Also our strength and conditioning has fallen off a cliff. There's no real height in the team but also no muscle. Tuohy not physical enough for midfield. Ruane not the answer there either and realistically was never an intercounty standard midfielder despite the insistence on playing him there. Flynn and Carney are just very average players tbh and probably would have sat on the bench during Horan's first tenure. There are no dogs on the team. I'd take someone with a "bad" reputation over the softness we currently have.

One would have to wonder what Kevin McStay is thinking. I wasn't necessarily a fan but he took a lot of abuse from fans who insisted the squad were better than what he was producing with them. They simply aren't.

Agreed. The keeper and full-back/centre-back comments are a distraction from the real issues which are our unwillingness to fight like hell for the ball around the middle (and almost everywhere else). That's a poor reflection on the management.

Can we play Roscommon again if they lose the final?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 4,434 ✭✭✭MacDanger

Whether they win or lose, I think we can be drawn against them in either the 1st or 2nd (or 3rd) round

This only mentions that repeat provincial final pairings are not allowed:

Format for 2026 All-Ireland SFC and Tailteann Cup

Assuming that remaining games go to form, it'll be like this for the round 1 draw:

    Home teams:

Galway/Roscommon/Kerry/Cork/Derry/Armagh/Louth/Westmeath (both Leinster SFs are evens with Boyles so take your pick here)

    Away teams:

    Donegal/Mayo/Dublin/Monaghan/Meath/Tyrone/Cavan/Kildare

Down would be very unlucky to lose out here; a Kildare win against Westmeath would move Kildare to the Home teams with Down replacing them as an Away team

Not that Mayo will be going anywhere this year but with Donegal and Tyrone removed it's nearly much of a muchness which side is tougher.

There is enough heartache and pain in Rob Hennelly's CV to make an Opera or a 19th century Rusdian novel, bringing him back was the first big mistake. No fullback, no 6 if Loftus is out and he seems only fit for half a game right now. Very poor at midfield. Most worrying of all is the lack of physicality to compete at this level, Sam Calinan got burned for pace in the 1st half by Smith of all things? Ross were brilliant in fairness, hope they have a good summer now.

Would fullback not be improved materially by bringing McBrien back? I cant say the benefit at midfield outweighs it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,429 ✭✭✭Westernview

I was surprised watching the game how Callinan couldn't keep up with Smith. Smith if anything looked a bit laboured, almost carrying an injury at times. I expected more from Callinan after a solid league campaign.

That was fairly depressing yesterday, a major overhaul is required.I think the damage was done in  the first half. I was watching on telly so maybe I was missing something but it looked to me that every break we got in the first half, we turned back or slowed it down, allowing Roscommon to get set outside the two point arc. ROD was the main culprit, it just seemed to be back to the slow build up play we had under McStay and it completely shut down our 2-point risk in the first half.

Aside from that we are looking at a complete overhaul if we want to go anywhere, remains to be seen if Andy has the balls for it.

Hennelly's day is done, the McBrien experiment at midfield is robbing us of too much in the FB back line.

We don't have a CB, Conor Loftus is great going forward but offers nothing defensively.

One of Carney or Flynn will have to replace McBrien. Bob hasn't bulked up they way you would expect him to have.

AOS needs to go, as does Cillian.Thats a lot of changes that need to happen, none of which seem to have been identified or role played during the league

But the plan on a page was not that. It was all about getting these guys back in, but it has backfired on him in a spectacular fashion yesterday. As another poster said that he was on about another 3 years in AOS and also saying these guys will let him know when they are ready to go….its just the wrong thing to say and I think he says too much anyway, fecking Jackie in Kerry would not tell you the time of day!!. He can't tell them to now go and the least they deserve after the years of service is to see out the season. He should use them sparingly and try to give some of the young fringe guys game time. We are not going to win it so let’s get the most out of it, try to fix some issues and improve for next year. In a way, everyone is writing them off now so the pressure is gone as well. It is time Flynn, Conroy, ROD, Carney, Ruane, Callinan, Durcan, Hession etc and all these guys who are established players to start leading properly.

Am I being way too optimistic to just think of the runs through the qualifiers in 16 & 17?

    😫

You would be worried what yesterday did to Kobe and any chance of a change of mind or commitment to the rest of the year. I always felt getting hold of at least the nestor cup would change his mind. We had the optomism and hope of a Connacht final, maybe a little arrogance and then the team not showing up. Usual stuff, real rinse and repeat which he will have seen growing up, the worst of it is the fans expectation and I am sure dealing with the aftermath up the town and stuff.

