Sure there has been noise the last couple of months about UAE signing him.

Would be stupid on his part and I don't think he is stupid.

If you remember UAE weren't strong enough when Pog got there. He won his first tour sitting on the back of the Jumbo train.

There're rumours that Macron has intervened (he has form in this intervening to keep Mbappe at PSG albeit this didn't last long) https://www.domestiquecycling.com/en/news/seixas-transfer-hype-hits-overdrive-amid-report-of-president-macron-intervention/

Decathlon have been throwing money at the team, and probably have the clout to become a major force over the next few years. They certainly leave a less sour taste than all the petrochemical/nasty regime sport washers.

Aside from a huge pay packet, would UAE be a good move? He'd always be 2nd fiddle to Pog until he finally decides he's had enough (does anybody really believe that'll be after the Olympics?)

According to Wikipedia the CMA CGM part of Decathlon CMA CGM is the world's third largest shipping container company.

I know times are not great for shipping but if they have a genuine French TdF contender they surely have the money to back him.

Seixas already turned down a move to a bigger team.

"I realised that staying with a familiar team and environment was better than getting a bigger paycheque elsewhere"

If that's his actual thinking then he seems to be really steady and mature for a very young man.

There's a lot more than talent needed to reach the very top in any sport but in particular something a viciously hard as pro cycling. All types of great talents fall by the way side with "if only" stories.

Long term Decathlon may or may not be the best place for him, the pressure around the Tour will be immense/insane until he wins one, but while he's still actually developing for the next few seasons somewhere he's at home and comfortable would be best.

I don't think the pressure changes moving to a different team to be honest, except he wouldn't get the chance to lead at the Tour initially. Might be missing his best chances as well. Decathlon apparently moving their paying agent out of France, which should free up budget.

Rafferty up with the big boys on the final stage in Tour of the Alps

EDIT: PCS now saying its Cepeda

    RIP.

Colombian Cristian Camilo Munoz has died from a knee infection following a crash six days ago. The 30-year-old did not finish the Tour du Jura one-day race in France in which the accident occurred, and was treated by medics following the incident.

    That is horrific.

I've had a lot of dirty cuts, injuries over the years on bike but usually farm work.

The way medics deal with those issues has changed over the last 10 years or so.

On three occasions I've been prescribed antibiotics on day of injury rather than when infection actually is apparent.

Medics seem terrified of blood/skin/bone infections.

I had assumed it was due to medical negligence claims but clearly not.

My sister who's a nurse has cleaned a few of my wounds over the years takes way more precautions with hygiene than nurses were taking with me 20/30 plus years ago. It's just the way she was trained, it's not special treatment for me.

I still can't believe an injury that didn't need a hospital stay has killed a fit young man.

Maybe pro athletes can have compromised immune systems I don't know

Been a split in LBL already…Remco and about 60 in the front, Pog, half of UAE and the whole Decathlon team behind.

Not sure if its due to a nature break but gap out to 2m30s now…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,287 ✭✭✭✭Dodge

UAE and Decathlon working hard to make up the gap it seems. Dropped 30s in the last 10 minutes according to PCS

Doesn’t look like there’s anyone in the lead group willing to kill themselves (Remco with only one team mate for example)

    Pog still the favourite

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 42,997 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

If they catch up you have to wonder what all.those teams in the lead group were at. If I was running a team I'd order them to work hard to maintain the gap.

You can act the maggot from 10km out if you have a 3 minute gap.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,287 ✭✭✭✭Dodge

there isn’t many (any?) teams with their leader and a good amount of domestiques there. Shame

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 15,836 ✭✭✭✭retalivity

lidl, groupama, ineos, uno x should be all in on keeping the front group ahead

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,287 ✭✭✭✭Dodge

So Remco can win easily? It’s just a shame he couldn’t get anyone with him IMO

theres a monument podium up for grabs is pog/seixas are out of the picture, anyone in for a shout at top 5/10 should work to keep them behind.

    all back now anyway.

Now this is fun, Pog and Seixas obliterating the field

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,122 ✭✭✭EagererBeaver

Remco gone. Incredible from Seixas to hang on here but he's struggling.

Seixas has never looked uncomfortable really.

We'll know soon enough though if he has the speed and strength to stay with Pog.

I hope he stays with him even if he loses a sprint finish. We need another superstar.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,122 ✭✭✭EagererBeaver

He was gritting his teeth and rocking all over the place the last couple of mins on la redoute. Had to work overtime to stay with him.

Doesn't even need to come a close second, never mind win. He's already proved he has it. They have to send him to the Tour.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,122 ✭✭✭EagererBeaver

Same thing there. Pogi was in the saddle looking calm and untroubled and Seixas was rocking and rolling while visibly gasping.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 42,997 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Seixas not there yet but he's two years younger than Pog was when he won his first tour. Three years younger than he was when he won this for the first time.

You'd have to think he's going to be a very serious challenger to the king.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,122 ✭✭✭EagererBeaver

Decent bit of intrigue with Seixas for sure but ultimately all a bit predictable in the end. Good to see Remco fight it out for the podium as well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 917 ✭✭✭Morris Garren

I think I need another new bike. Pog rode up a 12% slope in the saddle at 24kmh, that must be an amazing Colnago he's on. Seixas was swinging and struggling, out of the saddle, all the way up La Redoute long before this, great credit to hang on as long as he did. But these new bikes mean that a 260km monument classic with 4300m climbing can be covered at nearly 45kmh. Astonishing

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 42,997 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

I think you'd need an insane level of fitness before the bike would help tbh.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 917 ✭✭✭Morris Garren

Oh yeah, I forgot the fitness bit. Climbers used to get out of the saddle more often in yonder years, now Pog just spins away, even more effectively than Chris WashingMachine Froome used to do

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,506 ✭✭✭fat bloke

I was shouting at the TV everytime Sexas rode through. Why in the fup didn't he sit on?? Is it awe or respect or willy-waving?

That really is dreadful. I think there was quite a lot of concern for exactly this kind of thing the WvA did his knee in the Vuelta - I think he was in hospital for 2-3 weeks after it. There could be a bit of the compromised immune system in it as you say, or maybe even just bacteria that his body didn't know how to deal with (i.e., common enough in eastern France, not common at all in Colombia).

    At any rate, RIP.
