Punditry isn’t a serious profession , so when it tries to be serious it deserves to be taken as the joke it is, that’s what I find funny. Do you really think pundits are there to professionally analyse the game or provide entertaining narrative that may provoke discussion?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,217 ✭✭✭Fionn1952

I didn't even directly comment on whether they should have defended better, but rather said that while it was a great game for the neutral, criticism of the defense certainly wasn't clueless.

I've not made that comment as a defense of Arsenal's current tactics, as any reflection of Arsenal, but entirely as a standalone comment responding to someone stating that any criticism of the defending is clueless.

The knee-jerk reaction to disliking Arsenal's style of play morphing into the extreme of, 'any criticism of purely attacking football can't be tolerated' is mildly amusing though.

If I'm going to comment specifically on Arsenal, I'd say that as a fan, I'd be delighted to see them score 5 goals and also aghast at them conceding 4. I'd be happier going into the second leg with a goal advantage than not of course, but certainly questioning why it wasn't more if we had a 3 goal cushion and kept playing kamikaze football. In fact, I'd dare say that if anyone was watching their own team in a two legged tie in those circumstances didn't agree, they themselves might be a bit clueless.

At least PSG have used the oil money to create something worth watching.

city fans have the worst of both worlds... not being taken seriously and winning stuff in a mind numbingly boring fashion.

I think there are examples of pundits who do analysis and ones that try entertain (I say try because I dont find stuff like Sky Sports entertaining or funny) and the best ones do both simultaneously.

I can think a game was brilliant hear Shay Given who I consider an expert say what the keeper done wrong but still think the game was brilliant.

You don’t need to be a tactical genius to see that at 5-2 psg could have been cuter but I don’t know how that can be one of the major takeaways from that game for any non PSG fan.

People can understand why Arsenal play the way they do and call it putrid. Just like Arsenal fans can not care how their team wins matches , if other fans find it boring.

There’s rare examples but they are rare.

I remember watching Jose a couple of times and he was just next level analysis, he really didn’t fit in with the “it’s a game of two halves” type of analysis we are normally spoon fed.

One thing that should be noted when it comes to play style, tactics etc and really comes into play more so last night when PSG went 5-2 up. There was a few posts about how PSG should have shut up shop and just played on the counter. Or that Bayern could/would have done the same in the same scenario.

Bayern & PSG are 2 teams and squads that are set up to dominate the game, take it to the opposition, create chances, outscore the opposition etc etc. That's what is drilled into these players all season. They are set up to be the best attacking team in their league, and play that way every single game domestically, and most of their games in Europe also.

These teams have some top attacking players who excel at 1v1 battles such as Olise, Kvara, Diaz etc or direct running like Doue, Dembele. What good is it telling them to sit back into a deep 4-5-1? These players don't do that, on the whole, so why start doing it half way through a Champions League semi final?

What channel were you watching Kenny Cunningham on last night ? I expected the game to be on Virgin media but it wasn't, with the result I missed it.

Was just listening to Jonathan Wilson who was making that point. Neither team knows how to be defensive even if they wanted to. Reckons Neuer would be found out much earlier in the season at another team too.

It's why it took PSG so long to win the tournament. It's not easy go all the way in this tournament if you are not the full package. Another big team usually exposes you.

Attacking and defending well are both pretty important and getting swept up in what was undoubtedly a very fun game doesn't make criticism of the poor defensive performances redundant.

It wouldn't be my biggest takeaways from the match, but it would certainly qualify as a major talking point in my estimation.

Fully agree with your second paragraph! It'd probably be easier for those people who find it putrid to ignore if some of them didn't try to shoehorn it into absolutely any topic. Half expecting someone to show up in the war in Ukraine thread and say at least Putin isn't defensive like Arteta…

I think Klopp went to next level when pool lost CL final to a dogged Real Madrid and then the next season Pool won it with more pragmatic approach against spurs in CL final.

It’s a clever tactic that the best coaches can use wisely and usually some sort of shithousery is involved. But If it’s not your own team or an underdog trying to beat a favourite I think most fans don’t want to see it as it doesnt usually make for an entertaining game.

Full disclosure I’ve always found Arteta annoying but I know many people used to come up with all sorts of reasons why Sir Alex Ferguson was the worst manager in the world “cause refs” (as if top managers don’t try to influence decisions). I wore it as a badge of honor that they were so wound up about United he was living rent free in their head. I think when my teams manager is winding up rivals it’s funny.

