Has anyone here actually seen the movie? If so, how was it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,860 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

I wouldn't be surprised if Conrad Murray recorded this hoping to get something incriminating. Michael was out of it, no inhibitions whatsoever and he was still talking about helping children.

Seeing as you’re determined to paint the man in such an angelic light.

How would you have felt if your children slept in a bed with Michael Jackson or more to the point any adult male who isn’t family?

Was all this just completely innocent along with the books locked away in a safe that had pictures of not fully dressed children?

Forgot to actually give my thoughts on the movie, saw it on Tuesday evening after work.

Been a while since I’ve been to the cinema, good to see a movie on a decent screen (iSense in Charlestown), last one I was at was a tiny screen with no tiered seating.
The actor playing Jackson was perfectly cast, had his mannerisms down to a tee. Reminded me in a way of the chap who played Roy Keane in Saipan, just understood the mannerisms of the star they were portraying.

The music was obviously excellent (have never denied the genius of Jackson), majority of the actors did a decent job with what they were given.

But let’s face it, it’s a glorious puff piece, even more so than Bohemian Rhapsody, which was very tame, it’s a 4, maybe pushing a 5/10 at best. Average movie with great music.

I've seen it, it's great. And I went and seen it again today. It's still brilliant.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,291 ✭✭✭Theboinkmaster

yes it’s brilliant - as an MJ fan it was perfect.

if you’re not a fan of MJ though I’d skip it.

What has 1917 got to do with world war 2. It's called 1917 cause it's set in 1917 - World War 1.

World War 2 was a completely different event. The movie is called 1917 cause that was the time period that the movie was set in. It's not called World War 1 or World War 2. If it was, then it would be expected that the movie would cover events in those wars.

The MJ movie is named Michael, and I guess the general opinion is that it should contain all issues relating to the subject matter, not just cherry picking by the family as to what is appropriate or not.

You clearly don't know what you're talking about. The original script had all the allegations, strip search etc. and then they had to re-shoot and cut the film in two due to legal issues.

The film only goes up to 1984 - there's a sequel for the time period after that. As has been repeated in this thread several times.

It's saying a lot that there's a pretty small number of people arriving into the thread to say it's great… 😂 I did talk to a work colleague who went to it the other day and thought it was pretty terrible.

I was pointing out that whatever Sligeach had in mind for his comparison, that it doesn't make any sense.

Don't be so naive. It is unlikely that there will be a sequel. Those behind the movie now have to make statements that a sequel will follow; otherwise it would make a mockery of the current movie and there would be even more widespread condemnation of it. Because they made that statement, it keeps the mob at peace for now, and they put away their knives and wait in anticipation for part 2 to come out. In a years time, we will get some statement that the film is on hold for some legal reason or some other excuse. At that point, the novelty will have worn off, nobody is going to care. A movie is on record showing Michael's life up 1984, and paints him in a good life. And loads of $$$$ have been made. Happy days for everybody involved.

    That's what I would do anyway 😏

Again, what is wrong with some people? "Cherry picking"? The actual Michael movie itself ends in 1984, a decade before Evan Chandler made up lies in 1993 for monetary gain. How can it cover something that hasn't happened yet?

The movie was split in… you know what I've explained all this several times before. Some critics will have you believe there's no plot to this movie, but it shows his beginnings, his rise, and Luke Skywalker Michael as he struggles to break free from the control of Darth Vader Joe.

It shows various other aspects that shaped his life, the vitiligo, the plastic surgery, the Pepsi commercial fire accident which resulted in 3rd degree burns and nerve damage to his scalp, which some would say led to an addiction to painkillers. His pet animals were his friends, which is sad in a way.

But Michael often expressed a profound emotional connection to his pet animals, viewing them as trustworthy, innocent companions that offered unconditional love. He frequently contrasted this trust with the judgment and dishonesty he felt from people, stating that animals do not judge or gossip.

His only other friends were his brothers and sisters, but that faded as they got older and they had their own lives to live. The movie touched on that when Michael returned with board games from shopping, and he asked if they wanted to play Twister later that evening, and they explained how one had a date and another brother had his own family he had to go back to.

Bill Bray features in the movie. I don't think it conveys far enough just how much of a father figure he was to Michael.

That's actually a fair point and yes I'd agree that'd be the best thing to do!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,860 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

No the majority of people who have seen it said it's great. The rest haven't seen it and seem to think their opinion matters.

