I note that there hasn't been an active thread on this forum for old photos of Dublin, especially from the 20th century, for a very long time.

Therefore, I'm starting a new thread on Dublin in the 20th century, a period of dramatic change for Dublin when it underwent profound change in social and economic terms, from a deeply poverty-stricken, peripheral and compact city of circa 300,000 souls in 1900 in the United Kingdom to the large, sprawling capital city of the Republic of Ireland in the midst of the Celtic Tiger economic boom with 1.5 million in its metro area by 1999.

Old photos, old maps, literature, any memorabilia of Dublin during the 20th century is very welcome on this thread.

Collapsed tenement buildings on Church Street in the north inner city, September 1913

    1_3u664dXQOeNQ3nSUA5JkEA.jpg

Seven people were killed in the tragedy which highlighted the appalling living conditions in slums for over one third of Dublin's population at the time.

"These bricks were returning once more to dust, one by one these walls would bulge outwards, crack, collapse into rubble. They were despised and uncared for, like the tenants they sheltered, who lived for the most part on bread and tea and bore children on rickety beds to grow up in the same hardship and hunger".

A page from 'Public Utility Societies, Dublin Corporation and the Development of Dublin, 1920-1940' by Ruth McManus of The Regional Technical College Dundalk, showing a plan of Gaeltacht Park, Whitehall, Dublin 9. This was one of a number of estates on the northside developed in the 1920s/30s.

This is looking towards College Green from sort of opposite the Weavers of Ireland / formerly Subway / formerly Colemans shop; a totally normal direction to look yet looks very alien cause its the opposite direction to how traffic has gone on Westmoreland Street for decades. Took me a while to figure out where it was!

    Aerial photo of Greenhills, 1975

    FB_IMG_1777932936642.jpg

Greenhills Road runs from right to left in upper third of the image.

The M50 motorway runs right through the middle of this location today; note the new factories in Ballymount in the upper part of the photo, new housing under construction in the very large Kilnamanagh estate in Tallaght to the LHS and the recently built Green Park estate to the right.

Tymon Lane runs along the bottom half of the image.
