I understand Westmeath are out but can anyone explain the logic as to why they are out ? Has to a be a logical reason why.

Haha was going to post this, I can't find a straightforward explanation of the format anywhere, the Wikipedia page for this year's championship doesn't explain it.

    Two groups of three

KK, Dublin, and Laois in one group, Galway, Wexford, and Westmeath in the other

Rather than playing all the teams in your own group, you instead play the three teams in the other group

Points are then totted up and the top two in each group qualify for the SFs

Galway finished with 5, Wexford with 4, Westmeath with 4 (Wexford better score difference)

Dublin finished with 3, KK with 2, Laois with 0

Think it's Dublin vs KK and Galway vs Wexford in the SFs, could be mistaken on that count

Christ so Westmeath had more wins and points than all the teams in the entire other group, and they're out. Bonkers.

Hahahaha that's the stupidest format I've ever heard of.

Hypothetically EVERY team in one group could win ALL their matches and yet two of the teams from the other group would go through just based on having the least bad scoring difference in all those losses, and an undefeated team would get knocked out. Who on earth thought that up?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,361 ✭✭✭Martin567

    That's a ridiculous system.

Potentially all the teams in one group could finish on zero points. The two with the 'best' scoring difference would still make the semi finals.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 350 ✭✭hogans heroes

Same system has applied in kilkenny camogie club the last few years.not playing teams in your group mea ns you could top your group without winning a game. Example 2 groups of 3 ,one group wins all their matches against the other group.you could ein all 3 and finish last or loose all 3 znd finish too.has come close a couple of years in kilkenny senior camogie championship. Can't understand how the clubs haven't thrown it out.

Think there would've been very little between Kilkenny CBS, Kieran's, Good Counsel, and Enniscorthy CBS this year at Junior A level, that's probably a better indicator of what's to come at Minor than Senior A is given Minor is now U17, think Kieran's lost to Enniscorthy CBS and Good Counsel in the group stages and then lost to Kilkenny CBS by a point in the SFs, makes for a change at schools level because Kieran's are usually well ahead of the best Wexford schools

Even though Wexford were 8 points down early in the second half, I had thought it had been an even enough game up to that point, big difference was the double whammy of the black card & penalty for Wexford (Think they need to revisit this rule a bit like how they did with double jeopardy in soccer a few years ago), Wexford probably had scored as much from play as KK up to the 35-40 minute mark, KK probably won the sin-bin period by about 5 or 6 points which would've given them that lead, wasn't much in it otherwise

Speaking as a Wexfordman but I thought we had more scoring threats from play, KK backs were strong enough but thought the KK forwards were a bit reliant on Dowling, felt like KK didn't score much from play and did a good bit of scoring from placed balls instead, hit the world of wides, didn't help themselves by taking shots from silly angles out wide rather than looking to work the ball into better areas

Didn't notice Wexford having much of a size advantage, thought they looked about as big as each other, thought Wexford were an awful lot bigger than Laois last week but don't think we towered over KK, makes for a change because Wexford teams have at times been physically bullied by KK Minor/U20 teams in the not-too-distant past

I think the logic as follows (I don't agree with the logic but this is what they probably thought)….

Westmeath/Kildare/Offaly/Laois/Carlow/Antrim/Meath/Down all deserve the right to qualify for the Leinster Championship proper

Once in there, they deserve to be on an equal footing to the rest i.e. can't have a group of four with Galway, KK, Wexford, and Dublin and then another group of four with say the likes of Laois, Offaly, Westmeath, and Kildare, had it last year that the top two in the Big Four group went straight to the SFs and the bottom two went to the QFs where they played the top two from the qualifiers group

Didn't want eight teams as they thought there would be too many beatings

So if you have the qualifiers and want everyone on the same footing, that reduces the number of weeks you can run the Championship over

Am guessing they only had five weeks so they thought best case scenario was to have three weeks of group games, then SFs, and then the Final

Didn't want to have the teams playing the teams from the same group as that would only mean two games

Can guarantee three games by going criss-cross i.e. playing teams in the other group

Might have worked better had they started the qualifiers a week earlier and then used two groups of four like they did with U20

I don't think there is any world where that system is fair or sensible. Kilkenny are now in a semi final and as far as I know are guaranteed a place in the All Ireland series? So they could lose the semi final, and lose the next match against a Munster team and end up with a 20% win record from 5 games beating only Westmeath.
Westmeath lose a single game to Kilkenny and beat Dublin and Laois yet go out in group stage.
I know it's worked out well for us but that's just a ridiculous state of affairs.

What a game between kilkenny and Galway in the u16 all Ireland camogie final. I don't watch a lot of camogie but that's one of the best games you'll see this year. Kilkenny looked to have it won twice but Galway never gave up. The replay will be well worth seeing .

Won't name any names but some super players on the kilkenny team. Future looks bright with the u18 winning last week too

Also well done to mullinavat on winning their 8th senior football final in last 10 years. Amazing achievement considering the age profile of their team.

well the name is apt anyway. That explains it perfectly. But it still makes no sense if you know what I mean.

ye Chaz but he is switching things around and that is good like Mc Dermot and Lauhoff without weakening the team and giving Sweeney another run after being injured for a while.

The only positive is the amount of games each county gets in minor, particularly those seen as weakest. Hard not to feel for Westmeath all the same. Kilkenny weren't highly rated at the start of this championship and that is how it is turning out. They are a very hardworking honest team in the main. Thought well set up in 1st half v Wex particularly puckout wise. This changed completely second half when against wind. Wex half backs and midfield totally owned the ball and we were surviving on scraps. O'Neill, Corr and Walsh all tidy hurlers along with Bolger midfield but light and with Joe Dowling tied down more than in previous games we lacked real bite in front of goal. The backs are genuine all 6 with Paddy Grace a classy wing back. I think a good few of this team will do well going forward. More highly rated KK teams have struggled in Wexford Park. That is a very decent Wexford team and will give renewed hope to the county.

Jaysus Limerick are cruising, Clare are in big bother 11pms. Down. How wrong I was.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,039 ✭✭✭Nickindublin

Clare are awful Very surprised by them. Didnt know what way the game would go but they look like a team that were trained this morning and are out of wind and all over the place.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 701 ✭✭✭mullinr2

If you dont work as hard as Limerick do off the ball you are onto a hiding to nothing. Clare forwards just didnt work hard enough

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 659 ✭✭✭jamesbond2022

Another one sided game in Munster massive crowd but the game was over at half time

Limerick were awesome and choked the life out of Clare did not see Limerick being as good and Clare being so bad

Will be interesting to seen can Limerick get up to thoose performance levels again and again for the rest of the year my suspicion is they can’t

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,128 ✭✭✭Marrooned

3 more games for Limerick to an all Ireland.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,039 ✭✭✭Nickindublin

I think you mean 4. 2 more games in the round robin and then a semi. Limerick did similar last year. Clare were awful lets be honest. But thats not Limerick fault. IMO this AI is wide open.
