The film will be a hit, which - as countless examples in either direction have shown - has absolutely zero bearing on whether or not it is any good.

There won't be another film. I would quite happily bet the farm on that.

So you've picked out one review from a video game publication for criticizing their lack of Jackson knowledge... Here's the Ebert review and they are very much so well regarded critics…

"Says that they tried so hard to make it a messiah story that the content ended up being laugh-out-loud funny."

    That is absolute BS. 💩

"Kermode accuses this movie of actively trying to create a whole new untrue story, and claims that he was wholly uncomfortable all through this show."

Also total BS. Thanks, I can now completely dismiss that pile of $h1t "review".

It’s trending to doing just as well, if not better internationally. Anyway as mentioned before that’s not to say the film is good, but if it does do big bucks, we will probably get the second film

So.... It WONT do well in the US?

I'm confused, you come across as a fan of the movie.

Well tbf, the critics have been wrong about various movies and albums in the past that went on to have a massive cultural impact.

I just think some of the reviews are harsh. I certainly didnt get any messiah theme from it and certainly didnt have that experience.

Suppose I went along expecting the music, the performances and the whole Joe Jackson thing. I enjoyed it. Certainly not the best movie I'll see this year and as I said above, they could and should have explored his developing years and what made him get to the top whilst carrying the physical, mental and racial issues he had.

Maybe I'm just wise enough to know that the weird and controversial issues began or became public after the period covered in the movie and knew what to expect.

As someone else said in this thread, if you're going along expecting it to cover all of his life and his (justified) issues with his family and his controversies, while its produced by his estate and family, in order to flog his music and make money, you're going to be disappointed.

A trilogy isnt enough to cover Michael Jackson. The guy's story is way too big to tell. Suppose he got what he wanted when he said he wanted to be mysterious and for no one to ever really know him or the truth behind him. Didn't work out how he wanted, but he got it

I personally think Thriller was what changed him and killed him. Thriller isnt made, he gets help and lives a normal life. Then again, maybe his family done the damage in his developing years

Michael Jackson is absolutely someone to be inspired and influenced by, artistically.

As a human being, not ever. May have done some great philanthropy work, but it doesnt cancel out the fact that his life and for the majority involved was one big tragedy

Funny enough, I think the opposite. Will do big business around the world. But not so much in America

I don't see this movie having any form of a serious cultural impact. It will make money and that's it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,321 ✭✭✭MOR316

That isnt what I said at all. Of course its not going to be a cultural hit. Please dont be misquoting me

What I said was critics have been wrong in the past. Regularly enough if truth be told. I think its an enjoyable movie but not great and certainly not as terrible as its made out to be. Its grand.

For example, I remember Forest Gump getting absolutely stuffed by critics. I went to see it and thought it was class. I also remember Batman and Robin getting decent reviews (yes, that happened) and as a Batman fan, I was livid I wasted my time going to see it

Are you kidding? If he was alive now he'd be working for the White House.

Just out of it. Complete garbage but I was entrainment. I wasn't expecting much but it's MJ ffs. Still loads more to tell and would definitely see a sequel.

Have you seen the movie? If so, what did you think of it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,166 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

I seen the movie last night. I thought it was very good. I might expand later, but some of the criticisms are pure 🐂 💩. I thought it ended in 1988, but really it ended in 1984. The last performance is in Wembley, which is understandable as it was his next project after he was free from his father. I'll probably go and see it again next week.

To me at least, the unfair critic reviews give a glimpse of what Michael Jackson had to put up with from the media when he was alive. It's not a 10/10 , but likewise it doesn't deserve the low critic scores.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,166 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

Yet another BS statement. Yes, I'm a fan of Michael, but I can see some of ye here for what ye are. It's quite transparent.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,591 ✭✭✭Rocket_GD

So will you just dismiss all negative reviews of it because you're a fan boy?

Kermode is a well respected critic with decades of experience. He's usually on the money with his reviews.

