Yep, Wicklow starting to believe they can do this

Meanwhile Westmeath have hammered Meath, so day of shocks is on

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,201 ✭✭✭Patser

Goal and few points, hopefully that's knocked the stuffing out of them

Comerford , why the f**k is he taking quick kick outs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,214 ✭✭✭MFPM

Con, Basquel injured, red card…2 point win...they won, beyond that little to take from that. Louth will be big favourites in the semi..

Did Jackson miss a few frees? Unusual to see him with no score in a game

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 1,526 ✭✭✭Dogsdodogsstuff

he missed at least 5 and very scorable ones. Dublin absolutely blessed , Louth will win semis easily if today’s Dublin team shows up

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,118 ✭✭✭Trampas

Didn’t look a red for me. It was like the ref gave it based on player holding his head but he made a great recovery. Murch was very shakey sitting on the bench and walking back after the game

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,390 ✭✭✭✭gormdubhgorm

I think it was 6 he missed.

Dublin blessed to win first half nevermind winning the match. If I was from Wicklow would be taking Jackson to the Wicklow mountains. Even worse when you consider he nailed 2 pointers v Carlow

Didn't expect that much today but that has to be one of the worst Dublin teams I have seen ,we were all over the place and were fortunate enough to win .The management seems to be a complete mess ,feel we badly needed an experienced head on the sidelineand that’s no offence to Deano and the lads. Lot of the new faces in that slightly surprising line up today are just not good enough ,scraping over the line against a div 4 team is really poor and a top team would most likely hammer us .Big task to beat Louth by the looks of things .

Not only did he miss 6, but two of them were brought out from tap-ins to go for the two points after Dublin once again messed up with three up front.

Very little to take from that. Costello was particularly poor in the second half. Why does he persist in attempting shots from between the two arcs, not far enough out for two points, not near enough to be certain of one?

McEneaney and Kennedy were poor, is Lee Gannon available for one of them? Starting Lahiff over O'Cofaigh-Byrne was the wrong call too. Seeing Con and Basquel go off injured was worrying, particularly as Basquel did well when he came on. Murchan looked very shook. White gave away the penalty at the start, and took a while to get back in it.

Of the rest, thought McGinnis was good, made a few interceptions, Scully was the only cool head when we needed to control the game at the end. Bulger was fine in spots, but little else to take home.

Comerford was poor on the kickouts again.

With Louth motoring well against Wexford, we are up against it.

Comerford isn’t just struggling with kick outs , he’s also rushing them way too much. For last 5 mins of game you’d swear we were chasing a lead, he needed to slow things down and take longer for kick outs. He kept letting Wicklow keep their momentum going, I think it was his second last kick , he went as fast as he could , he could have easily taken 20-30 seconds.

Same with some of our frees where there was moments the team could have slowed it a bit and took a quick one. I get it’s getting harder to find your own team mates the way the game has gone, but sometimes wasting 30 seconds is better than struggling out of defence.

That is all down to coaching and the preparation of the team. Regardless of the skill levels of the players, those are the things that should be a given. Questions need to be asked as to the coaching and philosophy that Ger is trying to follow here.

It seems to me that he is being given a bit too much leeway. No doubt this isn't close to the all-conquering teams that we have become used to, but at no point should Dublin be struggling to beat a Div 4 team. Quite apart from the skill levels, mentality and standards seem to have taken a. massive step backwards

The team selection yesterday was bizarre to say the least it showed to me Ger and whoever is selecting the team with him have no idea what the best team is .Sure options are limited but some ot the lads yesterday were way off the standard required to at compete somewhat against good teams and not struggle to beat a div 4 outfit .Huge mistake in not having an experienced voice beside him and that is down to the county board I think .

The keeper situation was an odd choice to me. I thought O’Sullivan did more than enough in the league. Yet Comerford started? Plus O’Sullivan is a 2 point option.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Completely agree, haven't been impressed with Comerford for a long time. I wonder Cluxton sticking around for so long had an affect on his confidence and thus his performances.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,390 ✭✭✭✭gormdubhgorm

Maybe it did? Comerford looks very panicky at times. Even yesterday. All I think of is the Ballymun connection as to why he played the last day. And Dean Rock swayed Ger Brennan. It was an unchanged side from the programme as well. So obviously thought was put into the 15.

Generally he did , but he was more often then not sat nav accurate. I’m also pretty confident he’d of slowed things down if it made sense like it absolutely did when we were down a man with only 3 mins left and 2 point lead.

Gas how many fans wanted Dessie out for so long.

Now Dublin needs an experienced head.

Dublin beat Louth 5-21 to 15 points three years ago, a lot of those lads still around.

I think you are spot on, similar vibe to the Irish men’s soccer team. The leadership not really there on the pitch. Has to come from the sideline. Someone like Pat Gilroy would be an ideal interim given the Vincent’s connection with Brennan.

But Gilroy is probably too busy with his business these days (it’s why he could only do a year with the hurlers as it was). Even Gilroy looking on with an annoyed head on him, might get the team to fire up a bit.

Of course there is a former Ireland Presidential candidate that could be an interim option. But imagine the fuss that would cause!

It’s all very weird, no fire or energy in the side.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,235 ✭✭✭Tombo2001

But what does that mean 'someone like Pat Gilroy'.

There arent five people out there that would be 'someone like Pat Gilroy'.

Even Pat Gilroy is no longer 'someone like Pat Gilroy' as he is 20 years older than he was when he took them over before. Same with Jim Gavin.

And looking at it from another point of view, Pat Gilroy also wasnt 'someone like Pat Gilroy' in 2008 when he took the job because he hadnt run a county team at that point, never mind winning an all Ireland.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,390 ✭✭✭✭gormdubhgorm

Fair point - no options really. As for Dean Rock I can’t help thinking he would be more effective on the pitch, as a late sub even. Those frees / 2 pointers alone would be worth it.

A fair few important players have gone, including ones who could be sprung from bench, heres the 2023 AI final squad :

Also, rule changes have been a major issue.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,632 ✭✭✭Gael85

Dean legs were gone a long time, even at club level. Peaked around 2019.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,632 ✭✭✭Gael85

Dessie achievements will be appreciated in years to come. 2 AI wasn't good enough for some.

The problem is Ger backroom team is lack of a quality coach.

Gilroy was nothing without Mickey Whelan.

Gilroy had a few hairy moments, hammered by Kerry in 09, rebuilt team then hammered by Meath a year later, lost to Cork in both AI semi in 2010 and a league final in 2011. He overcame obstacles to guide Dublin to All Ireland title. Patience is needed with new management set up.

You’d have to think Con’s time in a Dublin jersey is coming to an end sooner rather than later. He just can’t stay fit and you’d wonder will he keep pushing his body to try rehab all these injuries.

"Well, yeah, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,632 ✭✭✭Gael85

I would say Kilkenny, Con, Costello, Byrne and Howard will be gone after this year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,390 ✭✭✭✭gormdubhgorm

I think that 2011 win was completely against the grain. Kind of smash and grab. Made it all the sweeter that it was against Kerry too. The pressure was lifted after that win. It gave the squad belief.

It was notable in Aughrim how patient the Dublin fans were. I heard shouts of “that’s better” etc. Even for players showing a bit of energy, or a good interchange. The fans haven’t turned on the team at all anyway.
I think there’s the realisation that a Leinster Final win would be a real achievement now. I know it is a different level to a Sam but a Leinster win would give the squad a bit of confidence. Badly needed.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Yeah, felt the same. The fans who go every week know it will likely take time to get back. They also see how the likes of Con is struggling to stay fit and how some others are dragging the last bit out of it.
