That only 29 people could even attempt it says something

Important to include though that nearly all the others won consecutive elections (because it's easier for an incumbent President to get re-elected). Whereas Trump ran for a second term and lost. And a big factor in why he ran and won again after that was because the previous President was the one who had to try get the country back on track partially because of the sh*tshow Trump caused pbut also due to the impact of inflation following Covid which all countries were dealing with but which became easy to blame the sitting President for, and then of course the sitting President running for re-election and then dropping out halfway through the campaign.

Trump getting elected for a second term is less of an achievement from him and more just a damning indictment of the American populace and an absolute balls-up by the Dems.

Ah all the pretence of caring over Qatar was hilarious to me. Footballers pretending they would take a stand. Then backing down at even one yellow for a coloured armband for a captain. There is no sincerity to it. Nor consistency. Not to mention the hypocrisy and faux concern from ITV BBC presenters etc.

What gets me is international bodies came down hard on Russia no an official team banned from Olympics etc for the escalation of war in Ukraine. Russia not even allowed to compete in the WC qualifiers etc. Yet nothing happens when Trump goes in on Iran. There is no sincerity to it. Nor consistency.

And pro people wonder why Putin sneers at the hypocrisy of Western democracies!?

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

It wasn't a pretence, it was sincerely felt by a lot of people. I myself don't watch the corporate crap that is modern football and haven't done so since the 00's. Those players would have been under serious pressure to fall in line so I get why they did. I blame FIFA, not them.

I don't see why you're comparing the Ukraine war to the situation in Iran. The US isn't technically at war with Iran whereas Putin is trying to erase a sovereign state. The two are not remotely comparable. Are you pushing a pro-Kremlin narrative?

I don't care what Putin may or may not be sneering at. I just wish he'd get on with the business of blowing his worthless brains out.

Yeah but this one and I am sure the only 1 ever was going to prison if he wasn't elected.

I would say he got there by less than honest means just like his fake assassination attempt he curiously never mentions.

thats a unique way to extend the ceasefire..

I thought they destroyed the IRGC Navy and won the war at least 5 times by now?

Not to defend Trump/Infantino/any other cunt in any way, but it's not new. Argentina were under a brutal military dictatorship at the time of the 1978 WC. Much less coverage of that though, I suppose. So people genuinely mightn't have known.

I feel like Qatar is worse. Russia at least has some well known clubs and a drinking culture. Qatar was just a new level of corrpution.

If Iran are not allowed to particpate, it is almost certain that they would be replaced by another Asian team. Iraq came closest to qualifying and would be favourites to to replace Iran. UAE were runners up and would be the next favourites. There are no actual official procedures however. A couple of billion thrown the way of FIFA or Trump could prove decisive

In 1992, Yugoslavia were prevented from participating in the European Championship due to a war taking place there. UEFA selected Denmark at a late stage to replace them as they were runners up in the group. Many of the Danish players had gone on holidays, on the beer etc. Denmark managed to gather up the players and they went on to win the whole bloody thing

Lying your way into a top job and then making a complete balls up of everything isn't much of an "achievement".

Sounds like Putin's not the only one sneering....

I get where your coming from there but for me they are both disgusting dictatorships that I have nothing but contempt for. But the main point remains corruption and FIFA go hand in hand as does their penchant for handing the hosting of the worlds biggest sporting event the World Cup Finals to disgusting ugly nasty dictatorships with both Qatar and Russia being prime examples and the US while not a full on dictatorship is very much a nasty belligerent authoritarian state that is a menace to the entire world so very much falls in line as the third straight ugly to put it mildly World Cup Finals host. I guess at least this time if your a fan you have some options in Canada which is something.

Oh, I just meant that football has some degree of relevance in Russia. That's all. It's a corrupt sh*thole, no question. Qatar just felt more blatant.

The issue has been raised about the possibility of the Trump regime barring Iran from the World Cup. What has this got to do with Russia, or Qatar or Argentina? Did they try to ban any foreign team from participating?

Iraq have already qualified so couldn't be favourites to replace Iran

Iraq are in the same group as France, Senegal and Norway

Iran are in with Belgium, Egypt and New Zealand

Think the base model cut off for ChatGPT knowledge is end of last year so it wouldn't know about the playoffs unless you prompt it to do a web search for the latest info

Football at the levels you are talking about is corrupt as it gets. If the national bodies (and more importantly that fans) had no issues with attending Russia and Qatar they will have no issues with this one.

Its rather unfortunate as the grassroots volunteers in soccer every where don't deserve the behaviour of those administrators at the highest level. But how does one change it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,312 ✭✭✭✭ancapailldorcha

Honestly? A boycott and activism would do it. I can't see that happening but that's what it would take. It's all about the money and if the fans start walking away in numbers, the jig is up.

I think it's mad that anyone follows modern professional soccer, honestly. It's not even the Henry incident. A few years ago, the top teams in England tried to join the European Super League with clubs from the continent. The backlash killed that but it was business as usual before too long.

The bosses know that they can get away with an awful, awful lot before the bottom line is affected and they behave accordingly.

I agree with all of that.

As with yourself, I don't see any of it changing any time soon unfortunately.

It's a deflection tactic, some lovely whataboutery to not address what Trump is trying to do right now.

It's been reported that Trump thought Sec Navy was slow-timing the work needed to build a new class of destroyers by 2028, said class being named after Trump, and decided that was not good enought for him. Adding in Trumps shoot and kill any Iranian boat order to the Navy today after the firing of the Navy Sec, if that order is implmented, it would end the ceasefire and put U.S Navy ships and anything identifiable as US shipping into the legitimate target class for the RGC. There are a lot of dhows and other boats on the TV images of shipping in the gulf near the straits which could be fit for use as kamikaze boats.
