USC was meant to be "temporary" myth

It is repeated daily ad nauseam that the USC was meant to be temporary, this isn't true. A 1% income levy introduced in October 2008s budget was meant to be temporary alright but this was before the **** really hit the fan and everybody accepted that the tax base should be widened. There was already a tax called the "health levy" on incomes over about 400€ per week long before 2008, the USC was a merger of the income levy and the health levy and it was always meant to be permanent along with a property tax and water charges as part of widening the tax base in budget 2011.

The USC is a very efficient tax as its broadly applied and difficult to avoid. If people want reductions in tax, its better to reduce other taxes and leave the USC in place.

Well income tax was introduced in 1799 to fund the Napoleonic War & in fairness to the Brits they scrapped it in 1816 but brought it back in 1842, so I'm hopeful they will scrap it again soon :- ) lol
