Hi Ruddy not sure if u seen this query

Can you recommend a plan that is equivalent to Laya Access Health I'm single 61 , finding it hard to keep up repayments and loading doesn't help thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 703 ✭✭✭ruddy1987

Thats actually a good value plan for the benefits, if you are looking to reduce costs there isnt a lot out there in terms of keeping some cover in Private hospitals.

    Hi Ruddy,

I am currently with Irish Life Health and my employer pays a percentage of the health insurance cost.

I will be retiring shortly and am looking for a good value plan to replace this which I will be paying for fully myself.

Also, one of my dependants has moved to the UK, is there any good reason to continue paying health insurance for him?

    My current plan:

Member Type Plan Discount Type of Discount Cost

    Policyholder Horizon 2 €207.60 Group Discount €1678.40

    Partner Horizon 2 €207.60 Group Discount €1678.40

    Dependant Day2DayFocus €139.32 Group Discount €1063.80

    Dependant Day2Day Focus €139.32 Group Discount €1063.80

    Thanks!

Firstly once your dependant is not resident in Ireland, they should not be on the plan. You need to be resident 183 days a year to qualify for irish health insurance.

If your looking to stay with Irish Life i would suggest Health Guide 2 https://www.totalhealthcover.ie/health-insurance-quote?preselectedPlan=170H3D1 (€1,746), very similar cover to what you have on Horizon, main flag is €500 increase to Ortho copayment to €3,000.

That is a terrible value plan your kids are on, what ages are they? I would recommend putting cover with with VHI on PMI 45 10.

    Hi Ruddy,

I hoping you can advise and it would be great if you can, our renewal is up next month and it is 4,2k euro for the upcoming year(increase of circa 400 euro from last year). There are three people on the plan, We are 45, 41 and 5 years old(who would go to Speech therapists regularly). Plan is VHI Company Plan Plus 1.3.

    Thanks

for the adults I would be looking at PMI 43 16 or PMI 45 10 (once you don’t use cork or Waterford hospitals)

    https://www.hia.ie/comparison-tool/results/3AARozQ5OaUxMTg5OcKQkAGhMKM2NTAAk80H6gQVwpMwO80BBJUHBAUJBpCRk6VBZHVsdAABw8M=

for your child I would have a look at PMI 43 16 or likely better to spend a little more on pmi 24 10 for the excellent cover for speech therapists if lots of sessions definitely worth it.

Laya are really taking the piss.

Simplicity renewal has gone up to over 3000 euro per person, thats a 50% increase in 2 years.

Time to change I think, any recommendations ?

do you really need full Ortho cover ? That’s the question, are you definitely going to have a procedure in next 3 years ?

Thanks gor your valuable advice Ruddy

You could look at control 300 create if you want to stay with Laya, similar hospital benefits & €400 less p.a.. Have a look at www.medplan.ie (full disclosure i built this site) and you can browse all the plans easily.

If you don't use Cork and Waterford hospitals, is there any reason to choose PMI 43 16 over 45 10. 45 10 has better GP/consultant coverage, and only slightly higher hospital excess and coverage for listed procedures in hi tech hospitals. The main downside seems to be no coverage for "other" procedures at hi tech hospitals, but the shortfall for those on 43 16 is so high, you wouldn't use them for those anyway - or will the hospitals "do a deal" … what are typical non listed procedures/acute stays?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 703 ✭✭✭ruddy1987

yes PMI 45 10’ is a good plan for you so. Usually hospitals will do a deal on those treatments that have 90% cover but it’s not guaranteed. If you have lower likely hood of inpatient claims I’d go with 45 10

Myself and the missus dont but my mum would just to be safe.

Seems like the Simplicity plan has gone the way of the Plan B on VHI many years ago, just ridiculous hikes.

    Is private room needed to?

Simply connect is semi private and has full Ortho.

I really like better select ( https://www.totalhealthcover.ie/health-insurance-quote?preselectedPlan=156H3D1 )as it has great day to day cover and only a €2,000 co payment on Ortho.

    HI Ruddy

Would love your input. Asking for an elderly relative (93) whose insurance falls due on 1st May.

Currently with Laya on Inspire plus having moved from Simplicity last year.

    Laya have suggested Transform Plus.

Any thoughts on this policy or anything with good cover for a semi private room in Dublin hospital..

Dhecwill not be looking for hip or knee replacements snd is in reasonable health eith a medical card and generally accesses public hospital.

Any recommendations would be welcome with Laya or others.

    Regards

transform plus is actually a great alternative, once not based on south of country it’s a good recommendation.

I would say if happy with Laya to stick with transform plus.

