Will white mountain way down in the sw of the county be enough to cover the whole county of Wexford ?

There’s no coverage in Gorey from the existing service

It reaches about a km or 2 outside the town from the tx near the beehive in Wicklow

Maybe it will but the mux 2 footprint would also cover areas where regional stations Beat (south east) and iRadio (north west) are supposed to have the same audience. Now there's obviously nothing to stop all 3 stations broadcasting on the same mux, they all broadcast on the same internet after all. Speculation about what we might or might not get is fun

The Media Bill became an Act back in 2024.

The section relating to Irish radio stations being issued an Ofcom UK licence commenced late 2024 iirc. I think this may apply to local and small scale DAB muxes, not sure about National or Regional muxes.

When I heard about those fees yesterday I felt it very unfair but the flip side is it might move more of them to DAB given how much cheaper it is to broadcast on. Could also move more of them online is the other risk

    Thanks !

So far I only saw this concerning it .

Republic of Ireland stations, Licensed by Coimisiún na Meán should be able to transmit terrestrially from within the UK on Small Scale DAB Multiplexes subject to the Draft Media bill becoming law sometime in 2025, and subject to Ofcom frameworks. Once approved, this bill will allow Ofcom to be able to license non UK radio services for the first time – specifically, those based in the Republic of Ireland . UlsterMUX will update this page when the Media bill becomes law, at present, and until this bill becomes law, we can only accept expressons of interest from BAI/CnaM licensed stations concerning future carriage

The issue is the DCMS Department dragging their heels in UK. Bill has passed, but DCMS have not issued guidelines to Ofcom

I wonder area ybof the major retailers such as Tesco and PC world still selling DAB radios. If they are i hope they are selling DAB+radios. I remember when RTE ran a DAB trial they were selling them.

With good FM DX this evening here outside Kilcar in Co. Donegal, I took a walk up the hill behind our house with a Reka DAB radio (from Aldi) and a Qodosen DX-286 to try finding the best spot with Galway Bay on 96.8MHz. I did a DAB scan and picked up the FáilteDAB Mux 2 along with the 3 muxes from Northern Ireland.

The following is the sequence of info screens on the station playing the test tone, which I thought I would preserve from the test station:

Northern Ireland DAB signal here for comparison:

On FM I was also picking FM stations from the East such as Nova on 100.3MHz (below) and Dublin's Q102 (slogan during an ad break) on 102.2MHz. I haven't managed to pick up the original FáilteDAB mux to date during any DX event.

Those Qodosen radios are class. I have a TEF6686 tuner (wth the same tuner chip). Very sensitive. Nice receptions!

How much better is the FM performance on the Qodosen DX286 compared to the other radio (Reka DAB) ?

West Cork, 9km west of the town of Dunmanway. It has FM transmitters on 103.3, 104.5, 95.4, 95.8

Yes, West Cork . I wonder how the coverage will be in Co. Cork. They will 3 transmitters then!

Qosoden has a tef6686 IC for tuning chip, very sensitive. the DAB ones usually have a combo tuner IC which doesn't perform great on FM + they usually have a band III whip antenna which is smaller than the necessary for FM, so performance will be weak .

Didn't think Donegal would get a Mux 2 signal or is it just atmospherics due to the good weather?

    Na, just tropo propagation

sorry for duplicate post. Boards or my net seems to b acting up

It could be the atmospheric pressure. I remember when RTE ran a DAB trial In Limerick, Cork and Dublin i was able to pick up the DAB signal from Limerick as I live about 25 kilometers from the city. It was a Summer's day and the pressure was very high over Ireland. A few days later when the weather changed I lost the DAB signal. I had to hold the DAB radio out my bedroom window. Did for one hour to listen to RTE GOLD. My arm nealy fell off. 🤣

Just checked my DAB radio. The tone has changed to a very high pitched tone. Fàilte DAB signal coming from Keeper Hill in North Tipperary.

960 Hz (not "very high pitched")

    oh it is tropospheric ducting

Here near Arklow we always have UK DAB but today coming in is Bayside north wales radio which is a local station I’ve never seen before that covers Colwyn Bay and Llandudno in North Wales, varying between just 1 and 2 bars in signal on the roberts presumably on very low power

when we going to hear actual stations ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 822 ✭✭✭editorsean

On strong stations, the sound quality is much better on the Qodosen DX-286, especially with headphones. On weak stations with the telescopic antenna, the Qodosen is a night vs day difference, especially with stations 0.1MHz apart. With an external FM antenna away from any source of interference, it also picks up weak stations that my Tescun PL-880 cannot tune.

I made a short clip to give an example. The clip starts with me trying trying to pick up Shannonside radio with the Reka, Tescun PL-880 and Qodosen DX-286 on the same external 100cm aerial in a south facing window. I then try to tune a today FM relay on 101.1MHz and Q-Radio (Northern Ireland) on 101.2MHz on both the Tescun and Qodosen.

I look forward to FailteDAB 11B going live on Kiltimagh as I pick up Midwest radio reasonably well without any tropospheric propagation.

Getting reasonably clear FailteDAB on 10D in Currow, Co. Kerry (by the church)

On nearby north facing high ground it’s rock solid.

(Not a lick of Tipp FM on 103.9 around here but slightly noisy reception of Live95 on 95.0)

Travelled to Rosslare from North Cork this morning, strong Mux 2 signal all the way through South Tipp, Waterford into Wexford. Mux 1 also available in Rosslare today, but that's the weather as it isn't normally here. Also some Welsh DAB coming in due to weather, BBC radio on FM is here pretty much always.

During high pressure, you were probably getting it from a distant transmitter such as Kippure, which did get RTE DAB. High pressure would not increase a local but weak signal from just 25km away. It was probably weak where you were as they were using directional panels aimed for maximum signal at Limerick city and you were well off-beam? If it was omni-directional (or near omni-drectional) they would have needed significantly greater transmitter power,

    FáilteDAB

Good strong tone received today on Pembrokeshire coast on Roberts Duologic radio with telescopc aerial.

I know conditions are up as the slightest hint of a lift obliterates reception of RTE etc TV from Mt Leinster — I've never discovered why but once lift conditions return to normal the TV signal will be 100%.
