Not much notifying really - it's more lots of us posting and reporting into the void as far as I can see.

The lack of communication overall is kind of unbelievable, in relation to everything, not just the current ongoing problems.

There's a flurry of activity - promises, requests, aims - and then nothing.

And whenever the site goes down, nothing.

'Boards.ie: Mike' was online today and as far as I can see he made no comment on it?

Not officially but I have developed things with my extension?

When Boards launched their drive for subscribers there was a feeling that some things would change with how the site would be managed. We had nearly a day of incredibly slow performance and outages - during the peak business hours when traffic would ordinarily be at it's highest.

There hasn't been (so far as I can see) any comment on this from either @Boards.ie: Mike or @Boards.ie: Odhran . There were a bunch of people updating the known bugs thread too (https://www.boards.ie/discussion/2058199223/just-bugs-missing-functionality-reports-no-griping#latest) but no comment there either - just users posting.

What's the deal? Has anything at all changed since the fundraising drive last year?

Yes, moderation has more or less ceased in many previously well moderated fora.

There has certainly been no improvement to the site.

The bouncing page issue has resolved, so there is that TBF.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,825 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

Hasn't for me. It's not as bad as it was - that's true. But you still get a little bit of bouncing right as you load page until everything has decided where it should be.

Yes and in other fora the moderation has become completely one sided. Moderators are supposed to have moderate and objective views on the topics they moderate. Their personal views should not cloud their judgement.

I made two donations. Didn't want to see Boards go. But it's so disappointing that the non stop trolling from one side is still given such impunity - this is obviously why the site is viewed as so biased. And before some disingenuous halfwit comes along with sO pEoPLe DiSaGrEeInG wItH yOu Is TrOlliNg? It's 2026 - not 2006 - everyone knows full well that trolling means being on a permanent windup, posting dishonestly and provocatively just to antagonise, posting in bad faith, to sneer at people. I thought it was against the rules here, but clearly not for everyone.

My understanding was that the site is on its last legs and needs a financial injection in order to keep going. Obviously, we have advertising but that clearly was insufficient.

I've not seen anything from management either. Are changes being made or will there just be regular requests for donations and subscriptions?

    Which ones?

Yes, Motors and Infrastructure would have been 2 that were very well moderated in the past.

I haven't seen any evidence of modding in Music \ Gigs for very long time.

There's also forums that have moderators who don't pickup reports for Vanilla reasons.
But you don't know which is which because there's no forum sticky or charter note advising you to contact mods from this list rather than using reporting function.

    Few things to address here.
Connectivity issues: yes, there were performance problems last week. These have been looked at through Vanilla, emergency maintenance was carried out on servers flagging loading errors. If issues persist, keep logging them in the bugs thread.

Vanilla migration: still in progress. It's taken longer than we'd have liked but we're looking at making the switchover in the coming weeks. More detail when we have a confirmed timeline.

Moderation: I acknowledge that there are gaps in some forums. It's being worked on amongst the moderation and admin teams who have been constantly working away on that.

General updates — I know there's been a lot of silence from our end. Not ideal. I'll be posting more regularly here going forward. When I have meaningful updates.

Thanks for the continued feedback — it doesn't go unread.

OK, this won't be popular I'm sure, but I feel it needs to be said....

With all respect Mike, the above largely says nothing and feels like it's only been posted to try and quieten things down among the natives again.

Connectivity issues : not an issue just last week but a regular occurrence for months and even years now. The platform or cloudflare or whatever the underlying cause is simply isn't configured right or specced right or there's some sort of compatibility or version conflicts somewhere. Telling users to keep logging the problems isn't a solution, just a band aid. What are Vanilla actually doing to resolve the issue (whatever it is) long term?

Migration : it's been in progress for the best part of the last year now and always a few weeks away with more details coming soon. What is the ACTUAL timetable you've agreed with Vanilla? Is there one? What about the preview/test platform that users have been promised a look at? What's the timeframe there? Again, more soon isn't an answer really.

Moderation : not a new concern but again no real update beyond "we're working on it". Yes mods are volunteers and have lives and all that, but this is possibly one of the biggest issues (whether you agree or not with the concerns) raised by the community for years now. What is the actual plan?

General updates : yep there's been a lot of silence that only seems to be punctuated when the general noise level starts to rise noticeably and then only with vague promises of progress or next steps that so far remain largely unfulfilled. It's not your fault Mike. You can only comment on what you know /are able to say etc and you're not the owner. The responsibility there lies with Odhran.

However, and I don't know your role spec obviously, if community engagement and feedback is part of it, I would suggest maybe establishing even a monthly/fortnightly schedule of meaningful updates that you can reasonably and realistically commit to would solve a lot of the problems in this regard.

Anyway, just my 2c. I'm trying to be fair but I'm also looking at this from the perspective of the users who fundamentally just want to know what's going on with a site they still care about, that without whom it would already be dead and buried, and I'm also conscious (as I said in the other thread) that nearly a year has passed since the "crisis appeal" and yet we're still talking about largely the same things (see my last post over there - the subscription thread - for more).

To be clear, I'm not interested in or trying to start an argument with you (or anyone else reading this for that matter), but if the donation basket is to passed around again in the next weeks/months then real progress needs to be evident to have any chance of success this time.

    Thanks for reading this far.

It appears development on Vanilla is dead: https://open.vanillaforums.com/discussion/39624/an-update-on-vanilla-open-source

Higher Logic appear to be just running the hosted version, which I doubt is being actively updated.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,825 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

I agree with everything said here. It does feel that poor Mike is sent out to take the flak when ultimately it's Odhran who is the person who makes decisions here.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,445 ✭✭✭✭ancapailldorcha

When Odhran posted the request for money and subs, it'd been that account's first activity in almost three years. Since then, nothing substantial from them.

Without wanting to be a cow, the updates for the past 6 months have been nothing but paragraphs of "we'll update really soon, I promise."

6 months is far more than "very soon," and it's not fair to the people who paid to save the site, to continually be fobbed off.

I actually typed up a PM to Mike earlier today to cancel my subscription, but didn't send it in the end. But I feel like I will soon (3rd 6-month payment is due next month some time)

I know, but I suspect the same applies for the 'Hosted' version. Once the original developers go the product slowly dies. Look how long it took to fix the bouncing issue. A professionally run SAAS would have fixed it/rolled back in a few hours/days. Customisations or no customisations...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 978 ✭✭✭PmMeUrDogs

The page bouncing issue isn't even fixed 😂 still happening for plenty of us

Still there alright but not as bad as it was! 0.5 Seconds delay with overlay can mask most of it at present, it use to require at least 3 seconds.

Is it possible to get the exact time a PM has been sent? On the day the message is sent, it shows a timestamp, but after that day, it only shows the date.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 9,594 ✭✭✭corkie

On desktop if you hover over the date it will tell you the exact time it was sent?

@sligeach Would you prefer something like the below instead on both Mobile and Desktop?

    image.png

^ Redacted content in Black above from an old PM of mine!

That is a quick tweak to add to my extension.

Thanks for your help. I only use Boards on my phone. I have passwords automatically saved there. It took me a couple of goes to login on the laptop as I couldn't remember what it was, as it's very different from another one I have, and even that one has variations on it from site to site with capitals, numbers and symbols all different. I got lucky, I could have been there a while.

And in regards to your next post, yes, I don't see why this feature isn't available on mobile as well.
