Brilliant result for Munster this evening, under the kosh before kick off the way other results went but you couldn't the effort tonight.

That's a good win, not an easy place to go and they got the job done.

Pack fronted up, scrum was a bit wobbly to start (MA mainly from what I could see).

Ahern caused mayhem in their lineout,

Coombes was absolutely immense. Top carrier, most metres made out of the pack, top offloader with 2, joint most tackles, got a turnover on the deck and took a lineout...and got his customary try. Great all round performance.

Halfbacks were great - thought both yellows were harsh. Casey picked out some lovely passes, especially for Beirne's try.

Nanks was the pick of the other backs I thought, both centres outperformed two very decent opposite numbers. Both wingers worked their socks off and carried well. Great to see Smith back, he was all action.

Edogbo was huge off the bench, first thing he did was rob the ball on the deck. Made second most metres in the pack behind Coombes, every time he carries he made hay. Our defensive maul looked stronger with him too.

Brian Gleeson looks the business too. All the bench put in a shift when you look at the tackling stats. Delighted to see Jager back especially.

When the effort levels are that high we look very good, it's the consistency that has let us down. All that said, we've peaked before at the business end of the season, some injured players are making a return and our bench looks stronger for it... so let's see how it all pans out.

Big match next week against Ulster.

we need to be winning the next 3 games. Ulster and Connacht are flying. big test of whether we are peaking at the right time.

Who got the turnover just before Gleeson's try, Gleeson himself or Coombes

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73 ✭✭bigmac86

As an ulster fan I'm worried our flying is turning into a smokey tailspin after last night's game, potentially lost 3 of our starting 4 props and performance was far off the standard needed from a near full strength team at the business end of the season. Worrying ahead of a tough game next week where we'll have to rotate with the Exeter game the following weekend

True but you have an extra day and we have have a travel day too unless Munster did a charter home tonight

Gleeson. Great impact off the bench again from him

Gleeson got the turnover then finished the try….

Thanks, originally I thought it was Coombes but then I thought it was Gleeson after I saw he scored the try.

I thought Coombes, Hodnett and Ahern had great games, our centres outperformed Benetton's and our half backs had some brilliant touches right throughout the game

Their YCs seemed harsh but we managed the game very well in their absence

Really positive performance and badly needed given the last few weeks distractions and previous performances.

Team played well as a whole. Smith looked good on the wing, better than other options have been. Id be happy to keep him and let TA / DK.

Will we have to limit Crowley / Casey / Beirne playing time over the run in? Or is there some dispensation?

Highlights here. It is a pity Craigs yellow card isn't shown. I think Jacks yellow was legit enough.

The only one that might need game time management is Beirne, Casey has played very little international rugby and Jack only started the Triple Crown games in the 6Ns. Added to that we have natural breaks as we're out of Europe.

anyone else completely perplexed about the penalty that was awarded against hodnett?

I've no huge issue with us getting 2 YCs but I'd argue there was easier cards to give. Ben was a joke, he wanted to award a PT for Casey's attempt despite there been cover there. i do think Casey regathered the ball before it touches the ground but his affort was high risk after warnings. Ben let Benetton away with offside and after offside while we were in their red zone but was issuing us with warnings immediately after Benetton get into our red zone.

We had a scrum under our posts, Ben kneels down, holds Ala'alatoa by the arm and shouts at Casey to use it, we collapse the scrum and he roars, use it, that's a penalty all day long.

Kendellens try was a work of art by Crowley.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 27,576 ✭✭✭✭phog

Yes, while we had a penalty advantage it was a difficult kick to execute, great awareness to see the space and to lad the ball exactly where Kendellan needed it.

huge win, no matter how good or bad benetton were, you have to beat the team in front of you. Ulster on Saturday will be tough. Kind of summed up the season when they said that was Nash's first try all season and Farrels first since v Leinster. The league is so tight so nobody can take their foot off of the pedal. A top 4 isnt out of the question if we can win our last 3, big ask but the turnaround has to start somewhere and a home QFinal would help the finances so that has to be the aim.

we have to avoid an away quarter, especially in SA.

not sure this team can pull of a 2023.

Nash was injured for a lot of the season and he also scored a try v Toulon. Excluding a Pen Try we have had 29 different try scorers this season with a decent spread across the team. The manner of our losses v Ulster, Glasgow and Sharks and losing at home to Stormers were the hard pills to swallow but the rest of our league results weren't too bad even if we weren't taring up trees.

Have never in my life seen a call like it. Made no sense. Penalised for going low in a tackle. It compounded the ridiculous not straight call in the lineout by Piardi a few minutes earlier on their 22.

    can anyone upload it?

I still have the recording on my Sky box. Will see if I can get it off there later (currently in work). Can only find highlights online.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,880 ✭✭✭leakyboots

He said he had a knee on the ground... so I guess he was making a tackle from the floor?

From memory Hodnett *may* have had one knee momentarily on the ground before impact. Definitely not two but I'd have to see it again.

Thought it was harsh myself. Ref didn't have a good night overall, seemed very eager to penalise

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 5,681 ✭✭✭budhabob

Ref indicated that Hodnett slid into the tackle on his knees, this was not the case, he changes direction falling to his knees as a result.

Presume this is a holding contract moving to a central contract post world cup?