    Hi Ruddy,

Been on Irish Life 4D Health 2 for a few years, we're 2 adults in 50s and 2 kids under 10, current quote for renewal is:

    Adults €219.83 per month

    Child €58.58 per month

With group discount and tax relief at source giving annual total of €5747.80 it's becoming unaffordable having increased 93% since 2022 renewal!

Any decent plans with similar coverage but a lot cheaper? Thanks in advance

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 703 ✭✭✭ruddy1987

Yes its really poor value now. I see your quote includes 5% discount which makes the rate of €5,747.80

    Alternative's:

    1. Horizon 2- Same plan with three changes to inpatient cover, €500 increase in co payment for orthopaedics', new €1,000 co payment on certain Cardiac procedures in Hi-Tech & Private Hospitals, New €500 co payment on ophthalmic. Total cost €5,016
    2. Health Guide 2- I would say this is a very strong option and with discount on plan makes significant savings. Main change would be co payments for orthopaedic increases to €3,000 and €500 co payment on ophthalmic. All other cover very similar except you loose personalised packages. Big savings here, premium is only €4,336 with discount on link here (1 month free)
    3. Better Select- Great plan with improvement to out patient cover and similar hospital coverage. €4,971. This includes one personalised package. Only shortfall is on orthopaedics and its low at €2,000 like old plan. Hospital excess is €75 versus €150 on other plans. It also has 75% back on GPs/Consultants

Health Guide 2 is best value similar cover.

Better select best cover for premium overall is you can afford extra to HG2. Horizon is the alternative to 4D 2 but not as good as other two imo.

Anyone on a 4D plan with a renewal you should not renew as they are BAD BAD value now.

if you are willing to change provider these are worth looking at also:

    Level Health
Plan Pro (save €926 per adult p.a.)

    Laya
Inspire Access (save €755 per adult p.a.)
Connect Simplicity (save €584 per adult p.a. BUT note this is changing to 40% shortfall on ortho and a 10% increase on 1st May)

    VHI
    PMI 44 16 (save 500 per adult p.a.)

Co-payments for procedures may be higher in some cases but the reduction in premiums are very large compared with your current plan.

You can browse these and others on www.medplan.ie , chose plan comparison & pick your plan from the list.

Firstly all i can do is to commend you for investing your time and efforts into this task. Its thankless and so unnecessarily complex. My personal view is the regulator should insist in sub 50 plans to make comparing plans easier and more streamlined. The system is confusing and weighted in favour of the insurers as its so difficult for consumers to compare.

I had a quick play around and it looks great, i would say its an excellent starting point that will point people in the direction of plans they should be reviewing. I would say some of the plan recommendations could do with refinement but this is not a simple task. For example I put in plan PMI 43 16 and in the green lower cost and higher cover option it listed Horizon 1. yes its slightly lower cost but in almost every way Horizon 1 is a big drop of in cover so i am not sure if its an outliner or something quirky with that search (or if i am reading the site wrong which is also possible!).

So i would say its great work at pointing people in the right direction but just need to have a look at the plans suggested (many of them excellent but a few outliers)and for people to do a little reviewing armed with lots of knowledge you are giving them.

Hi Ruddy, thanks for the feedback — really appreciate it from someone who knows these plans inside out.

On PMI 43 16 vs Horizon 1 — good catch, I'll look at that one. The scoring makes assumptions on average procedure costs for ortho that won't always hold, and Horizon 1 probably needs a closer look in that comparison.

More broadly, the tool scores on the big-ticket benefits only — it doesn't try to capture the full picture of a plan, and it won't pick up anything not in the benefit PDFs. Some benefits have no value for certain people anyway. The idea is to severely narrow the number of plans someone needs to review at renewal rather than recommend a specific plan — complement the HIA tool rather than replace it, and help people avoid the renewal trap. "Pointing people in the right direction" is exactly what I'd hope for.

I totally agree number of plans should be limited and all those low value lifestyle benefits should be extras on a base plan if you want to add them.

Any other outliers you spot, feel free to drop me a note via the site.

    Hi Ruddy,

Brilliant feedback from looking back at previous replies.

We are a family of 5. two 39 year old adults , 3 kids under 9 years old.

Current plan is the laya inspire plan for the two adults and oldest kid, with the flex 125 explore free for the two youngest kids. Are there any cheaper alternatives out there. We will need Waterford and Cork hospital cover.

Our current renewal price coming up in May is €4124.93

    Many thanks in advance

    Hi Ruddy,

Our plan is due for renewal on the 1st June. We are 2 adults and 2 young adults. I'm currently on Signify and my sons are on Prosper. I have seen you say previously that its a decent plan so I'd be happy to stay on that but my husband will need ortho in the near future so Im just wondering what plan you might recommend we have a look at for him. Thank you for taking the time to help. This thread has been so informative.
