So first up is Business post and there news that RTÉ are employing a Change Manager from London to review their cost-cutting measures.

An RTÉ spokesman said Whipple was brought in to review “operational models and efficiencies across the organisation”, including its news division, as part of its five-year strategy. The review, which kicked off this week, and will last 40 days will “look at how RTÉ is structured and resourced, and identify opportunities to improve workflows, resource allocation and multiplatform delivery”.

Good value for money I'd say! Again here are 12 well-paid executives on the Leardership team of RTÉ. Why the need for this "expert".

    ______

In the end they were just greedy, they all knew one another and knew what to expect more money for no return, it was a secure cash flow, but in fairness they looked for what they wanted and fair dues to them for that, and wouldn't you be doing the same!

Just one more thing .... when did they return that car

Its nothing new. Excerpts from a book Shane Ross has out about RTE "Saints Scholars and Scandals."

Saw the front page headline in the supermarket.

'Exclusive' extracts from Shane Ross' new book about the national broadcaster.

No doubt any juicy bits will be quoted elsewhere.

I preordered the book what must be 3 or 4 years ago now. My pre order eventually got cancelled. I thought it was never coming out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,145 ✭✭✭RoTelly

Looks like a timid version from the extracts. Will still be interesting to read.

Will be available on Thursday. I did see a pre-pubished copy, but didn't get to read it, I think there were legal issues. back then.

I am sure it is well watered down. Sean would have over 50 years of RTE stores from Ruth.

I think you may be misremembering that as more like 2 years (considering the scandal itself isn’t 3 years old just yet) but point taken in that it was certainly announced a long time ago…..

That said, RTÉ is the gift that can’t stop giving on this topic so no doubt that delayed things. There’ll likely be new chapters added even after this edition’s print run is finished given there’s likely more to come.

Yes, the salary is enormous, I understand that, but that doesn't affect my soul.

Is Dee back to full health yet?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 14,638 ✭✭✭✭machiavellianme

No she's dead. It's the only explanation that she hasn't been in front of a committee after nearly 3 years. Otherwise, she must be well enough to answer some questions by now?

How very dare you suggest she is not ill - both her doctor and legal team have confirmed separately she is too ill to face questioning from an Oireachtas Committee almost 3 years after the scandal broke. It clearly must be a very serious illness to last this long.

That this it seems now permanent illness fell upon her just a few short weeks after she was suspended from her role in RTÉ is of course just a coincidence, and to suggest otherwise is both unfounded and malicious. Just like it was a coincidence that completely out of nowhere The Toyman announced he was leaving his lucrative hosting gig of The Late Late Show 9 days after the deal struck between Noel Kelly and Forbes was discovered in an internal audit.

Forbes’ sole statement at the time states that many of the wider executive were aware of the deal, those members collectively all - coincidentally - agree that none of them knew anything about it. I’m sure those same executives would also collectively wish Ms. Forbes a speedy recovery so this matter could be cleared up and the record set straight…..

Spare a thought too for Jim Jennings who also coincidentally was struck down by a mystery illness and remains too ill to this day to testify. He was well enough to surface for at least one retirement drinks session last summer but unfortunately this was on a Friday evening and not when the Oireachtas were sitting. I’m sure however he will be in touch with them to offer his side of events as one would expect from someone so generously rewarded from the public purse for decades.

Tubridy got little credit for appearing so why would Forbes?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 14,638 ✭✭✭✭machiavellianme

Tubridy wasn't the Director General responsible for the day to day running of a publicly funded company. It's the minimum that one would expect of someone in that role.

Tubridy went to attempt to spin a narrative that he was the victim in the whole affair, when he was anything but. It backfired spectacularly for The Toyman in a deliciously ironic way. His failure to keep his mouth closed at times cost him reputationally at the hearing, and later that same summer his role in RTÉ - which btw would have been untenable pretty much anywhere else considering the revelations but bizarrely not in our state broadcaster.

Forbes was a salaried employee and not a contractor. She was also the DG. She was happy to take the perks of the role, but not any accountability for her (and I’m being generous here) failure to perform her duties and for the failings under her watch.

Tubridy got a lot of the blame, Forbes got an exit package. The country can expect all it likes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,135 ✭✭✭Peter Dragon

Do you think Dee Forbes hasn’t been blamed for her part in the affair?

Forbes resigned. What exit package did she receive? Please provide details of your claim.

It be fair I don't know if I'm alone in thinking but Tubs got a bit of respect from me for not weaseling away from the PAC.

He did "own it" to an extent.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 4,303 ✭✭✭Cyclingtourist

And from me as well but we're just individuals whereas all the media attention is on Tubridy rather than Forbes. Keeping your head down and refusing invites from Dáil committees seems to work.

