I was in the public service years ago and I remember an older new entrant 'buying back years' for max pension accrual.

I've since been home with kids for years and it's time to go back to work - is it still possible to do this in the CS? Info on the scheme is still showing up on gov.ie but I'm thinking it's not available to those joining or re-joining after 2013, if anyone can confirm?

    TY!

AFIK you would be joining on the new scheme (SPSPS) and any previous service on an old scheme would be frozen until your retirement. SPSPS does not work on years of service. Every paycheck you contribute according to a formula and earn benefits according to a formula. You can make additional SPSPS contributions (annually) to buy extra benefits, but its expensive IMHO. You could just make AVC's which would produce a similar result, and is probably a better option.

Yes it would be the new scheme if the break in service is more then 6 months.

From my knowledge the old scheme for buy back was good but the new one is far too expensive - maybe 20k per year buyback-obviously differs depending on salary.Separate PRSA/AVC through cornmarket etc are the only way now, no one would advise to do years buyback now. If you did a few years buyback for 60k and died in the morning the money would be wasted/gone vs perhaps having a 60k pension pot for the estate……

Wouldn’t the €60k be counted towards calculating Children’s Pension or Spouses pension?

if your married and/or have dependant children…even at that the yearly pension amount is small, given the 60k could be generating returns and be withdraw when needed post reitrement/inheritance. It's very expensive…….