In terms of football entertainment , I think I’m right in saying the season cantona returned from his palace suspension , United won something like half their games in second half of season by one goal , with cantona being the only scorer. Do I or did I give a damn ? Not a chance, United won the league.

This would be my take. I find it bizarre that people get snotty just because others point out the very obvious fact that both those teams last night were poor defensively. And poor at game management.

And I don't buy the "Ossie Ardiles" defense at all. Just because they get away with it in poor leagues doesn't mean they won't get sucker punched by a smart team.

And I can see that happening. Arsenal or Athletico, both of them are good enough to hold off Bayern/PSG while picking them off at the other end, Simone especially is good enough to look at that defending and devise a plan. Defending like that we saw last night is like a big sign to a good manager saying "hit me here".

I think of it that the sport has enough toxic sh*te, certainly at upper level with fifa , uefa , sportswashing and dysfunctional use of VAR. When a banger of a game comes around I dont think many want to hear about what was wrong in the game.

Not saying people can’t discuss the poor defending, just giving my personal view on why I’m not interested in hearing people criticising the defending. As someone said, that game was refreshing for the soul if you are a fan of the sport, let people just absorb it a bit without over thinking it. Ironically part of what VAR use is doing to ruin the game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,522 ✭✭✭Did you smash it

Plenty thought inter would lock out PSG in last years final because they were supposedly good defensively. There’s always a chance but I strongly suspect whoever comes out of the semi next Wednesday will win the final with a bit to spare. Atletico aren’t very good and Arsenal’s attack is mind boggingly out of form.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,880 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

So to get away from "all that shte" we should praise a PSG game and all rip into boring Arsenal and Atletico.

I really really want Atleti to beat PSG in the final and I hope it's the most shthousey performance of all time. As you say fuk sportswashing and Middle Eastern/UEFA corruption.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 1,597 ✭✭✭Dogsdodogsstuff

I don’t care who wins cause I don’t value any of the trophies the sportswash teams rob.

I just elaborated on my position about an entertaining game. I never implied everybody needs to share my view, I didn’t think it would trigger such a sensitive response.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,217 ✭✭✭Fionn1952

If Arsenal manage to finally lift a Champions League trophy, I won't give a sh*te if it's a turgid 1-0 final with the ball in play for 4 minutes total and the only goal being scored from a corner that took an awful deflection off their defender's arse. Couldn't care less if the neutrals would prefer something else.

If Arsenal win the league, I'll happily smile at being called the most boring champion in the Premier League era.....because to be the most boring champion, you're already ahead of everyone who wasn't a champion.

As a counter to that, I'm fully ready to suck it up and listen to the most smug-faced bottle job comments if neither of those happen.

And well you should enjoy it. No issue with fans of teams winning not giving a f**k if their team is boring. Hell I shout at my own teams in Gaelic football and soccer when they don’t close up shop and bring in some sh*thousery or game management. Actually drives me nuts when my teams don’t show even a sliver of cuteness/intelligence (that shouldn’t need to be coached into experienced adult professionals).

But like every other fan I don’t care when my team does it. Im not as angry as some about this , id laugh if tonight’s game was a banger and think “touché Mikel”.

For the craic I’ve thrown €10 on less then 3 goals and €5 each on less then 2 and no goals. Given what some posters said it will be more open then that cause it’s not the old athletico team so I’ve prob just p*ssed it away. But on flipside if the game is scoreless I will enjoy it more then I would have , therefore should not feel the need to come here and moan about it. Theres method to my madness.

Arsenal starting the tried and failed front 3 of Martinelli, Gyokores, Madueke. 🙄

You're using my old strategy from when I used to stick a few bets on.....always put a few quid on Spurs to win. If the won, ah well at least I won a few quid. If they didn't, well at least Spurs didn't win.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 1,597 ✭✭✭Dogsdodogsstuff

Ha, that’s exactly it, I sometimes bet against my own team for that very reason. But Any time I’ve bet on spurs I’ve lost,

Don’t think we’ll get the same brilliance as last night but still expect Arsenal to net a couple

Don't put money on that. That team is far from Arsenal's best eleven.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,251 ✭✭✭✭eh i dunno

I fancied PSG to win it outright but both keepers dont convince me at all. I can see the winners of tonights game quietly fancying their chances in the final. Nick an early goal and go all out defend.

Most important thing for Arsenal is not to get involved with silly incidents, try to keep the game as controlled as possible in the circumstances and do not rile the crowd with any antics.

He's right though. Missing a few key players from the starting 11. If theres a positive for Arsenal tonight especially up front, it will come from the bench.

They will rile the crowd in the first 5 minutes. 🤣
