Probably the easiest way to think of the EV is you get 10% charge an hour. So an EV rate with a 3 hour window is only a 30% top up each night. Energia have 4 hours so 40%.

If you use more than that you are plugging in every night and worried about forgetting to plug in. So a good 15c full night rate really is better than a 10c window.

If you use 10-20% a day then a EV window is fine as you only need to plug in every other day. But use so little it's hardly worth the higher day price.

How would I have better information? As you said yourself there's no way they'd include it and I've never heard of it actually happening.

It's a bit of a mad gamble to hope you don't get a bill for 14 months or whatever on the off chance you get away with it.

not really a gamble at all if you simply put the money aside

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 513 ✭✭✭Lester_Burnham

I'd find a way to mess that up. Me nerves would be shot waiting for the deadline 😂

yea, it is 25 cent, end of.

there is no additional 9% vat which some are adding incorrectly

anyone ever change their address while using flogas?

I’m being told that they can’t just change my address, instead they have to give me a new plan which is about 30% higher than my current plan. Surely that’s not right?!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,278 ✭✭✭Escapees

Sounds about right... I think the contract is tied to an MPRN which is obviously tied to your current address. If you were just changing the name of your house or something, then it would be a different story. But you are talking about a completely different property and therefore MPRN etc.

ah really? For gas they could do it, but just not for electricity

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 253 ✭✭knipper

I did that a few years ago with electric Ireland. Just swapped to my wife's name

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 214 ✭✭TabbyLongTails

to remain on the same plan? Not sure now that would help but maybe I’m missing something

Need to help my parents, they are high usage day night.

What’s the best day night rate (I was lucky to get flo gas fixed price deal a few months back).

If they've a smart meter, download their HDF file and upload it to energypal.

If they've a standard meter, take their most recent bill and their first bill (should cover 12 months approximately), subtract the readings from one another to get yearly usage. Pop that into bonkers.

When it comes to D/N rates, it starts to depend on the ratio between the Day and Night units and what is cheapest for one person may be more expensive for others.

I'd be very careful using energypal. They recommended a smart plan which includes a peak rate and a night rate about twice what I'm currently paying despite about 95% of my usage being at nighttime and between 5 and 7 (dinner time)

Smart electricity calculator can show you what you paid or what you would have paid depending on your electricity rates

Just wondering what are people expecting in terms of unit rates for this winter? Will we see the return of almost 50c a kwh?

One trend I noticed after the war in Ukraine broke out was that providers jacked up standing charges massively to help them disguise even higher unit rates than the ones published on plans. I remember at one point Electric Ireland had a plan with a €420 per year standing charge attached whereas the year before that Id been paying a standing charge of €127 annually with GlowPower at the time.

The Prepay operators can also use this tactic, they can have an eye watering annual standing charge but lower unit rates than competitors, thus allowing them to advertise 'the cheapest electricity in the market'. The practice should be banned IMO and standing charges should be set across all operators as a flat rate.

Im hoping we dont hit the 45c-50c a unit threshold again this winter but its beginning to look inevitable because yer man doesnt know how to get out of a mess of his own making.

👆 the latest news from the uae may be a help, they have announced they are leaving the oil ground that limits the amount of oil they can produce, they have been in this group for 50 years and apparently it’s now sell sell sell from May 1st which will reduce the price of oil massively

Hopefully this will keep the prices down for us

How are they going to get it out?

    Oil is $118 today.

This allows them to produce another 1 million barrels a day but since they are currently limited to exporting crude via a pipeline limited to 1.5 to 1.8 mbpd which is already averaging 1.67mbpd nlit makes **** all difference until hormuz is reopened.

I can't see how it won't get worse. I'm shopping for a new plan and kicking myself I didn't pay the penalty to change plan a few months ago. But then I got to thinking I might looking at today's prices and thinking the same in a month or two .

When I add my file to that, its says there not much difference (for me) between a smart 24 rate and smart EV with EI. But it doesn't account that I would shift more usage to night time if I came off the 24 plan.

I switched to a new plan, I was offered 24% to renew but switched to my wife and got 28%

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,613 ✭✭✭wassie

That makes your wife 4% more valuable than you 😁

I don’t think any site will make a suggestion based on predicted changes. It simply looks at your past usage and tells you what the price of the plan would be based on the last 12 months usage.

You need to modify the file to consider shifting usage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,555 ✭✭✭✭Flinty997

    True.

I created my own spreadsheet to see which plan was better as the % shifted to night time etc.

It's also trying to second guess can you shift other people's patterns in the house. Straight off the bat I know I could shift 20%. But it's not the slam dunk I assumed.

Definitely there is an adjustment required and buy in needed from the older household members (if you have them).

A month before our 24hr plan expired, we practiced shifting our power usage to match TOU plans (day/peak/night).

Then got the HDF file and modified it so that it only had the previous months worth of data and plugged it into to Energypal. Even with a small amount of data, there was a clear indication we would be about €600/yr better off.

A year later and we saved €639 compared to the old 24 plan.

    All good ideas.

reports coming out they aim to produce and sell 5 to 10m barrels per day

Could be all poppy cock though

I've looked back over my bills. The highest I paid for electricity was just under 35c. That was on a 24 hour plan. I have an email offering a TOU rate where the peak electricity price was 45c but that was only for 2 hours a day. If you ever paid 50c you were being robbed.

The highest gas rate was just under 13c. Looking back to 2019, gas was just over 5c.

What would be considered the best plans for a new build with heat pump heating system at the moment? Currently on a temporary electric Ireland account which doesn't allow access to the smart meter, so I'm currently unable to measure energy usage.

Hoping to get on a plan and set up the smart meter to have oversight of the usage.

Looking at Electric Ireland they are offering 31.8c on their 24hr rate with a standing charge of €250 or €315 depending on whether you are urban or rural. Their Smart EV rate (called night boost) is 33.25c day, 16.4c night and 9.62c with no peak rate between 2am and 4am but the standing charges go up to €328 or €400 a year

If your usage figures aren't much different you likely have about half of your load already shifted to night/boost time so be careful and make sure you can shift more is the only thing I'd say. Remember you can't go back to Nightsaver after moving to a smart plan which can be quite limiting
