Enrique number one coach in the world right now imo. Every big team will be after him.

This game solidifies why Slotball isn't the way forward next season. He wants it slow with a low amount of bursts of aggression/speed.

High pressing, high intensity with speed is still the best way to play. Alonso isn't the answer either.

Maybe 3 leagues and 2 CLs for Enrique at PSG will make him look for something else....I'll dream about it anyway.

We don't have the squad for the Luis Enrique attacking style of football though. We did last season, and we sold/released/lost a lot of pace in the summer.

This isn't the way he set up year one though. I'd be confident enough he'd do excellent with the players we currently have not accounting for what we're rumoured to be adding this summer (wideman and DM).

A fast wideman who excels 1v1 is top priority this summer for me.

    This game is crazy.

    Luis Diaz has been unbelievable.

100%. Like I said the other day I'm not sure on Diamande at 100m but he does look a very exciting prospect. Linked with a lad from Betis the last day or two but haven't a clue what he's like.

Tidy little player that Diaz. Would be nice if we could find a player like him....

He was a flop at Celta Vigo and Roma.

Kompany flopped in the premier League with Burnley.

75% of it is the players you have. That dictates everything.

Yes they had a way they wanted to play, as they got better players it worked better.

Slot has a way to play, pretty confident it doesn't fit with how the top teams play. Confirmed by the man himself who drools over how PSG play....but plays the opposite.

I would say it’s even closer to 80/85

The squad this season is so disjointed. I am not sure any manager would have done much better this season.

Too much upheaval and change made it very difficult for everyone. There will be some this season too but Slot has to make it work as he won’t have much credit left in the bank.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,065 ✭✭✭✭noodler

Absolutely but it was more than that.

It doesn't matter what area of the pitch the ball was, the passing was so brave, even in their own thirds, decision making, one touch lay offs. Had it all.

Isn’t Maresca all but announced as taking over at city? He is long odds on anyway and Alonso it even in the top 4 in the betting which tells me he won’t be going near to City.

But even Klopp had to move away from his much loved high intensity high press style as it was just too hard on players and unsustainable from an injuries and burn out perceptive across the season. My understanding is that it’s Slot’s desire to do it in shorter stints intertwined with longer periods of control (I.e mid-game rest/recovery).

Everyone posts about the supposed style Slot wants to play, the tactics he supposedly wants to impose, but where is this info coming from?

Nothing I've seen on the pitch for over a year now indicates any sort of style that's being worked towards.

We started a near full strength 11 against Barnsley and even then didn't showcase anything resembling a style of play.

It's all there if you have the time to go through it.

4-2-3-1, double pivot, energetic attacking quartet. Maybe it just doesn't translate to the Premier League. Maybe he hasn't the players to implement it effectively. We'll know more next season!

One of the first things I read about him was that he loves wingers. Our wingers are either too old, too young or too Gakpo.

I don’t necessarily like the excuse that he doesn’t have the players to play the way he wants to play but perhaps he is too inexperienced to find a solution to that. Klopp might have figured that out in Dortmund and Mainz. Slot has to do it at Liverpool

I haven't seen evidence of that system in two full seasons so I wouldn't just post the link as some sort of QED

If you take the players for at the start season and a 4-2-3-1 you have -

    Team 1:

    Frimpong / Bradley - Konate - VVD - Kerkez / Robertson

    Gravenberch - Szoboszlai

    Salah - Wirtz - Gakpo

    Isak or Ekitike

    Team 2:

    Frimpong / Bradley - Konate - VVD - Kerkez / Robertson

    Gravenberch - Szoboszlai

    Salah - Wirtz - Ekitike

    Isak or Gakpo

    Team 3:

    Frimpong - Konate - VVD - Kerkez

    Gravenberch - McAllister

    Salah - Szoboszlai - Wirtz

    Isak or Ekitike or Gakpo

    Team 4:

    Bradley - Konate - VVD - Kerkez

    Gravenberch - McAllister

    Frimpong - Wirtz - Gakpo

    Isak or Ekitike

I haven't even looked at using the squad of Gomez, Jones, Endo, Chiesa, Rio, Leoni yet from the beginning of the season.

Slot has had the players to implement his 4-2-3-1. We just haven't seen it. He's used multiple formations this season,

4-2-2-2, 3-5-2, 4-3-3, 4-2-4 even 3-2-5 for example when he just throws all the attackers on chasing a point.

He said it himself in an interview that in the PL last season he was an unknown but that around February teams had found out how to play against his tactics. Nothing has really changed since then.

Going in to the press conference after the Palace game and telling the world what we are bad at and how to play against us came across as completely brain dead when we then went on our worst run of results in over 50 years or something!

Maybe this will be like 2004 where Houllier got us CL and could leave with his head held high, I don't know.

But seeing the PSG vs Bayern game last night and watching Bayern score 4 goals there, Chelsea scored 2 goals there, Spurs got 3 goals there, Monaco got 2 goals in the CL and we turn up and don't even get a bloody shot on target! There's no justification to Slot's tactics for that.

I didn't post the link "as some sort of QED".

Did you read the paragraph I wrote after the link?

Apologies I wasn't trying to imply that Alonso was the favorite or anything, I just meant it would be a decent fit for him all things considered. I imagine he would do better than Maresca too if I'm honest.

Said it before, but if you consider Klopp's first couple of seasons, although he went for heavy metal football, he didn't stick it out, and it didn't produce the desired outcomes (even though it did bring excitement and hope), so I think it's fair to say that he also needed a fair amount of time to implement his own successful style. Slot maintaining Klopps style and tactics last season, although obvious in hindsight, was somewhat of a master stroke and he does deserve credit for that. Perhaps he would be a better fit for clubs where style is coming from beyond the dugout, like Real, Atletico, Chelsea even, perhaps he's not good enough either.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,593 ✭✭✭jesuisjuste

He has been able to articulate what he wants to be fair, he just hasn't provided evidence of it happening on the pitch. Maybe he'll get there, maybe he'll be gotten rid of before he has the chance, hard to know.

I will say the players are seemingly unresponsive to it too, so maybe it's just his man management cannot get them to perform, or maybe they just can't get their heads and legs around it, like united with Amorin.

Better players wont mask the appalling coaching, lack of rotation or motivation we have witnessed this season.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,535 ✭✭✭brevity

what about last season when it was the exact opposite?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,228 ✭✭✭riddles

Lingering squad habits, muscle memory eroded by the gradual inclusion of a new system that has proven to be ineffective against the worst teams in the premiere league.

    Good news about Mo.

Looking forward to celebrating his 8 ears years here rather than debates about his performances this season

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,535 ✭✭✭brevity

That doesn’t make any sense to me. There was a better squad of players set up in a system that worked.

this season we have no wingers and a bunch of players trying to get to grips with each other and failing. And the bench is shocking

    fault this season:

    33% slot

    33% players

    33% the board

Slot is obviously not blameless, but, surely the recruitment team is mostly to blame if we ended up with an inferior squad ( which we did) despite the huge spending spree, if any other club did this, we'd all be laughing at them !
