I presume there’s going to be GAA games in Celtic Park while Derry play in it for the next 4-5 weeks?

Good listen. Scary how unwell he became so quickly after playing a game of golf the day before

I didn't listen to the Gary O'Neill one but seems similar to Stan Petrov. Had a bit of a fever the night before playing Arsenal, took a paracetamol assuming it was a bit of a flu and played the game but was way off it.

By coincidence, it was the same time Fabrice Muamba had collapsed and the Villa doctor had a bad feeling and insisted he get bloods done. Diagnosed with an aggressive form of leukemia then, caught early enough due to this that he had a fighting chance.

Extemely fit elite athlete one day, borderline terminally ill the next.

Any Shels fan who is blaming this car crash exclusively either only on O'Brien or only on the players is a simplistic idiot

I'm not sure on that. I know there is none between now and the Bohs game anyway.

Not sure if there is anything they could do with the pitch? Maybe roll it when the next wet weather comes? I have to admit it won't be a good watch for any game with it's current state.

But come the new Brandywell pitch, it will have all been worth it. Short term pain.....

Was Institute's ground not an option? Didn't you oblige them at one stage?

  • Moderators, Education Moderators, Sports Moderators, Paid Member Posts: 12,672 Mod ✭✭✭✭artanevilla

Institute's ground is gone, I believe they've been playing at The Brandywell for a number of years now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,336 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

Yip, they play at Brandywell too.

Only other option being considered was Sligo ground.

Hearing reports there might be a hurling game tomorrow at Celtic park.

So a twelve month season on the new grass pitch?

Joeys team selection is a lottery. Changes every week. Substitutions are bizarre. Taking off Martin instead of Boyd( on a card ) was baffling. Caffrey should have been substituted 20 minutes before he was. Replacing him with Ganno when we were chasing the game !!
The players need to hoof the ball when we’re under pressure instead of playing it to the edge of the and inviting the pressure back on.
The board have a decision to make after big investment. We need Europe and as it stands the cup is our only chance

Boyd was your best player in the two games against us this season.

When I saw the line-ups, I was delighted that McInroy wasn't playing, he's a smashing player. If he was brought on at ht to protect your lead, you'd have won.

We've now conceded six goals in two games. Our win last night was as much to do with Shels as it was our own performance which was abysmal in the first half.

The worst thing I can say about last nights game is it didn’t even surprise me.

There’s a couple of things for me and it’s not always easy to differentiate between players and manager.

The strategy of passing it back around defence for ages that pads our possession stats is abysmal. It goes nowhere , so slow and just allows teams to regroup. That seems to be coaching.

Our defence looks badly pourous. Anytime there’s a corner or set piece we look in trouble, not sure defensive errros (brain farts or second to react in box) is coaching issue but players heads don’t seem to be right.

The team has been far too consistent at being inconsistent and it’s the “this is our shels team” that’s prob hard for joey to shake. We have way too often either had leads, gotten back into games we were losing and had momentum but the team has just stopped. We’ve lost most of those games , I can’t understand how you get back into a game and you can mentally just switch off, that’s a really shite pattern that seems like some sort of mentality issue.

the question is how much comes from coach. We miss Coyle ripping the head off people. Not sure McInroy is having his best season but him and JHF doesn’t work as a CM partnership without lunney on front of them. They are not gonna win back the ball and I’ve seen us tore open right down middle too much.

Don’t love the 3 at the back, won’t say it’s the reason we are where we are but I could deal with never again seeing our 3cbs and GK playing it around each other.

All in all , it’s not great. I don’t boo my team or demand managerial sackings but I can understand if there’s concern from higher ups. Unless Joey makes drastic changes it’s hard to see how this improves. I’m no tactical genius but I’d like to see 3 at the back scrapped unless we are playing quality opposition and 2 up front.

It’s stating the obvious to say that the players obviously have involvement in what goes on, but Joey O’Brien has responsibility for what happens on that pitch. Thats the job.

    Sligo going well

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,846 ✭✭✭✭Oat23

The recent run of good form coincides with McHale replacing Fitzgerald at the back allowing him to play further forward again and he has 3 goals/2 assists in the 3 wins. We actually pose a threat now finally.

Just get to July with a bit of a gap over 10th and I'll be happy.

    PD

Dundalk's loss in Sligo has left a gap to the top 2. Poor Waterford are cut adrift. Good battle for top 8. Drogheda picking up an important win as well.

    FD

Good wins for UCD, Wexford and Athlone in the playoff push. Bray back in the top 5 after a good draw against Cork. Longford are in the playoff mix. They finished last season strongly. More frustration for Kerry supporters. The off season signings haven't worked out.

Was watching the highlights of Bray v cork. What was the old grass pitch in Bray like? the new one seems like playing football in a car park. I thought the old grass pitch was a decent surface?

I agree Joey is shooting himself in foot and I can't see this mess turning around under him we look broken but we had similar emerging issues 12 months ago under the great Damien Duff - loss of identity, fluctuating formations/systems/lineups that players looked like they hated, important players like Caffrey/Coyle permanently dumped out of position, 'cheap' goals increasingly conceded, questionable recruitment and a declining workrate especially in the defensive aspects of the game which we were so effective at over 2023/24 - all of that is not 100% the fault of two different highly regarded coaches who had been the core of the club's turnaround since 2022

Duff walked out when after the 12 preceding games we were PLD 12 / W 3 / D 4 / L 5 / PTS 13 - we have exactly identical results/points as O'Brien has in this first 12 games of the season. Last summer we got the new manager bounce complimented with some transfer window signings but I can't see that improvement repeating this summer if you got Kilduff/Russell/Long/Perth or whoever in

Not really, he's well in, there was a very heated meeting, someone else called it incorrectky before it calmed down, on the brink though if results don't improve rapidly.

It’s suspicious because we don’t know who you’re talking about.

    PD

    Drogheda v Sligo

    Dundalk v Shels

    Galway v Pat's

    Bohs v Derry

    Shams v Waterford

Playoff avoiding 6 pointer in Drogheda. Dundalk and Bohs under a bit of pressure to avoid the top 2 opening a more substantial gap.

    FD

    Athlone v Kerry

    Bray v Treaty

    Cork v Cobh

    UCD v Longford

    Wexford v Finn Harps

The way the fixtures have worked out this week - the top 5 are taking on the lower 5. Kerry on a terrible run. Really disappointing after the off season signings were supposed to bring the bit of experience required.

Thought Fitzgerald was very good last week. I think Sligo will be grand. Seems to be the same every year, dodgy start on a poor pitch and then as the weather and the pitch improves there is an upturn in form. How is McHale doing for you ? I wonder does he have a long term future at Pats.

Huge weekend for Bohs and Shels. Can't help but feel the two results this weekend will define rest of season.

4 or 6 points for Bohs and we are back in the hunt at the business end. 3 or less and we are set for a miserable mid table nothing season.

4 or 6 points for Shels, they are back nearer the top than bottom. 3 or less and they have serious problems and probably a managerial vacancy.
