UC3 (the joint venture between UEFA and ECA which now controls the commercial rights to the Champions League) advertised tenders for the rights in the five major European markets (including UK), as well as a new global package of Tuesday first choice in October with bids closing this week.

There are now rumours to the effect that Amazon has won the global package. That would not really be a surprise. What is a surprise though is the second part of the rumour, that TNT has lost the UK rights to Paramount.

Would've thought Dazn would have been all over those rights.

FFS, yet another streaming service I need... alternative methods becoming more attractive now.

I just subbed to Paramount for this first time as it's half price currently. Little on there that interests me, won't keep it more than a month.

Looks like Warner will be solely focused on HBO & Discovery content going forward.

By 2027, they could be part of Paramount group anyway based on the takeover rumours

Amazon have now confirmed they have won first pick Tuesday rights for the UK and Ireland (and first pick Wednesday rights in Germany and Italy). That was supposed to be a global package, so not sure what’s happened there.

Edit: that first pick in Ireland is apparently like the current deal non-exclusive, so that seems to confirm that the UK rights holders continue to also get non-exclusive rights in ROI.

No confirmation of the Paramount deal.

Assuming it is true - and it is being widely reported - it is a massive blow to TNT alright. Having already lost the European rugby, leaves them with the Premier League and PRL as their main premium rights. (People will still pay as long as they have the FAPL, though).

Also who saw this coming? Sky have won the UK rights to the Europa and Conference Leagues. Putting them back in a share of UEFA club football for the first time since 2015, though I think it’s the first time they’ve aired the secondary competition.

could be the beginning of the end for TNT, they have 1 premier league game a week, cannot see football fans handing over a big monthly sub for that now that they have lost Europen club games, with all these subscriptions needed it is no wonder people look for alternatives

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,096 ✭✭✭✭lertsnim

For one game a week in what is usually a bad slot it is certainly not worth it if the Premier League is your only interest.

Paramount deal is now confirmed, they get the final and all remaining games other than first choice Tuesday.

    Amazon get first choice Tuesday.

    The BBC retain highlights.

Sky get the Europa and Conference League.

That is the UK rights which normally include non-exclusive rights in Ireland (and Amazon have confirmed this at least regarding their package). The ROI rights are normally among the last to be sold in Europe and we might not hear about them for another 18 months based on previous cycles.

The FAPL will always be a subscription driver. It is true this makes TNT a weaker proposition for the football fan, but I think they are safe as long as they retain the PL.

But watch what happens with the next auction (probably next year for the 2028-31 cycle) and whether TNT retain those rights.

If they lost that I think they need to look towards re-orienting back towards a “Eurosport” model for their remaining rights.

A few years ago, along with EPL and Champions/Europa League rights, TNT/BT had Serie A and Bundesliga. As well as regularly broadcasting the FA Cup. There continues to be a big reduction of their football coverage. Perhaps without UCL to pay for, they might bid for more ELP rights. They'll need to do something. One EPL game a week is certainly not worth the subscription.

I suspect the final will end up on Channel 5.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,778 ✭✭✭channelsurfer2

yeah thats a good point actually if they are allowed it in the deal as BBC will have highlights rights.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 144 ✭✭Cmx95

Could channel 5 be showing a few games or even a goal show

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,288 ✭✭✭✭Dodge

BBC have FTA highlight rights in the UK so can’t imagine channel 5 will be too involved

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,778 ✭✭✭channelsurfer2

they might show the final live if it has a UK team but who knows. when are irish rights usually put out to tender?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,288 ✭✭✭✭Dodge

premier announced they had the 2024-2027 rights late in 2023. Virgin made their announcement in Feb 2024

We’re nearly always one of the last to be announced

Can't imagine premier going for Europa league or conference now that sky have the rights

One of the things that will be at play there is the potential for whoever wins those rights to be doing host broadcaster duties at games in Ireland.

That didn’t stop Sky when it came to the GAA but the difference here may be that they’ve rights to show their coverage in Ireland anyway; why would they pick up the Irish rights which come with the extra expense of potentially doing host broadcaster duties for League of Ireland teams on top of the large number of Premier League, SPFL and in recent years Cymru Premier and NIFL teams that are qualifying for these competitions?

The answer of course is “exclusivity”, but I also think things have worked well this season, with TNT showing the UK teams and Premier concentrating mostly on the Irish ones. Of course it’s the unprecedented event of two League of Ireland teams reaching the group stage that’s prompted that informal division of labour.

I am surprise virgin media not showing champion league semi final last night and next week is there reason ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 106 ✭✭Round tower

To do wit the TV rights, but TNT did not hae last nights game either, the 2 World snooker QF were on TNT 1 & 3 with PL highlights on TNT 2

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 3,349 ✭✭✭hold my beer

The match was on Premier Sports last night

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,096 ✭✭✭✭lertsnim

Prime Video had Tuesday's game as they have first pick in the UK on Tuesday's. Prime Video also showed that game here but it was not exclusive.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,954 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

The reason is simple - Premier have first pick (shared with RTE on a Wednesday), VMTV have second and subsequent picks. But on semi final (and final) nights, there is only one game each night. So VMTV’s rights end at the QF stage. Just the way the contract is.

The UK rights are different because TNT have all Wednesday games so they do get a semi final.

    https://www.theguardian.com/football/2026/apr/30/disney-plus-live-champions-league-games-europe-auction

It mentions the following: The recent auction was for Champions League rights in Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Central America, Czechia, Denmark, Finland, Mexico, Norway, Poland, Portugal, the Republic of Ireland, Romania, Slovakia, South America, Sweden, and Switzerland.

Should we expect to see something them about the Irish rights soon?

At least we will be spared the antics of the Thierry Henry, Jamie Carragher and Micah Richards studio coverage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,955 ✭✭✭Delta2113

Premier Sports confirm UEFA Champions League coverage until 2031.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,288 ✭✭✭✭Dodge

They’ve actually specified Tuesday night coverage, which is interesting in itself

No more Tuesday night free to air football from next year folks. Sky have taken Virgin media's champions League package with premier keeping one game on Tuesday and rte one game on Wednesday. All Thursday night football will be exclusive to sky sports.
