If the trial is successful and it goes permanent. Are there enough frequency blocks to have both mux 1 and 2 on air together and both fully nationwide? How many nationwide mux would be possible from a technical point of view assuming money wasn’t an issue?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 76,149 ✭✭✭✭L1011

There are two nationwide cleared frequencies, neither of which are in use so far I believe, as there is significant trialling of different SFN configurations. 12A and 12C.

Everything else is regional but can be combined to a national service.

Probably 4 nationals could be done. Which is an unprecedented amount of services

Ironically I'm in N Tipp but I don't seem to be getting Keeper Hill, probably blocked by a local hill. Still getting Bob GHR etc on mux 1. Should get them on the road tomorrow.

There are 3 national allottments coordinated by Ireland and Britain. 12C would be RTÉ. @kazoo106 sent the doc a few threads back, cant find it for the life of me!

    Found it.

    10A - NATIONAL 3
    12A - NATIONAL 2
    12C - NATIONAL 1

RTE would be unable to block someone else using something they aren't. Dog in the manger isnt a thing for this

So 5 nationals would be possible and will also never be needed

5 nationals? as in you mean the regional ones as a "national"?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 76,149 ✭✭✭✭L1011

You can construct a national network out of multiple regional allocations

Ah, yes. I suppose, but would that be allowed? that would be the next thing . Nothing is publicised at the moment. AFAIK Fáilte are on a Test & Trial license only

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 76,149 ✭✭✭✭L1011

    Mux2 is effectively that already.

Three nationals would likely be enough for all demand anyway

Aye that's true . Even if we did what Sweden did and put RTÉ on one Bauer on another and Onic on another you'd never fill them all

Just about to post the same:

    FailteDAB 4 Stations 30 Apr '26.png

I'm getting mild tropo here but on FM at the moment indoors: Galway Bay listenable on 96.8MHz, Shannonside FM clear on 104.6 and Classic Hits listenable on 104.9.

listening to GHR on dab+ in Sligo from an upstairs window.

Picking up Rì Rà, BoB FM , GHR and one other station here in North Tipperary. Four radio stations over all. I'm sure more will be added. Great to have a choice all be it limited.

By the looks of this thread they just about made the deadline of an April launch. I checked my car at 9.30 last night and only the failte test tone. Happy to have the 4 new ones, decent quality out of them too

Great to see (well hear) the new DAB+ stations here in Cork this morning. Coming in loud and clear. Stronger signal that the old DAB services as they used to drop when I went into the multi-story car park. No such issues with the new DAB+ signal. Bring on more stations!

I’m off to Cork and Kerry driving next week so this is good to know

GHR is a good Rte gold type channel

My favourite up here in Arklow music wise is actually Dublins Q102 so a bit sad I won’t hear that beyond Gorey

Will GHR from Ballyguile in Wicklow seamlessly switch to white mountain as I head south though?

Well done to Failte DAB for making their Mux 2 launch window (by the skin of their teeth, haha) - it had to be a massive undertaking to get all the transmitter sites ready and tested, so fair play to their crew.

It'll be interesting to see how similar/different Mux 1 and Mux 2 end up.

Hopefully they'll extend their reach to the South West and the North West in the future.

It was, of course, their own deadline that they nearly missed. They could have started the project earlier or given a more realistic deadline, few updates to the public never hurt anybody. Now they've launched, technically - on time, with 4 stations Vs the 19 they have on mux 1. To me it seems like a weak start

I wouldn't go patting them on the back for a job well done just yet. Hopefully they improve from here on

Rì Rà, BoB FM , GHR and OnicHits after a scan this morning here in Pembrokeshire.

Handy while sitting in the garden — car radio lost them in seconds when dropping off my hill but good to have on a portable outside.

Completely understand, the delay on launching stations is the fault of An Coimisiún, They aren't giving the green light yet to some apparently. Understand the frustration though!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,785 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

Possibly, but it would be on a regional mux at best. A quick google suggests that the Munster region has 8 local stations across the 6 counties so is likely not enough to attract a DAB mux of its own unless some national stations get in on the act as well

Who knows ;) in England they have muxes with only 1 station