The biggest issue is there is now a long lead time to the next game so the long standing memory of yesterday will be fresh before any chance of a redemption so any hope of a change of mind is low. Will his new AFL team even start enforcing restrictions, maybe they were sold a pup of he win Connacht then have a rest and be a more all rounded and experienced player.

Ah stop, that's nonsense! Kobe has a contract signed! Even if we won the whole lot this year that wouldn't change that!

After attending the game yesterday I watched the first half back again this evening. Very noticeable how risk adverse we were with the wind. Only 3 long balls into FF line and 2 turnovers from it. Some nice points taken but with the wind behind us we never went for the jugular apart from RODs goal. I think thats a big part of the problem...a lack of ruthlessness and cutting edge. Then when Roscommon got on top in the second half we folded. A tougher more ruthless breed of player is needed. We have too many nice players happy to tap over points and not enough dogs hungry for breaking ball and scores.

Having said all that we would have had a handsome lead at half time if it werent for the kickout errors gifting scores to them. Management are very much under the microscope now. They will have to cut 4 or 5 underperforming players to set down a marker. Otherwise they will lose all credibility.

Optimistic isn't even the word for it 😭 I honestly think there's zero chance of anything like that. If we get a good draw, there's a chance we'll get one win but I can't see us making a QF

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,354 ✭✭✭HBC08

Its ok to be outplayed, outfoxed and outscored from time to time, that happens in sport. But for Roscommon to come to castlebar and outfight Mayo is totally unacceptable.

Ive been following Mayo for 40 years and thats up there with the most humiliating defeats.

However to end on a (possible confident note) that performance yesterday might galvanise this Mayo team to go deeper than we think in the championships

By all accounts, management got some bad manners last night…..digs of letter signing. The next team line out will be interesting to see.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,547 ✭✭✭naughto

Its like they cant be as bad as that again can they.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,354 ✭✭✭HBC08

Can you explain " bad manners" and " digs of the letter signing " whatever the fook any of that means?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,354 ✭✭✭HBC08

Im an optimistic supporter in general but was embarrassed on sunday.

I was so disgusted at the effort the last day,not acceptable. I really hope we see a reaction.

    I think we will.

Ok just because you asked so nicely. Andy got a few dirty digs about the whole C&H saga last night and that he signed the letter for their removal. This was thrown at him that a similar letter should be done for his removal after his handling of the game and would he walk.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,429 ✭✭✭Westernview

Who gave him digs last night? I must have missed that.

Our full forward was also a prominent mover in that mutiny in 2015 and is still somehow an automatic starter.

As I said the next few weeks will define this management. But I don't have great confidence in them doing the right thing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,248 ✭✭✭PressRun

Can't believe there are people who still have a chip on their shoulder over C&H. I'm sure the same people a few weeks ago thought Andy was the only man for the job.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,581 ✭✭✭Audioslaven

No idea who did it or where it happened. I was just told it happened . Some lads can’t control themselves.

I would have the same opinion as you.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,581 ✭✭✭Audioslaven

it is inevitable that this will happen. This was tough on Connelly not sure about Holmes. They got them to a final as well so people will look at the outcome against yesterday. I know it’s time to move on but you know some lads in GAA will bring it to the grave.

I just think Mayo GAA is so political and the stuff you hear makes you wonder if they will ever win it at any grade.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,429 ✭✭✭Westernview

Go back to my comments at the time of his appointment. I was not one of those in favour of Andy UNLESS he was willing to make the hard decisions. What happened in 2015 is as relevant as ever.

In fairness you did and I would also not have been struck on the idea more so because I had not seen anything that merits handing him this managers job. He was a brilliant footballer without question but managment is a different beast. He has lots to ponder on over the next couple of weeks so this could be the making of him. I can see them improving even if he does nothing huge in terms of changes on players /positions. The players will want to improve for their own worth and pride but utimately will get beat by a decent outfit

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,948 ✭✭✭muddle84

They missed out on a final, semi final that went to a replay against Dublin and I'm pretty sure they only lost the replay by a point!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,248 ✭✭✭PressRun

They were well beaten in the replay. Clawed back the first game to get a draw from about 7 points down with a few minutes to go, but were mostly very poor for most of the game.

Dublin hammered Mayo by 10 points in that replay. They also eased up towards the end.

It was the biggest hamering that team took in championship.

    Memory can do funny things.
