    No

    there are three wild cards

    Winner of Champions Cup
    Winner of Challenge Cup
    Winner of URC

Those three winners are guaranteed Champions Cup qualification

After that it goes by league stage finishing position to bring it up to 8 teams

So if Ulster win and finish 9th, that leaves 7 berths remaining

The winner of the URC will automatically get qualification and be a top seed in the Champions Cup

Leinster might win the Champions Cup but as they are almost guaranteed to finish high enough in the league standings anyway it won’t matter to qualification

but to add to your question, if Munster finish 7th in that scenario, Munster would miss out!

Wonderful performance by Ulster. Defence and attack. If they can get a few of the injured back you just never know.

congrats Ulster that was a performance to be proud of, I don’t think there was a single player who didn’t play well. Good luck for the final.

Was going to post the same at the time and see someone else did too - playing and watching rugby nearly 40 years now and, honestly and genuinely,he is the worst tackler I've ever seen, maybe bar a lad I played with who used lie down and try and make the attacker trip over him.

That first missed tackle lead to them breaking the gainline and going through the phases for a try and the second one... he needed to send him into the stands, it was a pathetic effort.

The fact Byrne played as poorly as he did, for as long as he did, and SP wasn't brought on spoke volumes. And then when he did Leinster hitherto brilliant defence went to pot.

I stand by my first post on the thread - Leinster should have started Frawley over Byrne. It'll be a big decision for the final and business end of the season.

Frawley was supposedly carrying a knock, or I think he’d have been on the bench.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,456 ✭✭✭FtD v2

Montpellier haven’t got there yet and while they’re a good side, they’d be no one’s definition of a powerhouse European team.

This is a team who’ve never gotten out of their pool in the European Cup.

Frawley is not a 10 and never has been and starting him ahead of Byrne would be madness.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,880 ✭✭✭leakyboots

Ah makes sense given he got the nod since Farrell dropped SP.

The move to Connacht should be good for him under Lancaster - my prediction is he'll be backup to Crowley soon enough

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,456 ✭✭✭FtD v2

Nah I’m sceptical - he’s not a 10 IMO and never has been. Literally wouldn’t be able to name 3 good games he’s played at 10 and I’d wager I’ve seen every game he’s played as a pro or close enough.

Lancaster didn’t think he was a 10 when he was in Leinster either.

Tector would have more legitimate claim to be a 10, and he's playing 12 for a reason. Frawley could be a top level 12 imo, he has a great set of skills for it.

If anyone knows of 3 tickets for Bilbao genuine rugby supporters here heading over for the 23rd

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,906 ✭✭✭Dave_The_Sheep

I might have 4 tickets (to both finals) for face value (€660 total) as our group isn't able to go due to unforeseen circumstances. Let me know if that is of interest. I do just have to make absolutely certain the others in the group haven't changed their minds but I don't think they will.

Sorry that doesn't make any sense to me. You have 3 leagues involved. URC, English premiership and French Top 14 in both Champions and Challenge Cup. So the winners of the Champions Cup and Challenge Cup in effect are potentially impacting teams in their own league. And as for the winner of the URC over the other two leagues getting automatic qualification is simply bizarre

The leagues decide their own criteria for European qualification. Just a few years ago it was based on geography first, position second.

Don't ever accuse another poster of an unwillingness to accept reality 🙄

and Neinaber has ruined Leinster, Ringrose, Ireland etc. Same excuses being trotted out time after time.

At this stage a blind man could see that Sam Prendergast won't cut it given his defensive issues. He just isn't up to it at this level from a physicality perspective. And the rest of his game just isn't outstanding to make up for it. He would need to be outstanding in every other facet of the game to excuse how poor he is defensively.

There are none so blind as those who refuse to see...

They could try not bloody playing him on the wing though…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,005 ✭✭✭almostover

Ah come off it Podge. You're always finding an excuse for the guy's inexcusable defensive frailties.

He can't defend to anything near the required level in any area of the pitch. Simple as. His career is going nowhere unless he sorts that out. Or else becomes a world beater in every other facet of play. It's that bad.

He hasn't the pace to tackle on the wing, or the physicality to tackle anywhere on the pitch. It's at the point where his team would nearly be better off with 14 on the pitch when he's anywhere in the defensive line.

I get that he's trying, but he's not improving at all.

very fair point as a massive Sam fan personally but we’re on a SF champions cup so why take the risk v Frawley who executes the tackle every time?

Yeah but Sexton and Ross Byrne were on the scene then. Standard of other contenders now is leagues lower with Harry and Sam.

JGP is running the show anyway most of the time, if he's there you need someone who can kick goals and tackle and keep things ticking over passing wise.

Sam is probably the best passer of the two and can do most damage with a dominant platform... but it doesn't matter a fiddlers when he's not even a turnstile in defence. Harry Byrne is extremely flaky and prone to days like today. He's still a better option than Sam though.

Frawley might not be a better outhalf than either at their best but he won't give you days like today at his worst is my feeling on it.

Frawley has never shown the temperament needed to play 10. He's apt to buried in a ruck than organizing the backline. Let the man play 12. Does no one remember how Paddy Wallace got fucked around with being shoehorned in at 10?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,880 ✭✭✭leakyboots

Yeah, all fair points.. but he's only had 19 games at 10 in blue and I don't know how many of them are starts.

I don't think Leo will suddenly start playing him now but I reckon he'll bench

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators, Paid Member Posts: 33,942 Mod ✭✭✭✭Podge_irl

    100% guilty as charged.

I still maintain his defence in the line at 10 is ok. not good, but passable. But the geniuses at Leinster keep putting him out in the back 3 for some inexplicable reason.

I completely disagree that he isn't improving though. He clearly is.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators, Paid Member Posts: 33,942 Mod ✭✭✭✭Podge_irl

He has only had 19 games at 10 for a reason. It was very clear at an early age that he wasn't cut out for it. He needs too much time on the ball.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,018 ✭✭✭✭aloooof

    I dunno, Podge.

We’ve been hearing for a season and a half that he’s improving. I’m not seeing it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,087 ✭✭✭Former Former Former

I presume the theory yesterday was at 29-11, the game was safe enough to give Sam some minutes rather than putting Luke on the wing.

His attempt on Drean was horrendous but it’s not a situation many OHs ever find themselves in, he got caught in two minds completely.

But yes, he definitely is improving on the whole, but still a looong way to go

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 361 ✭✭big-al

    he might be back.

Ian Humphreys said last night (he is an agent for a lot of these Ulster players) he that he is recovering well, starting to train and his season isn’t over yet….

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,005 ✭✭✭almostover

I think the issue though is that there's nowhere to hide him in the defensive line against the top teams. Yes, he shouldn't have been caught out wide yesterday. But it's a CC semi final against three time winners Toulon stacked with internationals in their side. They are going to stretch any defensive setup and get it out of alignment. The fall back then is that you expect professionals at this level to make a 1:1 tackle on a player who had to slow up to collect a cross field kick. It's inexcusable at this level.

I'd debate his defensive improvement too. Yes he's improved vs. when he first came on the scene. But it's not a large improvement and it's still miles off the level required. I remain unconvinced he can get to a passable level in defence. And as I've said previously I'm not convinced either that the rest of his game is good enough to be ignoring his defensive issues.

just watching the toulon match on replay.

The Ioane incident is as close to soccer as you get. He was never hit in the head, went into the next tackle attempting to step it, the. offloaded got up and went back into the line, nothing wrong with him. Absolutely nothing

Didn’t go down until the Toulon Lineout, Doris over begging trying to get someone carded and Ioane was only looking to waste time as they were down to 13.
