the team away from the Klopp era

I believe the plan was that after 3 seasons of this new structure, all the senior players (CL winners) are gone: Alisson, van Dijk, Trent, Gomez, Robbo, Salah

But I think the plan along the way was clearly to try to invest in players who could get to the same level. That's why we saw the outlay last summer with likely another 4ish signings this summer. Had we not won the league last season I think the plan would have been the same because they've invested in a 3 year transition.

Individually I still don't think any of the signings we made were lacking ambition. Not getting Guéhi and the Isak saga meaning he doesn't get a full preseason definitely both hurt us a lot this season but I think some pain was inevitable given the players leaving and the amount coming in.

The hope has to be though that the pain is confined to this season and not more spread out.

The uncomfortable truth is that this time next year we are likely saying goodbye to the last player at the club who won the CL in 2019

Was bleak enough yesterday until the mad fews minutes where we scored.

    Enjoyable spectacle for the neutral.

I'm not too sore about the handball cos it didn't cjange anything but that Bruno challenge not being sent for review feels very inconsistent.

    Where does this leave us?

I honestly don't know if its worth keeping Slot cos I see no partial parts of the puzzle in place.

Yesterday's press conference was the most animated and angry I've seen Slot in all his time at the club. Maybe he is under pressure of losing his job after all. Let's hope FSG see the light.

With 3 games to go we've conceded more goals this season than in any since 1993. That's with our CB duo of VVD and Konate being fit for the entire season too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,065 ✭✭✭✭noodler

Konate was missing quite a number of games.

RB has rotated about 6 times, Kerkez is besding in and we rarely have first choice keeper fit.

I'm more of the view that any CL qualification will have been gained thanks to the performances of VVD and despite being absolutely flogged.

Ibou's started 33 of our 35 league games this season, it's the fittest he's ever been.

I'm not saying the CBs are at fault for it all, I've not understood much of the criticism levelled at VVD in particular this season. I'm saying we're struggling to defend even with our best CB pairing starting constantly, bad sign.

We've now dropped more points in our final 10 games of this season (of which we've only played 7) than in the final 10 games of 20/21 and 22/23 combined (which are the seasons everyone cites as "Klopp's worst")

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,065 ✭✭✭✭noodler

    Fair on Konate, felt longer.

I'd be more of the mindset that having the aforementioned qualifications in other position explain how we can have conceded so many.

Slot thinks we were better than Utd.

It's like he truly believes that being neat and tidy when in possession is the key indicator as to whether you're the better team.

    He's insane.

The underbelly of this team is soft. It can't or doesn't want to run. It's easy to get at the back 4. It can't defend its box on set pieces properly.

For all of Slot's slow and (allegedly) controlling tactics, I was sure that he was conserving energy for the second half of the season and run in. Turns out, he was working on a way to break the first law of thermodynamics. The team seems to have reserved all that energy to play even slower, more ponderous and lethargic football than before and sap all the energy from anyone unfortunate enough to be watching. Where did all the energy go?

I have been supporting the Pool since 1978 and I have never been so depressed the next day after a match.

I think it might be the whole Isak situation - the big saga - the injuries - its a disaster.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 14,638 ✭✭✭✭machiavellianme

Really? I feel almost nothing. This season just stole any emotion that I had. Normally I'd be fuming for a few days after a defeat. Now I just shrug. Another season of this and I'd probably stop watching - the same way I did with UCD in 2023.

I'm getting too old to put myself out for a team with no fight. In fact, I'd sooner support Hodgson's version of Liverpool than this. They were battered because they were poor players but they gave it all. These are players who have it all but play poorly.

I like Josh Williams as an analyst, he is fairly level headed and has a good take on most things imo:

Slot is responsible for lots of things. If you want him sacked, cool. If you think he’s Liverpool’s biggest problem, cool. If you think he’s the main reason we’re in this mess, cool.

But purely when it comes to Sunday’s performance in isolation, I can’t help thinking that it looked like another case of the head chef struggling without key ingredients. Whether that’s good enough remains open for debate.

We can’t just group every single bad result under the same cheap umbrella. We need to understand the why behind each and every setback. Pay close attention to dangerous recurring themes, of course. But there’s a big difference between getting tactically outclassed, and being tactically handcuffed.

Three matches to go. Get me out of this place.

He's talking a fair bit of shite there imo.

Prefer it when he is doing the stats bits.

United beat us in very much the same way under a different manager while we played a very different set of players earlier this season, wouldn't be attributing the loss to any sort of unique and specific circumstances.

    Chelsea losing again.

Can't catch us unless they score three.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,795 ✭✭✭✭Fitz*

We've been so crap this season that they'll probably rock up to Anfield next weekend and beat us. Which will do nothing for either team really in the grand scheme of things.

Players & manager won't care though as long as they don't miss their flight for the next mid week holiday.

5 goals and 3 assists in the league. There's 5 Liverpool players ahead of him Salah, Szob, Gakpo, Ekitike and Macca

    Not great imo…
