I find that really surprising. Surely one of the shorter EV rates overnight would work out cheaper?

Do you have massive consumption during the day as well as an EV or something?

WFH 2-4 days a week, plus plenty of peak time cooking use. The analysis I did before the last renewal included having an electric hob, which is now gone so there may be some shift by next time.

Gas water heating so no advantage from night rate for that.

Day Night rate rather than an ev window might work

They won't change plans over the phone you can do it online without being penalised. It really depends on your mileage as to whether an EV plan would work, if you do a big mileage the 3 hour charging window can be annoying as you'll have to plug in every night and you only get 21kw into the car, you'd be better off on a smart D/N plan in that case. I did the BG EV plan for a year when they had realistic pricing, it was a good plan but clock watching to avoid the peak rate was a pain in the hole. The car costs around €30 per month on the fixed 24hr I'm on now, unfortunately that plan has disappeared into the ether never to be seen again.

Some EV plans are shite. The peak is high and even the non-EV night rate is way too high. I like the long "night" rate. Use 6 to 8 am for appliances and like having that option.

I have day/night plan with an EV which suits us perfectly. Near identical usage on both day and night but everyone's usage is different so you need to sit down and figure out what suits you

Time is contagious, everybody's getting old.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I have the hdf file downloaded etc, but obviously it wouldn't have the car charging usage built in already, so will have to figure that out.

A simple way of calculating the car usage would be to look at your average driving over the last year. Then take an average consumption figure of 20kWh/100km and just work out the proportion of your consumption that would be the car. It should be easy enough to do a rough calculation of whether you're better on day/night, EV or 24 hours.

I've an average enough km per year driving (15,000km) and the smart day/night without a peak rate works out cheapest for me at the moment. It's convenient too because it means that I only do one full charge per week and I turn the dishwasher on at 11pm and set the washing machine to run overnight. Without any other real change in our usage it means about 65% of my usage is at €0.14 and 35% is at €0.28.

    Thanks.

What plan is that, I can't seem to see any day/night plans, only Smart ones with peak units. I have an inactivated Smart meter

I would probably need to charge for about 900km a week. Car average range would be about 350 to 400 realistically. Car battery size is 73kWh. So maybe 20/25 hours charging a week?

I'm on the Flogas Fixed Smart Day/Night plan. It's no longer available but there are other Smart Day/Night plans without peak rates.

At 900km per week you would definitely benefit from charging at night rates. You can check realistic consumptiom on EV Database but if you take an average of 20kwh/100km you're going to be using 9,369kwh just on the car.

Just after getting a 9kwh solar system with 10kwh battery.

What's best night charge rate at the moment?

    Also have EV.

OK for anyone else wondering looks like pinergy are the best at the moment.

    • Buying at night between 2am and 5am: ~6c
    • Exporting: ~27c

I got an estimated one last month, it was fairly accurate so I can't complain too much

Since the update I haven't received a bill. Waiting for the end of this month until I complain. It will be 6 months without a bill from them 🫣

Already had €160 credited for another complaint last month in regards to changing to smart meter. They still didn't cop that I am not being billed.

Unless you do your full km per week in a day the EV batteries prefer short charges. What I mean by this is you are better off charging the car every second night instead of one big one a week. EV batteries prefer to stay above 50% soc.

So with the EV rate you can have it set to charge for 3 hours every second night, that would cover the 8 hours that you do in one go. Not as convenient, but overall better for battery and that way the EV rate can be used efficiently.

My battery is recommended to be charged to 100% once per week so one charge per week is optimal for me because usually that's about 30% to 100% in one charge, unless I have a long journey during the week.

I was on an EV rate previously and the day/night works cheaper for my overall use. I know a few people who are in the same position when they check Energypal.

id almost be tempted to get to the end of my contract, leave, and see if I get a bill. I think they've 2 months to issue your final bill before they cannot chase you anymore (it might be 3)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 906 ✭✭✭RCSATELLITES

I will have to look it up and see what the terms are. My contract is up in September so would be nearly a year that I could be hit with if they did notice.

I didn't get one at all in October, it was November and January for me, all of which I got

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 906 ✭✭✭RCSATELLITES

The last bill I have got was around the middle of Oct. But billing depends when you join. Why I am saying Oct is because on the 31st Flogas changed everyone onto a new account number and that's why I think my account has been "lost".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,033 ✭✭✭antfin

Since the change of their internal system it has become a bit of a mess. They rarely take my payments on the day that the bill says that payment will be made. The weirdest is that my account balance will go back to zero and show that payment has been made om a date some time after the payment date on the bill but then they might not actually debit the payment from my bank for another random period that has varied from a few days to 3 weeks after my account balance has gone to zero! Whether or not you get an email notifying that a new bill is available is also a bit hit and miss.

Keep stump on the matter and you might never get a bill again, free electricity for life if you play your cards right 😂😂😂

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,145 ✭✭✭bren2001

It won't be in your Terms and Conditions, its a CRU regulation. See 4.9.5 of the below: "Where a customer has switched supplier or closed their account the final closing bill will be issued not later than six weeks from the effective date of the change of supplier or account close taking place."

I certainly hope you're putting money aside for the bill! I'd personally have the full amount set aside if I needed to settle it.

Where does that say that they can't chase you any more if they don't issue the bill on time?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,145 ✭✭✭bren2001

That'd be a weird clause to put in. They've 6 weeks to issue it, there is an anecdote from somewhere in this thread where they were issued a bill after the 6 weeks. They went to the CRU and the decision was that they were not liable for it.

I could easily be getting muddled with back-billing rules.

If you have better information, share it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 906 ✭✭✭RCSATELLITES

I wasn't aware of all that no one customer service take 1 hours 45 mins to get through 😅. Thanks for the information.

Thanks again for all the info, the back billing in the UK is one year and happened to me when I lived there. 🫣 I must be lucky. Didn't have to pay for a full year because wasn't billed. But I have been trying to find any similar information here. Unfortunately it comes up with the 6 years to claim debts and haven't come across any specifics from the CRU or energy suppliers.

They are meant to bill at the least every two months and the final bill within 6 weeks like you said. I still see them just saying unfortunately it was an administrative error and so on. I definitely will get compensation, but the debt cleared I don't think.

I have been putting money aside, and thought the 6 months without bills is severe enough to complain to them and consequently to the CRU depending the outcome.
