I wouldn't give Jimmy Fallon the time of day, Michael wouldn't have either, he was very disrespectful to him when he was alive(possibly even since, I don't watch that Muppet).

Jafaar maybe has little choice though, as he probably has signed agreements to promote the movie, and doesn't get to choose who the interviews are with.

Suspect we're gonna see a lot of headlines like this as release day comes closer. Sounds like they were attempting to have a sympathetic take for Jackson in terms of the abuse allegations but legally couldn't because of a settlement with one of the victims. Somewhat interviews to see how this actually does in cinemas, huge money behind it but it's inherently a bit uncomfortable.

"Jackson’s estate has been consulted on production decisions, and its representatives, as well as Jackson’s son Prince (who served as executive producer), were a daily presence on set. The artist’s other two children — Bigi and Paris — haven’t been involved. Jackson’s attorney John Branca and estate archivist Karen Langford handled many of the discussions with the studio."

One of the reasons why so many music biopics are creative dead ends is this regrettable obligation (legal or otherwise) to be 'official'. It's an immediate red flag about a film's basic integrity IMO, even when the subject is less obviously controversial than Michael Jackson. 'Having representatives of a person's estate a daily presence on set' isn't what youwant to hear about any film.

For a movie that's due to come out this week, the headlines are set to mire it in controversy. Sort of interested to see how it actually does.

The film will make plenty of money, no doubt about it, but I’d be amazed if it’s actually any good.

Reviews are largely scathing. Sounds exactly like what I’d expect from a big budget music biopic shadow directed by the late celebrity’s estate.

I know you thought that it might have done well in the box office but I'm less certain given the scathing reviews. Unless audience reaction is substantially better, I could see this really struggling.

Not sure I've seen a worse set of across the board reviews for a major movie.

I’d be pretty confident it’ll still get a big opening weekend based on name recognition alone - there’ll be MJ fans rushing to this regardless of quality. If it really is as bad as the reviews suggest it mightn’t have legs though.

Yep I'd agree, I don't think we're likely to see that series of movies that they seemed to be vying for.

A good day for 1996’s largely forgotten John Travolta vehicle ‘Michael’, as it is no longer the worst reviewed Hollywood film called ‘Michael’.

I’m shocked the ‘influencers’ who had early screenings hyping it up to be Oscar worthy were talking nonsense

It's predictable that every media outlet, and those who write film reviews will go out of their way to run this movie down. This is expected, as every review is talking about why they didn't go into the darker side of michaels life, if they knew anything they'd know they did, and it all had to be cut out to prevent the dirty little liars feels getting hurt. They wanted it in movie, liars wanted it out.

Of course facts will show that this will most probably go down in history books as biggest opening weekend biopic in film history.

Also, this movie(sequel possibly on the way) ends in 1988. The first bogus abuse claim wasn't made until 1993.

This is a BIOPIC, it's about Michael Jackson. The money hungry, lying opportunists don't deserve any mention(even though legalities prevented the movies producers from including the allegations and meant they had to spend an extra $15 million reshooting). Unless maybe to say that they, along with the biased tabloid media are responsible for putting him in an early grave.

The big critique seems to be it's not following any form of a plot and is more of a big replay of music videos. The reason they omitted an abuse related subplot in this was because of an existing settlement with a victim btw.

Whatever about its opening weekend which was guaranteed by his fanbase. The reality is this is already a critical disaster. That's not because of some evil plot by critics, they simply didn't find it to very good. Also those criticisms appear to be similar to the ones from his own daughter.

Reading some of the reviews and it reads like it's simply absent of any plot. Family members described as "glorified extras". No wonder the likes of Janet Jackson and Paris had no desire to have anything to do with it. Suspect there will be a review bombing of audience scores on rotten tomatoes for the next few days.

The only Money Hungry opportunists are the ones making this movie.

And why is everyone calling him "Michael" one name, as if they were friends with him. I'm old enough to remember him at his peak popularity and it was always "Jackson", "Michael Jackson" (Or variations of Whacko Jackson). I don't remember him being referred to to a great degree by his first name only.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,954 ✭✭✭McLoughlin

Well Wacko Jacko was/still is a racist term. One of those acceptable in 80s not in the present day so you won't hear that anymore

I guess Michael is a modern way to rebrand the Michael Jackson brand in the 21st century?

Why? Have you seen the movie? I wouldn't trust the media, and some posters should feel embarrassed.

    Racist how ?

Pretty sure they are known to jus to big up everything. Probably the only way they can get access.

I'm beginning to think you DO work for the studio, as one poster asked. You seem very defensive of a movie you yet haven't seen either.

I think if you look at the consensus and read the actual reviews, it's unlikely that this is going to be a classic!

I was 100% going to go see this, knowing they were going to exclude the early 90s charges and legal troubles, but some of the clips looked pretty cheap. Plus it was obvious that the singing was Michael's original voice, which is a bit of a cop out. The clips had me a bit scared that it would turn out to be a bit cheap looking, low on plot and pretty much just a money-grab using Jackson's music.

Having gone and read the reviews, it sounds as if my fears have been realised. There's no reason for the reviewers to have lied about how they've described the movie, pretty much exactly how I thought it looked from the clips.

At this point, i'm not going to bother and I might watch it on streaming at some point in the future but I certainly won't be paying to watch it based upon everything i'm reading.