What part of it is complete bull shít?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,321 ✭✭✭MOR316

Its obviously not aimed at me but I am a bit confused as where critics are getting the messiah thing from. I didnt get that at all.

There are three scenes. Two of him performing and people in the crowd fainting and another where he's in NYC and a crowd pack the street to see him...

But those things happened and its more celeb worship or whatever affect he had over his fans than a messiah thing.

I really dont understand where that comes from in the movie

Haven't seen it yet, despite all the reviews going on Tuesday to see it (thank you free Vodafone tickets).

I love Jackson's music, very conflicted about him in general, for obvious reasons. I'll come back to you when I see it.

I haven't read anything about this, was there any mention of the books “Boys will be boys”, “In search of Young beauty” and “The boy, a photographic essay” found in his bedroom safe?

    image.png

    Who were the authors?
Both books were made by two known pedophiles, Martin Swithinbank and Ronald Drew, under the pseudonyms Georges St. Martin and Ronald C. Nelson. Martin Swithinbank was a NAMBLA officer who was jailed for 10 years for sodomizing young children and deported upon release. Co-author Ronald Drew was fired from his teaching position for sexually abusing a student. Self-described pedophiles such as Hajo Ortil, Karel Egermeier, Jos Le Doare, Jacques Simonot, among others, contributed photographs to the book. In short, books made by pedophiles for a similar audience.

In fact, one of the photographers, Hajo Ortil, gave an interview to a website that defends relationships between kids and adults, explaining his sexual relationships with boys and how he collaborated with Swithinbank for both books.

I don't get it either, it's total nonsense.

I already explained earlier, but the above is one of the reasons why Kermode's review is BS. And I'm not "a fan boy".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,591 ✭✭✭Rocket_GD

You haven’t, you read one IGN review and based your opinions of all critics opinions on the movie based on that?

    Sorry fan girl, my bad.

The last concert in this film is in Wembley? Isn't that exactly how Bohemian Rhapsody ended?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,166 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

Yes, the last footage is Wembley 1988. The film begins briefly with him backstage there, with the camera at his back. You can hear the crowd cheering in the background.

Then it begins properly in Gary, Indiana in 1964. But the movie itself ends in 1984 with the last performance of the victory tour with Michael saying on stage this is his last performance with his brothers and walking away from Joe who is annoyed. I don't know if I should be putting any of that in spoiler tags.

Not to me. Tell us... Say it plain and simple. What are we? Say it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,212 ✭✭✭eightieschewbaccy

In fairness you've dismissed all critics who gave a remotely negative review. You picked out a gaming publication as if it was representative of all reviews.

I mentioned in another thread on here about cognitive dissonance, how we all do it and how we shouldn't pull others up on doing it too. So I can totally get why folks still listen to Michael Jackson if they like his music.

What gets me though is how fans deny any of it is true. There were literally photo books written by known pedophiles found by the police in the safe of his bedroom, one with his name written on it. It's all in the evidence. To not acknowledge this is to stick one's head in the sand.

You're definitely a fanboy/fangirl/fanthem, come on now. I simply looked at your thread history and you'd started one before gushing over Michael Jackson, celebrating the anniversary of his death. Linking to a doc made called "Humanitarian" but then calling those who have legitimate points to make about his abuse allegations "haters" and "trolls".

    https://www.boards.ie/discussion/2057991335/10-year-anniversary-of-the-death-of-michael-jackson/p1

You're clearly not coming to this from a neutral standpoint. You either have a bias towards Jackson himself, going-to-bat for accused diddlers, or both!

I will dismiss any and every review that gave it a 1/5, it's just not true, imo.

Most of those reviews I instantly dismiss. The review I quoted was IGN because I know them, they weren't even the worst score. I'm not "all critics who gave a remotely negative review", but a review gives it 1/5, again, just isn't right, again imo. Listing criticisms that aren't fair.
