Hopefully the release of the €90bn helps them to turn the screw even tighter. I don't think they'll bother with many ground assaults to retake territory - I'd say they'll focus on crippling Russia's ability to move forward (ammo dumps, air defence, tanks, apvs etc), degenerating their oil production/ export facilities, hitting high value targets (aircraft, ships) and making life miserable for their troops anywhere near the frontline. They've probably come to the realisation that perception will be key in any negotiations ("you have no cards" nonsense) and so want Russia to look as weak as possible when it does come to sitting down.

Personally I hope they also target Russian attempts to rebuild the occupied areas. That's a pretty sinister move by Putin - props up the Russian economy (employs Russian construction workers, keeps Russian companies in business) and no doubt systematically attempts to erase Ukrainian culture from the rebuild. You can also be sure the finished products will be for Russians and Russian-sympathisers only.

There was another scathing article from one of the Ukrainians involved and describing how legacy weapons development and production and manufacturing used to work compared to how quickly and ruthlessly Ukrainians now iterate

The section on EUs million shell project is interesting, we got there eventually but not without delays due simply forgetting how to build anything these days having outsourced so much

I suspect this 90bn loan will lead to more innovation and defence tech for not just Ukrainians but EU than trillions NATO throws at while elephant projects that can’t even keep a strait patrolled by fishing boats with engines open

Hopefully the US get the grand sum of jack s**t for all their condescension and moral bankruptcy under TACO.

Can anyone confirm what Merz is alleged to have said in the last day or so, that Ukraine would need to give up territory or suffer territorial losses if it were to join the EU in the future?

Saw it mentioned briefly on France24 but haven't seen any credible source for it online.

If that's a true statement, that's no better than what Trump has been saying.

This is from Reuter's - the Kyiv Independent have the same quote. I think he was speaking more from the perspective of Zelenskiy having to try and sell such a deal in a referendum. He wasn't quite saying Ukraine SHOULD give up territory but rather it that might have to.

"At some point, Ukraine will sign a ceasefire agreement; at some point, hopefully, a peace treaty with Russia. Then it may be that part of Ukraine's territory is no longer Ukrainian," Merz told students at the Carolus-Magnus-Gymnasium in Marsberg, a town in North Rhine-Westphalia, on Monday.

"If President (Volodymyr) Zelenskiy wants to communicate this to his own population and gain a majority for it, and he needs to hold a referendum on it, then he must at the same time tell the people: 'I have opened the way to Europe for you'," Merz added.Kyiv's EU accession progress had been blocked by Hungary's nationalist premier Viktor Orban, but his defeat in elections earlier this month raised hopes it can move to the next step. Ukraine currently ‌has the status of an official EU candidate.Merz cautioned against raising hopes for rapid accession, however, saying Ukraine cannot join the bloc while at war and must first meet strict criteria including those regarding the rule of law and on fighting corruption.

From reuters, 'BERLIN, April 27 (Reuters) - German Chancellor Friedrich Merz suggested on Monday that Ukraine may have to accept that parts of its territory could remain outside Kyiv's control in a future peace deal with Russia, linking such concessions to ‌the country's prospects for joining the European Union."At some point, Ukraine will sign a ceasefire agreement; at some point, hopefully, a peace treaty with Russia. Then it may be that part of Ukraine's territory is no longer Ukrainian," Merz told students at the Carolus-Magnus-Gymnasium in Marsberg, a town in North Rhine-Westphalia, on Monday'.

Seems like the Ukrainians are just having a laugh at this stage. The Russians spent a week getting the Tuapse refinery fire under control and then …

… Ukraine sets it on fire again.

Given the size of that refinery, it's importance to the local economy must be immense. Putting it completely out of action - as well as crippling the local tourist industry with oil-slicked beaches - is going have a considerable negative effect on the city and its hinterland.

If only they had some spare air defence systems idly lying around someone's gaff. Imagine that, walking into your back garden and finding a load of air defence systems! What are the chances?! You'd be like, "jesus, how did this get here?!? I must get onto the authorities because I know that our country's valuable resources and infrastructure are getting pummelled at the moment, they must be frantically searching for this misplaced equipment".

interesting tidbit at very end of article

Russians pay their Afrika Korps (previously known as Wagner whom got ran out of Ukraine) $3,000 a month to rape, murder, loot and pillage in Central Africa

Even the river is burning. Apparently 4 tanks in separate areas were hit but looks to be spreading from some of the videos. There's a ridiculous number of targets in this area.

    Good overview

Looks to be spreading for sure

Science class must be fun in Russia these days. I can only imagine the field trips. That Kyiv independent journalist Ilia I think his name is has a video on his Twitter of this fireball in action. Quite the spectacle.

I certainly didn’t expect a figure head like Charles to roast Trump and support Ukraine. The most political apolitical speech. Props. to Charlie.

And Trump probably didn't even twig. He'll be sitting there "this guy is a king, you know, and he's coming to MY house".

I was getting bored of watching the Tuapse volcano anyway.

Here's an image of the location in relation to the pipeline infrastructure. Russia starting to look very vulnerable. These strikes must be what Ukraine talked about recently when they said they'd new technology to surprise Russia. I think this strike is 1500km deep.

This is becoming an enormous game of whac- a- mole , and the russians are going to have to panic move air-defence to try respond - but the more they do that- the better the Ukrainians know what assets are being moved and likely , and to where - some of the spy satellites can pick up fresh wheel tracks in soil- through cloud - and compare them to previous scans -

So they know where to hit next -

And as tuapse shows just because they've devastated it once - or twice this week doesn't mean they wont do it a third time ..

I'm waiting for the Ukrainians to put small cluster munitions on their drones- and missiles, (apparently theyre working on it with the flamingo)

So less drones can hit more targets , 😉,

Its not like oil refineries, pumping stations and tank farms are exactly hardened targets .. and most factories arent either .. I'm expecting actual firestorms ala Dresden and Tokyo - but with less civilians hopefully..

    Sign of weakness!

Russia's Victory Day parade in Moscow on 9 May will be scaled back this year because of a "terrorist threat" from Ukraine, the Kremlin has said.

    And a mechanic!

    https://www.newsweek.com/germany-overtakes-us-in-ammunition-production-capacity-11886409

Germany has quadrupled artillery production. Much of it I'm sure is for Ukraine but I'm sure they're also stockpiling incase Russia is stupid enough to attack the Baltic's. Germany, Poland, Finland, Norway and Sweden would likely be at the forefront in defending them. Reliable NATO partners i'd call them.

Surely a lack of equipment is a factor and troops.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,799 ✭✭✭bored65

They are lacking equipment, can’t even get together a token WW2 tank or maybe they realised that just look really sad in year 4 of Three Day War

Israel being it's lowlife self again: They have allowed at least two shiploads of stolen Ukrainian grain to be offloaded after being bought by Israeli companies.

Ukraine summoned the Israeli ambassador to protest their actions.

A combination of a lack of equipment, troops and an inability to defend Moscow

It looks like a very public display of weakness.