On Dee Forbes she may not have received an 'exit package' as such but RTE still refuses to give a copy of her contract to the Oireachtas. She was appointed DG in 2016 (there were at least two other qualified candidates) on a reputed salary of €350,000 (excluding any pension provision) and was coming to the natural end of her 7 year term when she was forced to resign in June 2023. She pushed through the exit package of €400K given to Breda O'Keeffe (former finance director) despite it not meeting the requirement of a redundant position.

Tubridy got the push eventually because he refused to stick to the official RTE narrative by mentioning independent reports. If he'd remained largely silent like Forbes he'd more than likely still be in RTE.

The salary of D4bres and BK4 is €250K before pension prevision, it is about €320K after pension prevision and the car allowance. (See the annual reports).

from the 2022 annual report for D4bres

    image.png

AFAIK: She had gone on Annual leave as she was winding down in the role, indeed she had a going away do with a few people from RTÉ the Friday before the scandal broke, she was then suspended (I don't know if this was without pay, but I argue it was not, and I am fairly sure she possibly was paid until the end of her contract), but she received no compensation on her resignation that I am aware off, but happy to be proven wrong, but it that would just further cement my view that RTÉ is a failed organization.

Well you can accept RTE's reporting of payments to staff or maybe take them with caution.

The €350,000 director general role was Ms Forbes's first-ever job in Ireland. Up until her appointment in 2016, she spent her entire professional career abroad, first in advertising and then in TV.

Dee Forbes Made Outrageous Remarks Over Her €350k Pay Packet

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,145 ✭✭✭RoTelly

The pay packet includes her pension. but, as I say I take everything that RTÉ with a pinch of salt.

The same could be said of KB4 when he took on the role of Deputy DG back before D4rbes, indeed he'd no connection to Ireland.

I won't defend her appointment, and never did.

She didn’t get an exit package. Funny how you didn’t answer my question directly…I wonder why? 🙄

I have zero time for Forbes btw, but there’s no evidence of her receiving any package.

As for RTÉ not sharing her contract (which is different to an exit package) the govt. shouldn’t be giving them any public monies until items like these and other matters are answered to their satisfaction.

Having no connection to Ireland could be seen as an advantage. He had been with RTE since 2012 and before that held responsible positions in the BBC. Forbes was Irish but had never worked in Ireland. I think they’d have been better off giving him the DG job in 2016.

My cancelled pre-order has magically dispatched. A different cover from previously. Uncle Gaybo, Marian and Tubs featuring on the cover.

Why? Do you think he did a good job as Deputy DG, he left when he wasn't given the role of DG, if he felt he had something to give Irish broadcasting surely he should have stayed until the position was made available again, it was only a 7 year wait. IMO neither are suitable in the role that has nothing do with where they spent their careers or childhoods.

Wasn't he deputy for just 6 months?

    Don't blame the guy moving.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,145 ✭✭✭RoTelly

No, he was made Deputy DG by at least 2015, Please see notes from RTÉ ARs from 2015, 2014 and 2013, you can see the change in title as highlight, he left RTÉ in Oct 2016, so he was Deputy from at the very least some time in 2015 until his departure in October.

    image.png image.png image.png

But no it looks like he was made deputy some time in early 2014 https://www.independent.ie/regionals/herald/politicians-are-queueing-up-to-sue-rte/30131616.html?utm_source=chatgpt.com

    Thu 27 Mar 2014 at 15:30

RTE's head of news and deputy director general Kevin Bakhurst told the Oireachtas

So if we say Mid-March 2014 he was 2 years and half years as Deputy DG.

The prodigal son returns and its his former colleagues lining up to sue RTÉ if they don't get an exit package!

From today’s Indo. The Toyman really needs to make up his mind.

He spent two+ years name dropping and telling us how successful he was was playing senior hurling in London, then went on a coordinated “please take me back” campaign earlier this year, then told us over the last few weeks how much he was enjoying being his own boss and enjoying being free from the restraints of the formats of RTÉ and of course telling us how many wonderful jobs he has in London and Dublin and wherever the LMFM show is pre-recorded from …, now it seems he wants to come back to RTÉ again. The desperation is embarrassing tbh.

Have we times radio in Ireland? I couldnt possibly fathom the pathos of someone who would willingly subscribe to that, we already have it in spirit with radio 1 either way, as i see the english times in Oireland does all the hypework for radio 1, constantly interviewing and reviewing presenters

You can get it on the interweb.
Sunday afternoon is a bit of a graveyard time slot though. I have it one listen and it wasn’t exactly riveting so I haven’t been back.

Intriguingly however I haven’t been able to find a single review for the new show online - it’s like it and he almost don’t exist or matter in the eyes of the UK press.