Can you please answer my simple questions that you continue to ignore to in your determination to paint the man in such an angelic light and a complete victim.

How would you have felt if your children slept in a bed with Michael Jackson or more to the point any adult male who isn’t family?

Was all this just completely innocent along with the books locked away in a safe that had pictures of not fully dressed children?

If you refuse to answer it shows you have no interest in honest discussion and want to just continue to worship your idol ignoring his many serious faults.

    Michael – 3/10

Putting the crappy, overly dim, modern movie lighting to one side, I found myself enjoying the first chunk of this film. The Jackson 5 era has all the best songs, and it harks back to a more ‘innocent’ time in MJ’s career. That all quickly evaporated the second Jaafar Jackson appeared and started singing some isolated ‘Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough’ vocals. Man, that was rough. You can see why blending in the actual MJ vocals was a necessity. Jaafar proves himself to be a decent mimic of MJ’s on-stage persona, nailing the dance moves and very much ‘looking the part’. His acting chops are just about passable in some scenes, but toe-curling in others.

As has been discussed already, it portrays MJ as the second coming. Why bother putting his traumatic upbringing and fractured relationship with his domineering father front and centre, when you’re not going to make any effort to show the aftermath of said trauma? He is literally portrayed as a saint. The rest of the film doesn’t offer much more than cosplay recreations of things we can all look up on YouTube. It really does beg the question; what are we doing here?

My favourite part was when Michael quoted Fred Astaire and told a music video director to “Pull the camera back and shoot the dancers in full” and then the film proceeds to do anything but. Instead, it has more of that awful ‘whiplash’ editing from that god awful Queen film.

We’ve been overexposed to MJ’s music our entire lives, but this did briefly manage make me take a step back, look at it objectively, and acknowledge that he really was a phenomenal talent. The music he made with Quincy Jones is outrageously good pop music. A back catalogue that is of such quality that it simply cannot be ignored or shelved, no matter how tainted the artist is. When you think about it, us Brits are blessed that Gary Glitter’s discography is complete and utter tosh.

The one thing this film has done is answer the question; ‘Are the masses willing to separate the art from the artist?’ The box office answers with a resounding yes. Come back Woody Allen, all is forgiven.

Looking forward to Michael 2: The Return of Jaafar

My daughter is going to it tomorrow. She knows little or nothing about controversaries in his life, so is not tainted by any preconception that many have when walking into the cinema. Will be interesting to see what her take is.

But then again, she was saying to me how herself and her friends are just going to dance through the movie, so I am not sure how much in touch with reality she really is 😯

I threw on his music in the car this morning. Such great songs. It's just such a pity that he turned into what he did. Would have gone down as one of the all time legends in my opinion.

You're really struggling to find a positive review if you're resorting to the critical drinker. 😂 He's taking a break from complaining about everything being too woke for his liking?

So now you're just getting annoyed at people for giving honest reviews? You're entitled to love the movie as much as you do but being actively annoyed by people who didn't think it was great is a bit odd.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,860 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

You keep telling yourself that. Anything positive said is followed up with negativity.

    And this:

"When you think about it, us Brits are blessed that Gary Glitter’s discography is complete and utter tosh."

Brits? This is Boards.IE. Gary Glitter is a convicted pedophile. Michael Jackson is an innocent man in name and the eyes of the law.

Mod note: You clearly have no interest in engaging constructively here other than insulting anyone who disagrees with you about the film and its subject, so either be less belligerent in your posts or please do not post in this thread again. Next time there’s a post like this it will be a warning or ban.

I like him and agree with the anti woke stuff. But if he’s not your cup of tea then that’s cool.

as regards reviews in general it doesn’t bother me. The film has been a huge commercial success and myself and my family really enjoyed it so I’m happy out.

just saw it, I wouldn't be his number one fan, but it was an excellent film, I'd recommend it

I have spoken to my daughter and her friends about it. They thought it was very good and the lead actor was excellent. I know he is a relation etc.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth house?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,321 ✭✭✭MOR316

    That's their opinion.

Its saying a lot that you're coming into a thread to mock people for enjoying a movie you have admitted you have no interest in seeing

In fairness, that wasn't remotely mocking anyone who enjoyed it. You're perfectly entitled to enjoy it.
